Bring the kids to the Callaway parking lot and explore trucks from the City of Decatur and DeKalb County fleets. The event is free, but make sure to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation for Feed The Hungry.
Leapin’ Lizards Parent’s Night Out – Saturday, 6:30-10 p.m.
Hosted by the staff of Leapin’ Lizards to provide parents an opportunity to take the evening off while their children have their own fun in a safe and healthy environment. Snacks and a group activity are include. Register here.

This year, I am taking the time to learn how to prepare for severe weather during National Severe Weather Preparedness Week, March 2-8, 2014, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Being prepared to act quickly could be a matter of survival. This is especially evident during the threat of severe weather. The deadliest and most destructive tornado of 2013, an EF-5 on May 20 in Moore, Oklahoma caused more than $2 billion in property damage. Even though severe weather was anticipated days in advance, many in the impacted areas said they did not have a plan and were caught unprepared. And while spring tends to produce more tornadoes, they’re not uncommon in fall. On Nov. 17, a late season tornado outbreak that struck seven Midwestern states became the most active tornado day of 2013 with a total of 74 tornadoes.
Here is what you can do to prepare:
Know Your Risk – Hurricanes, tornadoes and storms – every state in the United States experiences severe weather. Visit weather.gov to get the latest on weather threats.
Take Action – Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a family communications plan, putting an emergency kit together, keeping important papers and valuables in a safe place and learning about Wireless Emergency Alerts.

The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a “Drug Identification & Current Trends” presentation on Wednesday, March 12 from 6:30 p.m – 8:00 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center. The presentation will include information on current trends, street names, paraphernalia and what parents can look for, as well as an overview of what officers are seeing in Decatur. The presentation is FREE and designed for parents, caregivers and anyone who works with kids and teens who want to become more aware. Attendees must be at least 18-years-old. Please contact Sgt. This is my first post as the City of Decatur Archivist. There’s a good bit going on behind the scenes here and I’ll be blogging more in the future as collections are appraised and processed. Decatur has nearly 200 years of history! The records date back to the 1870’s and there’s a lot of work to accomplish to preserve these wonderful records and make them accessible. At this juncture we are in the very early stages of performing appraisal on the City’s collections. Please make sure you come out on March 18th between 5:30 and 7:30 to the Recreation Center for our Touch a Budget event and catch a glimpse of some of the historical records which we have highlighted in this small publication. Neighborhood Clean-Up Days

The City of Decatur offers Neighborhood Clean-Up days once a year to allow residents to dispose of bulky items that wouldn’t normally be placed in Pay-As-You-Throw bags. Each street in the City is assigned to one Saturday each spring, generally between March-June.

The Sugar Creek Garden’s off-the-grid, solar-powered water pump
Site Coordinator/Head Gardener Dara Suchke shared the following information about tomorrow’s tour at Sugar Creek Garden:
Thursday, March 6
5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Part of the Parks and Greenspace Conference, this tour of Sugar Creek Garden will focus on its integration of green infrastructure (sustainable and natural management techniques that harvest, treat and utilize rain runoff in greenspaces). Participants will be shown an innovative, off-the-grid pump system and will learn about water conservation through active and passive rainwater harvesting; these water harvesting techniques are applicable to home and landscapes of all scales. The tour will be led by Wylde Center’s Sugar Creek Garden manager Dara Suchke. Local rain water harvest experts Paul Morgan, Daniel Ballard, and Benjamin Portwood will also be present to add insight to the passive and active rainwater designs currently on-site and in the future designs for the property. Registration is just $20 and space is limited! *Park Pride’s 25th Anniversary Kick-off Event will take place immediately following this tour at Solarium. Thank you to everyone who has tweeted about wanting Google Fiber in Decatur. We love how excited everyone is!
While we’ll be working closely with Google over the next few months to see if Decatur/metro Atlanta is a good fit for their fiber product, we want to continue to show them how much we want Google Fiber in our community. We’ve created a Google+ City of Decatur page, so make sure to +1 us if you’re on Google+. Also, we want to hear from you. Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of March so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 6 March 2014.

Heather Tell purchased a Lunch With the Mayor at Oakhurst Elementary’s Auction for her daughters Greta & Liza. Greta, Liza & Heather met up with the Mayor at City Hall for a tour of City Hall. They learned about what they City Commission does here with the Mayor in the City Commission meeting room.
They ran into State Legislator Mary Margaret Oliver on the way to lunch.
Thanks for the awesome thank you note Greta & Liza – we had a great time!
