UPDATED: Tuesday weather update

With more winter weather headed Decatur’s way, city officials continue to monitor the situation. As of this posting, tomorrow’s Municipal Court hearings will be held. and all after school programs will be open. Children and Youth Services is working closely with City Schools of Decatur and an update will be posted here on the Decatur Minute should anything change.

UPDATE:  City Schools of Decatur are now closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 11, so all after school programs are cancelled.

Trash & recycling pick up is expected to occur tomorrow as regularly scheduled.

Tomorrow morning’s Red Hatters Valentine’s event at the Decatur Recreation Center is cancelled, as are Tuesday’s evening programs. All Wednesday Recreation Center activities are cancelled.

There is the potential for power outages over the next few days, especially if precipitation freezes Tuesday night. If you have emergency equipment or electronics that need to be charged, please charge them now so you are prepared in case the power does go out.

Please remember to check on your neighbors, and call the police non-emergency line if you or they require assistance: 404-373-6551.

One final reminder: If you have ice melt/de-icer, please go ahead and pre-treat sidewalks in front of your home or business and help keep them clear as the weather worsens. It is possible that by Wednesday morning Decatur could have half an inch or so of snow. Please continue to check The Decatur Minute for weather updates and safety tips.

Delayed openings tomorrow in Decatur

City of Decatur government buildings will open at noon tomorrow. This includes City Hall, the Design, Environment and Construction division of Public Works at Talley St. and the Decatur Recreation Center. Evening activities at the Recreation Center are cancelled for tomorrow night, and the center will close early.

Trash & recycling pick up is expected to have a delayed start time of 10 a.m. tomorrow. If sanitation crews can safely get to your rear yard they will pick up trash tomorrow. If they cannot, they will pick it up next week. Please use good sense when deciding if it is safe to put your recycling bin by the curb. If your driveway is too frozen to safely move your bins leave them until next week’s pick up.

While most of the major roads in the City of Decatur are currently clear and mostly dry, GEMA continues to recommend staying off roads. It is possible that roads and sidewalks could refreeze overnight so continue to exercise caution if you decide to leave your house.

While there have been a few minor traffic accidents in the past 24 hours, no one has been seriously injured in the City of Decatur. The community has done a great job of staying safe and warm indoors. If you do require emergency assistance, please call the police non-emergency number 404-373-6551.

Polar Campers had fun yesterday

Twenty-three Kindergarten through 5th graders participated in yesterday’s Polar Camp at the Decatur Recreation Center. Children & Youth Services provided a warm, safe environment to play games, tell stories, and most important, get out of the house!

UPDATE: Please bring a lunch for each child you drop off at Polar Camp.

It’s still really cold out, and City Schools of Decatur will be closed tomorrow. For City of Decatur residents looking for something for the little polar bears (aka children) to do, there will be a special Polar Camp tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St.

Polar Camp is first-come, first served for a limited number of City of Decatur students in Kindergarten through fifth grade only. There is no cost for Polar Camp for Decatur residents. Parents will need to fill out registration and health forms when dropping off campers who are not already enrolled in after school programs.

Despite cold, City Commission meeting tonight

It’s cold out today in Decatur and set to get colder by evening, but tonight’s work session about the draft tree ordinance at 6 p.m. and the regular City Commission meeting at 7:30 p.m. will still take place as scheduled at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

Storm Drainage Improvements Jan. 2

storm waterWeather permitting, Reeves Contracting plans to start installing the new storm sewer on Church Street south of East Maple on January 2.  The new storm sewer will extend from East Maple down Church Street towards the CSX railroad and then east on East Howard Avenue.

Businesses on Church Street between East Maple Street and East Howard Avenue should notify patrons that once work begins, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction, so they will have to approach this area from East Trinity Place.

On-street parking on Church Street will be limited in the immediate area of construction. A schematic plan illustrating temporary traffic changes can be viewed here.

Tuesday = Healthy Eating Indie-Catur

Decatur Active Living and Decatur Tourism have partnered to promote healthy eating with the Eat Well Indie-Catur campaign happening in October. Eat out at any of the participating restaurants, choose the special healthy meal offered on Tuesday, get your tracker card signed by the wait person and you are on your way to earning a recipe collection! How easy is that?

Eat out any three Tuesdays, get those three signatures on your card and then turn your card in at the Decatur Visitors Center to earn your FREE recipes.

There are three Tuesdays left in the month, so get started this week! Cards are available at the participating restaurants.

This is a great opportunity to try some new dishes.

“Eat Well Indie-Catur” every Tuesday in October

October’s “Eat Well Indie-Catur Campaign” starts today. Active Living and the Decatur Visitor’s Center teamed up with local restaurants for this month-long promotion. Diners who eat three healthy entrees on any of the five Tuesdays in October will be rewarded with a recipe collection.

How does it work?

1) Visit a participating restaurant on any Tuesday in October (Cakes & Ale, Café Lily, The Corner Pub, Leon’s, Steinbecks, Twains, Colbeh, Parker’s on Ponce, Universal Joint and Sapori di Napoli).

2) Order the featured healthy entree.

3) Get your “Eat Well Indie-Catur” card signed (Cards are available at participating restaurants and at the Decatur Visitor’s Center).

4) Repeat two more times to earn the Indie-Catur Recipe Collections.

Decatur heads to the cloud

Monitor in VOA environment

Decatur is moving to the cloud! Our software applications will now be on servers at a secure offsite data center (rather than on computers at City Hall), and employees will access their information in the cloud through “thin clients” instead of traditional desktop computers.

We are moving department by department starting with Children & Youth Services in early January with others being phased in over the next two months.

The change enables employees to work from multiple locations, ensures data can be recovered more easily and quickly in the event of a disaster, and reduces the recurring costs of hardware replacement. Plus, there will be quicker software deployments and reduced energy consumption.

We expect internal kinks and bugs at first, but the transition should not interrupt any of the external technology services we provide to the community. Decatur WiFi, the City website, and services such as online job applications, online service requests (CRM), online tax information, online citation payments, registration for recreation and after-school programs, Open City Hall, streaming video of City Commission meetings, and GIS mapping should continue to function normally during the transition.

There are legal requirements for how public safety records should be maintained so for now, the police department will not join us in the cloud. However, the ultimate plan is to move them as well. We’ll keep you posted.
