Search Firm Seeks Community Input For Recruitment Of New Decatur City Manager

Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss announced her retirement from the City of Decatur effective December 31, 2018 after 25 years of service as City Manager. The Decatur City Commission hired GovHR to lead the executive search for the City Manager’s position. As part of the process the search firm is seeking community input on the qualities, skills, and traits that are important for a new city manager.

The community is invited to a drop-in Community Open House on Wednesday, August 22 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in Decatur City Hall (509 N. McDonough St.), to meet with Heidi Vorhees, Executive Recruiter from GovHR, in order to provide input on the experience, background and necessary skills, qualities and traits that are critical in a new manager. Information collected will be used by GovHR to develop a recruitment brochure.

*Please note that Open Office Hour with Commissioner Brian Smith has been cancelled due to a conflict with this meeting.

FY18-19 Budget Happenings

Are you interested in learning more about the City’s FY18-19 budget and 2018 millage rates? There are a few ways for you to get involved between now and adoption day on June 18, 2018.

  1. Take some time to read through the budget document. It’s available online at www.decaturga.com/budget. Or if you prefer to look at a hard copy, head over to the Decatur Library reference desk (215 Sycamore Street) or stop by the City Clerk’s Office (509 N. McDonough Street) to check one out.
  2. Attend a public hearing and let the City Commission know your thoughts on the budget and the 2018 millage rates. We have two more public hearings scheduled this upcoming Monday, June 18th –  3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in the City Commission Meeting Room at Decatur City Hall (509 N. McDonough Street.)
  3. Let us know your thoughts via the Open City Hall forum. If attending a meeting at City Hall just doesn’t work for you, you can still let the City Commission know your thoughts by sharing them here.
  4. Watch the archived video of the City Commission work session focused on the FY17-18 revised budget and the FY18-19 proposed budget. An archived video of the session is now available on the City’s website.

City Commission Elects Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem

The Decatur City Commission elected Patti Garrett to serve as Mayor for 2018. Garrett was elected to the City Commission in 2009 and has served as Mayor since 2016. She served as Mayor pro tem in 2015.

Garrett is a graduate of Leadership DeKalb, a member of the 2010 class of the Regional Leadership Institute and serves on the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA).

The City Commission elected Commissioner Tony Powers to serve as Mayor pro tem. Powers was elected to the City Commission in 2015. He is a native of Decatur, grew up in the Oakhurst community and is a graduate of Decatur High School. He earned a degree in marketing from the University of Georgia and is a co-owner of Intown Ace Hardware.

Before being elected to the City Commission Powers joined the Planning Commission in 2009, ultimately serving as chair and was a founding member of the Decatur Education Foundation, serving as its chair from 2010-2012. He received a Decatur Hometown Hero award in 2002.

Mayor pro tem Powers is the third African American to serve on the City Commission following in the footsteps of Elizabeth Wilson and Kecia Cunningham. He is the first African-American male to serve as Mayor pro tem.

commissioner-kelly-walsh-tnNewly elected Commissioner Kelly Walsh was sworn in at the meeting by her cousin Polly Jesson. Jesson lives in Boulder, CO where she practices environmental law. The two grew up together in Wyoming.

Commissioner Walsh has lived in Decatur since 2005 and works as a residential realtor for Keller Williams at the downtown Decatur office. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Master of Business Administration from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona.

Walsh has served on several local boards and committees including the Decatur Active Living Advisory Board, Clairemont Elementary PTA, and the Decatur Education Foundation PTA Council. She is a member of the Decatur Business Association and is in the 2018 Leadership DeKalb class.

Walsh joins Mayor Patti Garrett, Mayor pro tem Tony Powers, Commissioners Scott Drake and Brian Smith. City Commission meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the City Commission Meeting Room, Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street.

The Decatur City Commission elects one of its own to serve as Mayor and Mayor pro tem annually at the first City Commission meeting of the year. Both the swearing in and the election as well as all City Commission meetings may be viewed on streaming video on the City of Decatur’s website at decaturga.com.

Decatur’s Transportation Plan Update Public Input Meeting

Where: Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St.

You are invited to attend the first public workshop to help kick off preparation of Decatur’s Community Transportation Plan (CTP) Update. Beginning in October, the city will conduct public workshops to identify various mobility needs and to take a deep look at the state of mobility in Decatur. We want to hear from those who work, live, and recreate in the community.

All participants are encouraged to bring their ambitious goals to the kick-off and other input opportunities. Input opportunities are designed to be easy, informative and fun for everyone to discuss the future of all modes of transportation, identify current and future needs, make short- and long-term recommendations, and develop a vision for new mobility options and improvements throughout the city.

Public input is a large part of the Decatur’s CTP Update. Through this plan, we want to address the equity, sustainability, and active living community goals in Decatur’s 2010 Strategic Plan, as well as build off the framework of Decatur’s 2007 CTP: Decatur Gets Around. Decatur has hired the professional consultant team of jB+a, a division of Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc., and Toole Design Group to assist in the plan update.

Audio Now Available of Homestead Exemption Information Session

Audio is now available on the City of Decatur website of the Lifelong Community Advisory Board’s information session on the Homestead Exemptions that will be on the November 8 ballot. City Manager Peggy Merriss, City Schools of Decatur Superintendent Dr. David Dude, and City Schools of Decatur Board Chair Annie Caiola were on the panel. The talk was moderated by Lifelong Community Advisory Board member Maria Pinkelton. Special thanks to Lifelong Community Advisory Board member Elizabeth Burbridge for recording the talk.

We apologize that the audio is a little grainy at the beginning but it gets better. Please be certain to listen for at least the first 15 minutes and you will get a good summary.
