If you’re retired and looking for ways to keep involved and invested in the community, if you work at home and need to interact with people, or if you just want to give back to Decatur, there may be a place for you behind the Beacon information desk in the Police Department lobby.
The information desk operates daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but those hours may expand if enough volunteers can be trained. Duties include greeting visitors, handing out forms, answering the main City of Decatur phone and answering basic questions about the city and transferring other calls to the appropriate departments.
If you are interested in volunteering at the Beacon information desk, contact Sherry Jackman, sherry.jackman@decaturga.com.

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of February so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 2 February 2017.

If you have questions or want more information about the siren system, check out the Siren page on the City’s website or contact Police Lt. Barry Woodward at 404-373-6551.

There is a possibility of trees being blown down today due to wind gusts.

The ground has been saturated by the recent rains causing the roots of trees to be surrounded by loosened soils. This makes them susceptible to being blown down by wind gusts.

Please use caution around mature trees. Do not park under trees if it can be avoided.

If you have any concerns about the condition of your trees, please contact Kay Evanovich, Kay.Evanovich@decaturga.com.

Installation of the decorative crosswalks is now officially underway.

The city’s downtown crosswalk replacement program includes six crosswalks that will be located along East and West Ponce de Leon Avenues and one in the 100 block of East Trinity Place. Pedestrian crosswalk ramps and asphalt paving have already been installed. The installation of the decorative thermoplastic markings on all of the crosswalks is the final step of the project.
