Hurricane Nate may arrive as a tropical storm in the metro Atlanta area during daylight hours on Sunday, October 8. Heavy rains and strong winds are possible and tornadoes could be a risk from Sunday into Monday, which means we could also experience downed trees and loss of power.

The 7th annual Madison Avenue Soapbox Derby will take place this Saturday, October 7, at 11 a.m.
Cheer on over 90 racers take their turn down the hill in homemade soapbox derby cars.
Food from Oakhurst Market, Steinbeck’s, Universal Joint, Matador, Steel City Pops and the neighborhood bake sale will be available.
There will also be a beverage tent sponsored by The Faction, Red Hare Brewing, Three Taverns, Decatur Package & Publix.

Today is the first Wednesday of October so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 5 October 2017.

Come get your heart and take part in the renowned worldwide art project about mindfulness.
Mind the Heart Project is in Decatur this weekend, and inviting you to share your favorite and beloved spots in the city. The project archives thousands of spots of significance by people of all walks of life, showing that “everywhere means something to someone at some point, so walk around with open eyes and an open heart”.
This Saturday, 1pm-5pm, Artists Maya & Roie will be at the Decatur City Square handing out 100 hearts for you to put out there. Your chosen spots and stories will become an exhibition at the Decatur Arts Alliance, opening Friday, October 6th.

Over the past few months, Decatur residents and staff have explored ideas to improve the safety, comfort, and sense of place along West Howard Avenue. The Reimagine West Howard Avenue study is complete and includes a corridor that has been redesigned into an equitable multi-modal, livelier street, using public art, landscaping, street furniture, lighting, and programming.
Join us for a community information meeting on Thursday, October 12 as city staff shares project findings on how this corridor can be improved.

Mark your calendars for the Fall Electronics Recycling event. Gather your old electronics, documents and even styrofoam to be recycled and shredded.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017 (9 am to 1 pm)
LOCATION: Decatur Public Works, 2635 Talley St. (Enter from Columbia Drive)
Recyclables must be dropped off during the hours of the event. Early drop-offs are not possible.
The fee for recycling cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs is $10 per TV set, and the fee for CRT monitors is $5 ea. Cash only, exact change required.
There is no charge to recycle other items. Any metro area resident can participate.

Update: Due to the threat of inclement weather, the tree tour has been rescheduled for October 28 from 4-7 p.m.
Join local arborists for a walk through the Decatur Cemetery. Learn about some of Decatur’s trees, tree types and needs, and listen to tree talks and stories. The event is free, but donations benefiting the Friends of Decatur Cemetery and Women Arborists of the Southeast are accepted. Visit Eventbrite to register.
