East Lake Drive Storm Drainage Repairs Start Tuesday, Feb. 21

The City of Decatur will begin storm drainage repairs next week on East Lake Drive between 3rd Ave and Oakview Rd. The project is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and should last 4 days. This section of East Lake Drive will be open to local traffic only. A detour will be provided for all through traffic. See detour map above. Celebrate Arbor Day in Decatur on February 18th

Join us tomorrow (2/18/17) from 10AM to 1PM to learn about trees, talk to arborists, and help plant trees.

Attendees will also have a chance to meet the City’s new Landscape Infrastructure Coordinator/Arborist Kay Evanovich.  Other area arborists will also be there to talk about trees with residents.  And best of all, residents will be able to take home a free tree seedling! This year, the City is giving away 100 trees on a first come first served basis per household.  There are about 50 Catalpa trees and 50 Redbud trees available.

We hope to see you there.

Decatur Active Living Valentines Dance- Update

Decatur Active Living’s annual Valentines Dance for 1st – 3rd grade has been moved to the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St, due to an overwhelming response from parents, and limited capacity in the studio room at Ebster Recreation Center. The RSVP list has maxed out; therefore, the location of the dance has been moved to Decatur Rec. in order to accommodate the additional requests to attend for that age group.

2017 Neighborhood Clean-Up Days

Public Works is gearing up for the 2017 Neighborhood Clean-Up days.

The City offer these days once a year to help residents dispose of bulky items that don’t easily fit into Pay-As-You-Throw bags. Each street in the city is assigned to a Saturday between March and June. Dates for the 2017 event are now available.

Collection Times

All items to be collected should be placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. This ensures that we do not have to rerun routes for late set-outs. Collections run until 3:30 p.m., or until finished, whichever is sooner.

Acceptable Items
• Yard trimmings
• Building materials (not from the work of private contractors)
• Tires
• Furniture
• Appliances (not containing Freon)
• Trash that won’t fit into pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) bags

Materials we will not collect
• Liquids
• Dirt
• Bricks
• Blocks
• Stone, rocks, or concrete
• Motor vehicle batteries or parts

This morning third graders from Westchester Elementary dropped some free art around the square as part of their Human Impact Expedition.

Some of the art has already been found, but there are still a few pieces scattered around. Hint: blue teapot.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week

The National Weather Service and Georgia Emergency Management Agency in conjunction with several other state and local partners will recognize next week (February 6-10, 2017) as Severe Weather Preparedness Week.

Severe weather is no stranger to Georgia as many state residents recently experienced a significant outbreak during January 21-22, 2017, where a record-breaking 41 tornadoes affected much of central and southern Georgia. Severe Weather Preparedness Week is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the dangers of severe weather, as well as knowing how and when to take proper actions when severe weather is expected and hits.  Please take the time now, to review your home/school/businesses preparedness plans as each day is dedicated to a different topic that addresses severe weather preparedness.

Make sure to check out the NWS website and the City’s Facebook page throughout the week for more information on several topics, including:

  • Monday, February 6: Family Preparedness
  • Tuesday, February 7: Thunderstorm Safety
  • Wednesday, February 8: Tornado Safety
  • Thursday, February 9: Lightning Safety

The City of Decatur Municipal Court Offers Amnesty Program

The City of Decatur Municipal Court announces a 2017 Amnesty Program. The program, which begins February 1, 2017, and goes through May 1, 2017, offers amnesty to individuals to resolve past-due traffic citations and active bench warrants for failure to appear in court. It is important to note that a failure to appear in court may result in a driver’s license suspension.  The goal and purpose of the Amnesty Program is to help restore as many drivers as possible to legal status to drive on Georgia roadways and to avoid more harm to their driving history with additional charges and fines. Amnesty will save drivers money as well because warrant and other fees, if any, will be waived.

Individuals with outstanding violations may walk in to the Decatur Municipal Court Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and for individuals unable to come to the court during the week, every other Saturday, specifically February 11 and 25, March 11 and 25 and April 8 and 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00.  Additionally, on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., a full court session is scheduled for individuals with outstanding violations and warrants to resolve their outstanding violations without facing any additional charges or costs. Any person with a failure to appear warrant who pays the fine to resolve the original citation violation will receive documentation to submit to the Department of Drivers Services to have their driver’s license reinstated, if suspended.

Also if the original violation such as DUI, suspended driver’s license or no insurance requires a mandatory court appearance, individuals should appear on Amnesty Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. as well.

The court encourages anyone who believes they may have an outstanding matter in the City of Decatur Municipal Court to take advantage of the Amnesty Program.  The City of Decatur Municipal Court is located at 420 W.
