-The Historic DeKalb Courthouse will be transformed musically and visually into a speakeasy for the DeKalb History Center’s 12th Annual Black History Month Celebration! Downtown Cycle Track

If weather permits, the final phase of the downtown cycle track connecting Commerce Drive with McDonough Street will begin Monday, Feb. 10. The work will take place on the northern/Courthouse side of West Trinity Place and is expected to take about 4 weeks to complete. West Trinity Place will remain open to traffic throughout the process but motorists should expect occasional delays. For updates on this project and others, visit decaturmakeover.com

This Weekend 02072020

-Join the Friends of the Decatur Library for their annual winter book sale this Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will be held inside the lower level of the Decatur Library. Visit Friends of the Decatur Library on Facebook for more details.

-The Mead Road Mardi Gras Parade will be on Saturday, Feb. 8. Parade steps off at 1 p.m. from 4/5 Academy and marches up Oakview to Mead Road and ends at The Imperial. Check out meadrdmardigras.org for more information.

-Come dance the night away with L’Arche Atlanta at their annual Valentine’s Dance and Potluck dinner happening this Saturday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. Put on your dancing shoes and bring a savory dish to share (desserts provided). The February test of the Tornado Outdoor Warning Siren System will happen today (02/05/2020) at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Friday, 7 February 2020.

-The Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable (SART) is a monthly event hosted by Southface Energy Institute. They have selected Agnes Scott as the location for their February SART on Friday, Feb. 7 in Campbell Hall from 7-9 a.m. The topic will be sustainability projects at higher ed institutions.

For those unable to attend, an open city hall survey on the City’s website will follow the meeting.

Visionary Cities Award1

The City of Decatur received the inaugural Visionary City Award presented by Georgia Trend magazine and GMA during the association’s Cities United Summit in Atlanta on Sunday, Jan. 26. Decatur was recognized for its Better Together initiative, which brought together more than 800 residents who contributed more than 1,300 hours to the yearlong visioning and outreach project aimed at creating a more diverse and welcoming city.

Nine cities from across Georgia represented three population categories: small (under 4,999), medium (5,000-24,999) and large (25,000 and over), these cities have created positive community change through effective civic engagement and collaboration and have fostered healthy working relationships that make their communities places where people truly love to live and work.

Other winning cities include Hogansville, Donalsonville, Winterville, Adel, Thomasville, Marietta, Chamblee, and Sugar Hill.

Judges for the 2020 Visionary City Award represented influential entities including Georgia Power, the Department of Community Affairs and the Atlanta Regional Commission. In addition to being recognized during GMA’s Cities United Summit, winning cities will be highlighted in the February issue of Georgia Trend.
