The marching Blue Lions Band visiting from Rastede, Germany, will be playing on the Old Courthouse Square on Wednesday, October 14th at noon. We were honored that they participated in the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival Parade this past Saturday. If you missed them, come up to the Bandstand tomorrow at noon to see and hear their great performance.

It is going to be an “artful” weekend in Decatur!

PrintOn Saturday, October 10, join the community for the 12th annual Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival. Over 50 artists, music all afternoon ending with the wonderful (and one of my favorites) Heaven Davis Band from 5 – 7 pm, a Community Pavilion featuring City of Decatur non-profit groups and a great Children’s Area. The festival hours are 10 am until 7 pm, and preceeded by the annual Arts Run beginning at 8 am.

After the festival, head over to Church Street in downtown Decatur for three photography exhibits. In conjunction with Atlanta Celebrates Photography, there will be an opening reception for “Ninos” by Vicki Regan at Mingei from 7 until 10 pm. The Seen Gallery, Taste  and Java Monkey will also join in the spirit with concurrent exhibits. The Seen Gallery will feature photographer Jamie Squire,  a Kansas City-based editorial and commercial photographer specializing in sports.

On Sunday, October 11th, the First Baptist Church of Decatur invites the community to “Postcards from Paris”, a musical performance by the Atlanta Symphony Communty Orchestra. The concert begins at 3:30 pm and is free to the community. The First Baptist Church is located at 308 Clairemont Avenue in Decatur.

Worthmore Jewelers is excited to announce “The Trail to Happiness”, their first juried exhibition in partnership with Atlanta Celebrates Photography. The exhibition will kick off with an Opening Reception on Saturday, October 3rd from 5 until 8 pm in the Decatur Store. You will have an opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy hors d’oeuvres as well as their signature rum punch. If you can’t get by for the opening, the show runs through November 6.

yard-sale-bwThe Decatur High School Band program is holding a massive yard sale this Saturday, 3 October from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. at Intown Ace Hardware on Scott Blvd. Don’t miss this opportunity to find some great deals AND help our talented world-traveling marching band raise some much needed funds for the band, drill team, and color guard! The DHS Band Booster Yard Sale will be held in conjunction with the Intown Ace Hardware Annual Yard Sale at 1404 Scott Blvd with their generous sponsorship.

Dogtoberfest

On Sunday, October 4th,  from 2 until 6 pm, it is time for Dogtoberfest at the Solarium in Oakhurst. The event is sponsored by local businesses to benefit improvements to the Oakhurst Dog Park. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for food, beverages and Dogtoberfest activities.

Events will include:

> Mutt Strutt starting at the Taj Ma-Hound Bakery for Dogs and ending on the Solarium lawn.  Costumes are welcome with prizes for Scariest, Goofiest, Prettiest, Funniest, Best Group Costume and Most Original.

The Conundrums

The Conundrums

The weather is looking good for the last Blue Sky Concert for 2009. Join us on the Old Courthouse Square Wednesday at noon and enjoy the Conundrums, an all women African drumming group. You may have heard them at the Decatur Arts Festival or other venues around  Atlanta. They are fun to listen and dance to, and you might even get a chance to participate!

Pack a picninc lunch or get something yummy from one of the many Decatur Restaurants.

Get ready for another fun time with family and friends; it’s the 2nd Annual Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day Pep Rally, 6:30 to 7:30 pm, Tuesday, October 6th on the Decatur Square.

safe_routes_color_250Join us on the square for music, games, prizes, entertainment and special guests. The following day, Wednesday, Oct. 7th, is National Walk to School Day. Decatur Active Living staff and parent volunteers will be out that morning at Clairemont, Oakhurst and Winnona Park elementary schools and Glennwood Academy with healthy snacks for students and coffee for parents.

the-artistThe Artists at Beacon Hill Studios invite the community to their 4th Annual Studio Tour on Friday, September 25 from 5 until 9 pm and on Saturday, September 26 from 3 until 7 pm.  The event will also include outdoor sculpture in the open courtyard and sculptural welding demos, as well as music performed throughout the evening. The Tour is a special benefit for the Decatur High School Arts Program and 20% of any artwork sole will be donated to them. Suggested donation at the door is $5.
