The Decatur Makers share the following invitation to the entire community:
DecMakerLogo
Decatur residents are invited to explore the future home of Decatur Makers this Wednesday, June 18 at 8 p.m. (in the old gym at First Christian Church of Decatur, across from the post office).

The all-ages “makerspace” is slated to open later this summer. Imagine a wood shop, metal shop, computer lab, electronics shop, arts and crafts and more all under one roof, with equipment and expertise to help explore and build interesting things.

Wednesday’s sneak preview / open house will feature maker demonstrations, a preview of renovation plans and more about memberships and other news.

A pre-event mingle will be held at Marlay House Pub starting at 6 p.m., with part of food and drink proceeds benefitting the not-for-profit Decatur Makers.

If you’ve ever wanted to get a look inside that old church gym – and see its makerspace future – RSVP for the event at www.DecaturMakers.org.

The event coincides with the June 18 “National Day of Making” (proclaimed by the White House).

Tracie Sanchez with Decatur Active Living shares the following time change for Walk with a Doc:

WWAD Time = 10:00 am every Wednesday

Georgia is heating up and so is our city, so we will walk earlier in the day. Beginning next week on June 11 we will depart at 10am for our walk and continue through June/July/August. Yes, that means we are leaving an hour earlier.  Active Adults that we polled voted to have a leisurely breakfast routine at home and then come walk, so 10am wins!

Walk With a Doc is a free, group walking program, that occurs weekly at the Decatur Recreation Center. We are local chapter of http://www.walkwithadoc.org and offer 7 routes across the city and average about 3 miles weekly at an easy pace. We have a doc join us and a CAPS volunteer walk with us to keep us safe at crossings and around hazards. Usually about 10-15 walkers arrive for the walk and enjoy a informal chat with a different doc each week. Below is a list of docs who have led our walks and we are always recruiting for more. We start each walk with a quick intro, grab some water, and head out.

Instructor

Staffer Tracie leads along with the guest Doc, and the CAPS volunteer brings up the back. Our routes are on sidewalks and in greenspace throughout the city. Everyone enjoys the chat while walking 2×2 and it has become quite social. Come meet some new folks and ramp up your fitness routine. Sometimes we try new tools like trekking poles, chi walking, cooling neck scarves, pre-post walk stretching sessions.

Free shirt to those who walk

Walking is the one activity that everyone can do without special gear although we do recommend a good, supportive shoe, water, and a sun visor. We issue Walk With a Doc shirts to all walkers and Docs who complete one walk with us. Come get your shirt!

See you at 10am every Wednesday, meet Tracie in the lobby!

. . . at least it’s the last Concert on the Square for the season. If you miss this one, you’ll have to wait until the first Saturday in September for the next concert. And you definitely don’t want to miss tomorrow night’s concert because it’s going to be a good one. SHEL is playing – that’s the band in the photo below.

Here’s what they’re about:

Hailing from Fort Collins, Colorado, sisters Sarah, Hannah, Eva, and Liza were raised in an atmosphere of creative freedom and diligent study. They have honed their musical skills and blended their personalities and visions into a unified whole. From their fetching, unpredictable songs to their whimsical, hand-made top hats, SHEL makes a profound impression. Their growing audiences and critical acclaim point to a full and fruitful career ahead.

And here’s what the concerts committee says about them:

SHEL made a big impression recently at Eddie’s Attic and we are sure you will be blown away by the creativity, originality, and stage persona of each of these talented sisters. We predict that their success will only grow, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to see them here in Decatur.

Are you convinced? Good! Pack a picnic and come up to the bandstand around 7-ish (come early for a better spot) and settle down for a fun evening on the square.

PS: There’s a chance of rain. If the concert is cancelled, we’ll announce it on Twitter @downtownDecatur.
