All Aglow in Decatur

holiday-lights

Decatur is brightening things up as days get shorter and temps get colder! Cultures around the world hold festivals celebrating light during the winter months, and Decatur has joined in by adding sparkle to our seasonal streetscape. Days got darker starting Nov. 4; Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, kicked off on Nov. 7; and Decatur began brightening up over the weekend. You can “bah humbug” if you have to, but deep down you know that bright lights look lovely all winter! – And they shine on shops, restaurants, and local businesses during dark months. Win, win.

Go ahead and get in the spirit! – Decatur already has with Terrific Thursdays, which started Nov. 1 and continue to bring sales, special events, and good cheer through November and December. Mark your calendars for Small Business Saturday and Santa on the Square on Nov. 24, too!

The community is invited to an open house and workshop, Thursday, Nov. 15 from 4-8 pm, to kick-off planning for improvements to the railroad crossing at Atlanta Avenue. Learn about the project scope and schedule and share your vision and ideas about how to make the rail crossing and intersection safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

City of Decatur staff and the design team lead by Landis-Evans & Partners and Atkins will listen to your suggestions, ideas, and concepts about the problems and opportunities at the railroad crossing. This will be the first of at least three workshops over the next several months to help develop a plan for the rail road crossing.

Please plan to drop by the Atlanta Friends Meeting House, 701 West Howard Avenue, anytime during the workshop to learn about the project and share your thoughts.

As everyone has noticed, the new traffic signals at McDonough and Candler are finally being activated. The process, which will result in safer intersections for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, has not been a smooth one. We apologize for the inconvenience many of you have experienced.

Activation began last Thursday. Since then, significant traffic delays have occurred along East Trinity PlaceSouth Candler StreetNorth McDonough Street, and College Avenue.

This has been an unusual project for the City because College Avenue is a state highway and all modifications along it are governed and managed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). GDOT has supplied the technology and hardware being installed at each intersection and is managing the activation and programming of the signals.

Each of the two intersections now feature protected left turns which increases overall cycle times. Finding the right balance between all segments requires a real-world process of observation and adjustment. Adjustments have been made and additional signal time has been added to the most trafficked streets to relieve congestion when possible. This will continue until the best balance is found to provide safe and workable conditions for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

There have also been occasional service interruptions. The default condition when a service interruption takes place is a flashing red signal. Motorists should treat this as an all-way stop until normal service resumes.

Daily reports and observations indicate improvements are occurring. These efforts will continue until acceptable performance returns.
