Earth Day Committee Making Plans for 2009 Event

The Decatur Earth Day committee met last week to begin planning for the 2009 Earth Day Festival to be held on Saturday, April 18 in Harmony Park. As you can imagine, this is an energetic group of people with a lot of great ideas. The festival will feature children’s earth-friendly activities as well as earth-friendly vendors, storytelling, music, and a community information section.

The city’s new Fire Chief, Toni Dixon, sat in on the meeting. Chief Dixon is interested in learning about the work all of the city departments do, and was shadowing Greg White for the day.

Sally Wylde, former director of the Oakhurst Community Garden, is organizing  a special project this year: The Greening of the Greenspaces in Decatur. Interested artists and members of the community are wanted to transform the city greenspaces into temporary works of art. If you are interested, visit www.oakhurstgarden.org for more information on participating in this new project.

The Earth Day committee is also planning to have an “Green Parade” and is looking for members of the community to help with the planning. Our next meeting will be held on February 19th at 10am. If you are interested in joining the fun, contact greg.white@decaturga.com.

2009 Severe Weather Awareness Week

Right before I started writing this entry I read Decatur Metro’s post about Decatur High School’s Career Awareness Week next week. Well, believe it or not, the week of February 1-7 is also Severe Weather Awareness Week in Georgia!

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the National Weather Service have a list on Ready Georgia of emergency preparedness topics that you and your family can learn about throughout the week.

There will be a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, Feb. 4. (designated as Tornado Safety Day) around 9 a.m. It’s primarily for the schools to test their plans, but you may hear the Emory or Agnes Scott sirens go off.

There’s also a potential winter weather warning for some type of freezing rain/snow mix late next Monday and early Tuesday. So get a head start on your emergency preparedness by visiting Ready Georgia, making sure you’re signed up for Decatur’s CodeRED Weather Warning and download a copy of the City’s Emergency Management booklet.

Several Dancers Core Invites You to Lunch

lunchtimedancersAs a former ballet dancer I could talk your ear off (but I won’t) about how I don’t think ballet companies are in touch with their audiences today. However, I would never apply that criticism to Decatur’s local contemporary dance company Several Dancers Core.

Several Dancers Core understands that not everyone is a dance afficionado and that most people don’t have the time or money to  go see a dance performance a couple times a year. So every other month SDC hosts Lunchtime in the Studio. Anyone can come to a Lunchtime session, eat some delicious food donated by local restaurants and get a preview of the company’s current works.

The next Lunchtime in the Studio session is this Friday, Feb. 6 from noon to 1 p.m. Admission is free and lunch is provided by Saba, Brick Store and Starbucks for the first 40 who arrive.

State of the City Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended the Decatur Business Association meeting to hear the State of the City address last night. What a great turnout! For those of you who were unable to make it, Decatur eLife will be posting a video of the event within the next few days.

Upcoming Early February Events at Hoopla

Sabrina from Hoopla just sent us a list of fun events they have planned at the store starting this weekend. Parents, take note of the Drop Off Valentine Party!

Stop by Hoopla this weekend to kick off the Super Bowl Party! January 31st and February 1st to decorate a paper football helmet in our craft area. 

Thursday, February 5th 7-9pm. Join us for a knitting class at Hoopla with Alex Norton of Lil’ Sprout Knits.  Cost is $10. Reservations required. Please register by February 4th. We will be hosting a trunk show before hand from 6-8pm. 

Saturday, February 7th Join us at The Loft for Baby Loves Disco! 11-2pm It is a kids Valentine Ball. A family style disco party with DJ Yvonne Monet.  www.babylovesdisco.com for more information and ticket sales.

Saturday, February 14th we will be hosting a Valentine Party from 11am-1pm. Drop off Valentine party! This is a perfect opportunity  for you to go to lunch with your sweetie while we entertain the kids! Party will include a pizza lunch, cupcake decorating-(cupcakes from Sweet –n-Sinful-yummy), make valentines for Mom and Dad plus a story time too. Decatur City Dance Presents Annual Winter Dance Concert

dec-city-danceDecatur City Dance, the oldest performing dance group in DeKalb County, performs their popular Winter Dance concert at the Monsignor Terry W. Young Center for Performing Arts on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7.  The performance features more than a dozen pieces of original ballet, jazz, modern and swing pieces designed to mesmerize children and adults alike.  This year, the acclaimed tapper Josh Hilberman (www.hilbermania.com) will present a unique tap piece. When not joining the Decatur dancers, Josh can be seen in places like Lincoln Center or on stage with Manhattan Tap. 

 

This year’s Winter Dance concert features inventively choreographed pieces set to music from artists as diverse as Cold Play, Nora Jones and Debussy.  Additionally, Decatur’s acclaimed Rug Cutters, the zesty Swing Dance troupe, will perform a few numbers along with Birda Ringstad’s Rhythm Keepers Tap.

Ken Will Morton Performs FREE Show at Twains on February 5th

ken-will-morton1Ken Will Morton will be performing a free show at Twain’s on Thursday, February 5th at 8:30 p.m.

With four releases under his belt, his music has been praised by No Depression, Harp, Paste Magazine, An Honest Tune, American Songwriter, Stomp & Stammer, Southeast Performer, Performing Songwriter, Relix and more. 

In June of 2008, Ken Will released two records on the newly formed Rara Avis Records:  Devil In Me is a straight-out rock record, while Kickin’ Out The Rungs is more acoustic based and includes a song he co-wrote with Kristen Hall (ex-Sugarland).    CD reviews have already been secured for Southeast Performer, Georgia Music Magazine, Vintage Guitar, and American Songwriter.

 

Ken was recently reviewed in Creative Loafing:

“He’s a little bit country and little bit rock’n’roll, a fact reflected on his new releases, Kickin’ Out The Rungs and Devil In Me.   The former works an acoustic vibe that runs from folksy Dylanesque ballads to ambling backwoods roots rock, and the latter mines Morton’s hell-bound predilections with barroom stomps and garagabilly grime and rumble.”

City of Decatur Budget Focus Group Meetings Scheduled

budget-mtgThe community is invited to participate in the City of Decatur Budget Focus Group kick-off meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Commission Conference Room on the first floor of City Hall at 509 N. McDonough Street.  This will be the first of three focus group meetings regarding the fiscal year 2009-2010 budget.  Subsequent meetings are scheduled for April 14, 2009 and May 12, 2009. 

 

The budget focus group meetings were first held in 2002.  Because of the success and contribution of the focus groups to the budget process, the City continues to invite active citizen participation in the budget process through these focus groups.

 

The goal of the focus group meetings is to provide relevant budget and financial information in an informal environment so that participants can better understand the City’s budget process including how revenue and expenditure recommendations are made.  The first meeting will provide an opportunity to ask questions and share concerns  about the City’s budget and tax rates as well as providing citizen insight into what should be the City’s financial priorities for the coming year.  City staff will be available to respond to questions and provide an overview of the budget process.

The Seen Gallery Invites you to a Sneak Preview

boudreauxblackwaterThe Seen Gallery has relocated to downtown Decatur.  Conveniently located at 415 Church Street, the new space is two doors down from Java Monkey coffee and wine bar and one door down from Mingei World Arts, directly across from the Decatur Marta train station.

From Bill Bibb: “We, and our talented artists, are tremendously excited about the new space and the opportunity to more efficiently serve the art community.  We plan to resume regular, expanded business hours in mid February.  We have been working hard to open for business as soon as possible.  More than a few fresh coats of paint and we are almost there. We invite you to plan to attend our sneak preview, have a glass of wine with us, and talk with us about our plans for the new venue. The open house is presented in association with ATLart09, 18 days of city wide gallery openings, museum exhibitions, and lectures.”
