Decaturga.com Gets a (Small) Facelift

We are currently working on a website audit, which will result in a complete revamping of the City’s site. This process will take some time, so we decided to spruce up the current site just a little bit with the hopes that it’ll be easier to navigate. Recent changes include:

1.) Replacing the “Quick Links” in the top bar with “Residents,”  “Visitors” and “Businesses” drop down menus (see image above).

2.) Expanding the links on the left sidebar on interior pages (see image below).

3.) Changing the color scheme slightly to more earthy tones (see images above and below). These are the same colors that we use on the Shopping, Dining and Services map and the maps on the outdoor kiosks.

These minor changes won’t revolutionize the way you use the site, but hopefully they’ll make it a little more user-friendly. Feel free to leave a comment and let us know what you think.

When you think of Valentine’s Day, what comes to mind? Why a big red heart filled with chocolates, of course!  Wild Seed Boutique on Ponce de Leon is having a Valentine’s Day Sale that lasts through Monday. Entering “Wild Seed” is like entering a New York Boutique. You will be sure to find some unique clothing for yourself or your Valentine.

Mingei World Arts located on Church Street is carrying “Sweeties Sugar Scrub”, an all natual skin slougher concocted by a former nutritionist and chef who is a friend of Ann, the owner. The scrub contains argan oil from a bedouin women’s co-op in Morocco. Mingei also has a new selection of jewelry and silk that has just arrived from Thailand. Stop in to find some unique gifts for yourself or loved ones.

Shop Local for Valentine's Day Bargains

I love to shop and I love bargains, so Decatur is the place for me! Walking through Decatur, I have seen  many signs for sales and other items that I think would be perfect for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Whit’s End on Ponce de Leon has deeply discounted their winter items to make room for the new spring merchandise. And let’s face it, this warm weather in February will not last. This is a great opportunity to pick up something new and fresh to wear for the remaining cold weather, or to keep your loved one warm for Valentine’s weekend.

rockit-50-offRockit Boutique on the Square is having a 50% off Winter Merchandise Sale. I can’t wait to wear the new skirt I purchased. It will take me right into Spring! Of course I had to buy some hoop earrings to accessorize.

 

 

Boutique Karma on Church Street is also having a sale. Many items in the store are marked down 25 to 80%.  The Boutique has women’s bouti-karma-sign1clothing, shoes, accessories and more. Stop in for a look and I bet you will find an item or two that you want to take home.

 

 

Squash Blossom has a great window display wishing you “love” in many languages. I know many women who would love to receive a gift from here. The sign outside says they have received  new HOBO and Free People. Stop in and check it out.squash-blos-window

Both Squash Blossom and Kaleidoscope Boutique have a sale section in the back of the store so if you are looking for more bargains, head to the back. I know, it is hard to make it to the back when so many of the new fashions tempt you!

Green Tips for Decatur Event Planners Now Available

The former Waste Managment Advisory Board, working with the Public Works Director and the Special Events Coordinator, has produced a guide  for “greening” events, block parties and other gatherings in the city of Decatur. The brochure is available for downloading at www.decaturga.com or at Decatur City Hall.

The Guide offers many tips for planning a special event beginning with selecting the location, planning purchases to minimize waste on the front end, planning for recycling and food waste and more. The guide also encourages planners to educate the attendees on protecting the environment.

The Decatur Business Association has already jumped on the “green” wagon. Food vendors at the June Beach Party will be required to use biodegradable paper goods as well as recycle plastic, glass and cardboard. The Public Works Department will also be on hand to distribute information on the City’s recycling plan and give out tattoos with the recycling logo. As you may know, all city sponsored events currently include both trash cans and recycling containers for plastic, metal and glass. We hope to encourage all event planners, both large and small, to recycle and produce greener events.

Leon's is Truly Full Service

Th new gastro pub, Leon’s, opened for a practice night for friends and family over the weekend. Owners Dave, Mike and Tom were on hand to greet everyone, and were in good spirits, as they should have been. They did a very nice interior renovation. The bar was very welcoming, as were all the servers and employees.

We enjoyed a variety of tasty appetizers, including french fries with various dips, a tasty salad and a carrot hummus dip with bread. The scallop entree that I had for dinner was especially good. Of course we had to try some dessert, and the cobbler and the waffles were definitely crowd pleasers.

Good atmosphere, good food…the Brick Store guys have done it again! Be sure to stop by and check it out. The Grand Opening is on Monday night.

First Pint at Leon's

We know everyone is getting excited about Leon’s Full Service and now the owners have given us one more reason to look forward to the opening (which will be Sunday or Monday). They’re auctioning off the right to buy the very first pint at Leon’s with all the proceeds going to the Trackside Tavern/Fifth Earl Employee Fund. If this doesn’t epitomize why Decatur is such a great community, I don’t know what does!

A big thanks to Daren Wang (of the Decatur Book Festival) and The Brickstore guys for thinking this up.

Decatur Green Fest Poster Contest Deadline February 6th

Calling all graphic designers! You still have time to get your poster design entered for the Decatur Green Fest.  The deadline for the Poster Contest is February 6th – that’s this Friday.  The winner recieves $200 and the opportunity to have their artwork seen throughout the city on the festival’s official poster.

The Decatur Green Fest, scheduled for Saturday, May 2, beneifts the Decatur Preservation Alliance and the Dogwood Alliance. The event is being organzied by a great group of volunteers including  Mike Gallagher of the Brick Store Pub, Eddie Owen of Eddie’s Attic, John The Baker of the Dogwood Alliance, and many more. Plans for the 2009 festival include children’s activities, organic food, “green” vendors, artists and ongoing live music throughout the afternoon ending with the evening Concert on the Square.

Gwen Ifill Cancels Tonight's Appearance at Agnes Scott College

ATLANTA (Feb. 3, 2009) — Tonight’s appearance at Agnes Scott College by PBS journalist Gwen Ifill has been canceled because of a death in the journalist’s family.

 

Ifill, news analyst for the program Washington Week, and senior correspondent for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, was scheduled to speak at Agnes Scott College tonight at 7 p.m., Gaines Chapel, Presser Hall. 

 

She hopes to reschedule for a later date. Information: 404-471-6430.

New Topics at Decatur Open City Hall

We added two new topics for discussion on Open City Hall:

1.) Should the City continue its Smart Growth strategy in downtown Decatur?
2.) Should major intersections be rebuilt to promote bicycle and pedestrian uses, even if motorists are inconvenienced?

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Open City Hall forum on Annexation. The statements were shared with the commissioners. They voted unanimously to defer consideration of a large-scale annexation plan and revisit the issue in 2011.

Although the Annexation topic is closed, the Urban Farming forum is still open for comments.
