Buy Advance Beach Party Tickets Before Noon on Friday

The Decatur Beach Party will be held Friday, June 18th from 5 pm until midnight. Advance tickets are just $6.50, but you have to buy them by noon tomorrow. Tickets will be available at the gate for $10. Children 12 and under are free – limit two per each adult with a ticket. The Reputations will play at the Bandstand Stage beginning at 5 pm, and Terry Lee & the GTs will play from 8 pm until midnight.

No outside food or beverages will be allowed in the festival area. We have a great food court and many beverage choices for your enjoyment.

Beach Party: 25 Years of Fun in the Sun!

The annual Decatur Beach Party is coming up soon- June 18th from 5 pm until  midnight. This year there will be three bands! Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band will play in the Children’s Boardwalk Area beginning at 5pm. The Reputations will play on the Bandstand from 5 pm until 7:30 pm and Terry Lee & The GTs will play on the Plaza Main Stage from 8pm until midnight. The Children’s Boardwalk area features some new games and activities that will be fun for all ages.

The Beach Party is produced by the Decatur Business Association and the City of Decatur. Sponsors for the event are Eagle Rock Distributors and Kona Beer, HLM Financial, FUZE beverages, Standard Parking, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, Junior Pippin Trucking Company, Holiday Inn Decatur, Brick Store Pub, Amusement Masters, Leapin’ Lizards, Nanston Dental, Dixie Homecrafters, DeKalb Medical,Vulcan Materials, Claearwire and Cultural Care Au Pair.

Tickets are $6.50 in advance and $10 at the gate. Pre-sell tickets will be available until noon on Friday, June 18 here. Children under 12 are free, limit 2 per paying adult. No coolers, picnic baskets, glassware or pets will be allowed in the festival area. The event is held rain or shine, but it won’t rain!

We suggest taking MARTA to the event as it is held directly over the Decatur Rapid Rail Station. If driving,  free parking is available in the DeKalb County Parking deck after 5 pm. The deck is located at the corner of Commerce and Trinity Place.

This Weekend in Decatur….

There is no excuse to stay home this weekend with so many choices of things to do. The weather will be beautiful so get out and enjoy your hometown!

The Lakeside High School Jazz Band will be performing on the Bandstand on the Old Courthouse Square tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the free show.

The Decatur Market and Gallery will hold an Opening Reception on Saturday from 5 until 10 pm featuring Mohamed ElGanoby who does encaustic paintings on wood.  These organic works have depth, texture and vibrant color. The gallery will be serving Egyption food and the outside artists’ market will be open as well. The reception is free to the community.

The Seen Gallery on Church Street is proud to host a showing  of modern Australian landscape painting from the perspectives of two non-aboriginal natives who have been shaped by the land where they live, and approach their techniques from two completely different perspectives. The opening reception will be held on Saturday night from 7 until 10 pm. Be sure to stop by to meet the artists as well as view the other artwork in the gallery.

Little Shop of Stories is having a Pete the Cat Party on Saturday evening from 7 pm until “the cats come home”! They are celebrating the end of their weeklong celebration of books with a storytime and music by New York Times’ bestselling author Eric Litwin and New York Times’ bestselling illustrator James Dean.  Meeooooooooooooow!  (White shoes optional, since it’s not Memorial Day yet.) 

On Saturday the  Oakhurst Community Garden invites you to join hundreds of fellow garden lovers and martini drinkers from 5:30 – 8:30 pm for the 5th Annual Martinis in the Garden. During this outdoor party you’ll stroll and dance among martini bars, fresh food stations and silent auction tables set amid the blooming garden plots, the greenhouse, the earthen playhouse, the “carnivorous” bog and Team Chicken’s famous coop. Tickets are $50 at the door.

On Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, join the Decatur Civic Chorus as they present their 62nd annual Spring Concert at the First Baptist Church of Decatur. The concert is a “Centennial Celebration of Johnny Mercer and a Salute to our Armed Forces”. The concert is free to the community and part of the annual Decatur Arts Festival May events.

And last, but certainly not least, the Decatur Business Association invites you to hear The Bitteroots at the Concert on the Square on Saturday evening from 7 until 9:30 pm. The concert is free to the community, so bring your picnic or stop by one of our many fine restaurants before or after the concert and make a full evening of it.

Decatur Arts Festival Poster Features Pete the Cat

The 22nd Annual Decatur Arts Festival unveiled this year’s festival poster at a wonderful and fun Poster Unveiling last Thursday at the Old Courthouse on the Square. The poster was designed by James Dean and features the ubiquitous Pete the Cat. Many “oooohs” and “aaahs” were heard as the drape was lifted. Posters and t-shirts featuring the design will be available at the Information Tents at the festival.

The Decatur Arts Festival will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, May 29 and 30, on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur. The festival will kick off with the ArtWalk on Friday, May 28th at dozens of businesses in Decatur. Events will also be held throughout the month including  the Fine Arts Exhibition Opening Reception on May25th at Agnes Scott College, a performance by the Decatur Civic Chorus on May 16 and Literary Arts events throughout the week of May 25th.

This Weekend in Decatur

Looking for things to do this weekend? Visit Decatur for the beginning of “Festival Season”.

Saturday is the first of the May Concerts on the Square as well as the 4th annual Green Fest. The music begins at 3 pm and ends with The Holland Dutch opening up the concert series. To keep up to date on the Concerts, become a fan on Facebook.

Another fun event on Saturday is the Urban Coup Tour from noon until 5 pm. You can visit coups all over Atlanta, including the Oakhurst Community Garden. For information and tickets, visit www.oakhurstgarden.org.

On Sunday, join Jean Woodall at the Bandstand for Laughter Yoga from 1 until 4 pm.

Decatur Green Fest Kicks Off the Concerts on the Square

Plan on attending the annual Decatur Green Fest, to be held this Saturday, May 1st from 3 until 9:30 pm. The event helps to kick off the Concert on the Square series and celebrates “being green” with sustainable product vendors, artists working in recycled materials, organic foods, children’s activities and a full schedule of musical entertainment. Night Driving in Small Towns kicks off the event at 3 pm, followed by Decatur’s own Mike Killeen at 4 pm, Sydney Eloise Ward plays at 5 pm, Jeff Hix and the Heretics begin playing at 6 pm, and the Concert on the Square from 7 until 9:30 pm features The Holland Dutch.

Atlanta Light Bulbs, Inc. and the City of Decatur have partnered to bring a light bulb exchange to the event. Attendees will receive 1 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb in exchange for signing an agreement to discard 1 regular, incandescent bulb when they get home. However, if attendees bring an incandescent bulb to the event, they can receive 2 CFL bulbs!

Happy Earth Day Decatur!

Today is the official Earth Day which was first established in 1970. The City of Decatur celebrated Earth Day this past Saturday at the Oakhurst Community Garden and hundreds of families came out for the day. The event began with an “earth friendly” parade- no gas powered vehicles were allowed. The City brought out two of it’s electric vehicles, the ubiquitous mini-fire engine and the new PALS electric van.

Once the parade reached the Community Garden, there was a plethora of activities as well as music and some of Decatur’s environmental groups. Children participated in crafts such as face painting, making necklaces out of wood and more. There were even opportunities to get close to birds of prey such as this beautiful owl:

If you have not yet completed your spring planting, be sure to stop by the garden and get some of their wonderful plants. I couldn’t leave the event without bringing some home for my yard. You may want to make that one of your Earth Day activities!

Hope everyone enjoys today and thinks of at least one way that you can become more eco-friendly in your daily activities. It might mean you walk or bike to school or work, give up plastic water bottles, take your lunch to school or work in reusable containers, or bring your own tote bags when grocery shopping. Concerts on the Square and Blue Sky Concerts Announce Bands

The Bitteroots Play on May 15

May in Decatur brings the return of the Decatur Business Association’s Concerts on the Square and Blue Sky Concerts. Concerts on the Square, sponsored by Wachovia/Wells Fargo, are presented every Saturday night in May beginning at 7 pm and feature an eclectic mix of music. This year, the first Concert will be held May 1 in conjunction with Decatur Green Fest.  The Holland Dutch will be the featured band and play from 7 until 9:30 pm. Bonaventure Quartet will play on May 8; The Bitteroots will play May 15; Tom Hill and the Midnight Suns will play on May 22 and Laura Monk and High Cotton will play May 29, in conjunction with the Decatur Arts Festival. Bring your picnic dinner or visit one of our many restaurants for either take out, or dining in, before the concert.

Blue Sky Concerts are held every Wednesday in May from noon until 1 pm at the Bandstand on the Square and sponsored by SunTrust.  The Jane & Scott Show starts off the Spring series on May 5, Decaturite John Zedd plays on May 12, Mike Killeen plays May 19 and the series culminates with children’s favorite Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band. Bring your lunch or pick up a sandwich from one of our many restaurants.

"Band of Desperate Men" to play at Decatur Library

The Band of Desperate Men will be appearing at the Decatur Library on Thursday, February 11.  The band is comprised of Clay Spurz (aka Larry Schulz), Chamblee Tucker (aka Britt Dean), and Dr. Downbeat (aka Doug Oster). Spurz and Tucker were in the original BoDM back in the late 1970s, and Downbeat was added about 4 years ago when Spurz and Tucker resurrected the group. They play mostly original material and a few covers that showcase the trio’s rich vocal harmonies and accompany themselves on guitar, bass, mandolin, drums, and cowbell. Their song styles are from many genres across the spectrum of American roots music, including blues, rock ‘n’ roll, folk, pop, reggae, country, and Chinese Doo-Wop. Doors open at 6:30pm and the preformance begins at 7 pm. Enter through the doors on the lower level. The event is free. For more information about events at the library, click here.
