Here are a few holiday shopping safety tips from Sgt. Jennifer Ross of the Decatur Police Department:

  • Be alert and aware! It’s easy to be distracted by the crowds, selecting the right gift, being preoccupied with holiday activities.
  • Keep shopping bags, valuables, purses, and wallets close to you. Keep purses or bags closed.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason and watch out for friendly strangers. They may ask a question or offer to assist you with your bags to distract you or put you in a compromising situation.  At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.
  • Stay alert while you are walking to your car. Talking or texting on your phone or digging in your purse for your keys while walking is a distraction and makes you an easy target.

terrific thursday sign in window

Look for this sign in the window of participating Decatur businesses.

Terrific Thursdays continue tonight in Decatur! Not only can you find bargains and refreshments while shopping locally, but you can enjoy the new lights around the Square while riding the Pedicab. Wow- was there enough information in that sentence?

Seriously, tonight (and every Thursday through December 17) is the night you will want to shop Decatur. Businesses and restaurants are staying open late and offering discounts or refreshments, or both. We have also hired the Pedicab to transport you and your packages from place to place. Look for their lights and “Free Rides” signs.

What fun to walk around Decatur on such a beautiful morning. I was out checking out some more gift ideas for Valentine’s Day. I stopped in By Hand South and saw a lot items that would make great gifts. In addition to the great one of a kind handmade jewelry selection, By Hand South also has great gift items such as glassware, carved wood, metal and more.

Mingei has a lot of unique gifts as well. I bought myself a lovely pendant that states I am the “Queen of Everything”! How fun is that? I was tempted by the freshwater pearls, earrings and bracelets as well, but decided one gift for myself was enough.  Mingei has merchandise at all price points, so you are sure to find something that you cannot live without.

The Seventeen Steps has a nice selection of Valentine gifts. They always have great displays which makes it easy to locate the new items.

And because it is Valentine’s weekend I could not resist adding a photo of our Valentine Couple in front of the Old Courthouse.

I love to shop and I love bargains, so Decatur is the place for me! Walking through Decatur, I have seen  many signs for sales and other items that I think would be perfect for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Whit’s End on Ponce de Leon has deeply discounted their winter items to make room for the new spring merchandise. And let’s face it, this warm weather in February will not last. This is a great opportunity to pick up something new and fresh to wear for the remaining cold weather, or to keep your loved one warm for Valentine’s weekend.

rockit-50-offRockit Boutique on the Square is having a 50% off Winter Merchandise Sale. I can’t wait to wear the new skirt I purchased. It will take me right into Spring! Of course I had to buy some hoop earrings to accessorize.

Boutique Karma on Church Street is also having a sale. Many items in the store are marked down 25 to 80%.  The Boutique has women’s bouti-karma-sign1clothing, shoes, accessories and more. Stop in for a look and I bet you will find an item or two that you want to take home.

Squash Blossom has a great window display wishing you “love” in many languages. I know many women who would love to receive a gift from here. The sign outside says they have received  new HOBO and Free People. Stop in and check it out.squash-blos-window

Both Squash Blossom and Kaleidoscope Boutique have a sale section in the back of the store so if you are looking for more bargains, head to the back. I know, it is hard to make it to the back when so many of the new fashions tempt you!

There are many more shops in Decatur, and if you know of any other sales, please let us know. We will be out and about this week searching for Valentine’s gifts for our loved ones.

Hope to see you around town.

boudreauxblackwaterThe Seen Gallery has relocated to downtown Decatur.  Conveniently located at 415 Church Street, the new space is two doors down from Java Monkey coffee and wine bar and one door down from Mingei World Arts, directly across from the Decatur Marta train station.

Plan to attend the sneak preview this Friday, January 23,  7-10 PM

From Bill Bibb: “We, and our talented artists, are tremendously excited about the new space and the opportunity to more efficiently serve the art community.  We plan to resume regular, expanded business hours in mid February.  We have been working hard to open for business as soon as possible.  More than a few fresh coats of paint and we are almost there. We invite you to plan to attend our sneak preview, have a glass of wine with us, and talk with us about our plans for the new venue. The open house is presented in association with ATLart09, 18 days of city wide gallery openings, museum exhibitions, and lectures.”

    Mark your calendars!

The Seen “Grand Reopening” will be on Saturday, March 7, 7-10 PM

Tomorrow evening will be the first Terrific Thursday in December, which means two things:

1.) Santa will be out and about, visiting the shops and handing out candy canes! and…
2.) Two Terrific Thursday shuttles (Cliff buses) will be circling Decatur to take shoppers around town. The route and all ten stops can be found on the map here.

    shuttlesigns
Each stop is marked with one of these fancy Shuttle Stop signs. Special Events Coordinator, Cheryl Burnette, is an expert at getting the signs in the ground – in heels no less!

We’re also excited about our brand new Terrific Thursday signs featuring a festive flamingo and penguin (we figured reindeers and polar bears were overused this time of year). Five of these signs will appear around the city every Thursday night until Christmas. Take a picture of you and your family standing by one of these signs, send it to us and we’ll include it on this blog!

    flamingo
Jeff, owner of Whit’s End, is kindly helping us out by taking care of the West Ponce Terrific Thursday sign for the next few weeks. He’ll be placing it outside on his end of the street each Thursday. Can you find the other four? *Hint: check out where Juan and I are standing in the photo above.*

A couple of highlights for this week’s Terrific Thursdays:

Dresscodes is throwing a two year anniversary party with a great art show opening. These events are always a lot of fun and the best part is you can still do some holiday shopping while you’re mingling with the crowd.

greensfinefoodsThis Thursday at Greene’s make your own gingerbread house from 3 to 8 p.m. The folks over at Greene’s will help you get in the holiday spirit and entertain your kids while you shop in the store at 10% off. The cost is $15 per house and is first come, first serve.
