bad sidewalk

Sidewalks covered in leaves and debris like this one are not fun – or safe! – for students (and adults) to walk on.

It’s back to school time, which means you’ll be seeing more children and teens walking to and from school during the week. Decatur residents have invested millions of dollars in the installation and maintenance of sidewalks, but all too often pedestrians find themselves in unsafe situations where a sidewalk is overgrown with residential landscape plants or covered with slippery leaves or landscape debris.

Per city code, residents are responsible for the upkeep and de-littering of their property all the way to the curb. Please prune plants to behind the edge of the sidewalk and make sure there is at least seven feet of clearance overhead so that pedestrians don’t have to dodge low branches as they walk.

Keep the sidewalk in front of your home clear of debris and vegetation in every season. The children (and adults) depend on you to keep the neighborhood safe for walkers.

The City of Decatur Police Department is pleased to announce it has received a grant for $8,000 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grant was awarded to purchase a CMI Intoxilyzer 9000, which will replace the current Intoxilyzer 5000.  The state has mandated all law enforcement agencies to replace older testing units by 2015.  The Intoxilyzer 9000 is utilized in obtaining the implied consent state administered breath test for prosecution of DUI offenders.

“The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is committed to keeping everyone safe on our roads and highways, from the smallest precious cargo to the most seasoned drivers,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. “This grant will help the City of Decatur Police Department reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Georgia roadways.”

The Decatur Police Department is extremely grateful to receive the grant because it enhances our efforts in reducing the number of impaired drivers on our roadways.  We have averaged approximately 100 DUI arrests per year in recent years.

2010 – 117

2011 – 103

2012 – 97

2013 – 117

2014 – 88

As a grant recipient, the Decatur Police Department must participate in a regional traffic network and also in national highway safety campaigns including Click-it or Ticket and Operation Zero Tolerance.

The grant was obtained by Sgt. Billy Woodruff.

Tax Free Wkd 2014

Boogaloos Boutique is celebrating the tax free weekend by covering your taxes on all merchandise – even the items that don’t qualify. Big Peach Running is doing the same and wrote a poem in honor of the weekend:

A special occasion that happens once a year
The Georgia Sales Tax Holiday is cause for big cheer!

The law lets you save tax on apparel and shoes,
If the price is less than $100 on whatever you choose.

We think that’s fine, but we can do better,
Which is what promoted this week’s extra newsletter.

No matter what you buy, no matter the price,
Sales tax is one us. . . isn’t that nice?!

The holiday runs today and tomorrow,
And missing out would be cause of great sorrow

Whether you run, walk, hike, or take the bus,
Sales tax on everything is totally on us!
