Corner Pub BagsCatherine Lee and I went over to the Corner Pub for dinner on Tuesday night, and were pleasantly surprised to find that they are re-using plastic bags for take-out orders.  We both got bags from the DeKalb Farmers Market, while the gentlemen sitting next to us got a Target bag.

Going green doesn’t have to be difficult, even for restaurants.  It can start with little steps as simple as re-using old grocery bags.

Barry at Home With His Guitar

Barry at Home With His Guitar

“In 1972, a group of talented musicians came together to form the Southern Rock Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section. During the next 35 years the band would earn gold and platinum records, as well as a place in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.”

One of the original members of that band is Decatur’s own Barry Bailey!  Barry began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and while attending Decatur High School, joined a small garage band. The rest is history.

Barry will be returning to Decatur on Friday, June 19, for the annual Decatur Beach Party. Mayor Bill Floyd will be presenting Mr. Bailey a key to the City as well as reading a proclamation declaring June 19, 2009 as “Barry Bailey Day”. The presentation will be made at the Main Stage on the MARTA Plaza at 7:45pm, before the band begins to play.

For more information or to buy tickets for Beach Party, visit www.decaturdba.com. Tickets are $6.50 in advance, $10 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free, limit two with each paying adult.

See you on Decatur Beach!

The Colors of Decatur

Hey all!

I thought I’d share some of the really cool color combinations on historic buildings located in Decatur.   Color is a great way to express yourself and the colors of historic buildings and houses in Decatur show that we really know how to express ourselves.  Check out some of these great color combinations:

These colors are so sublime. Very orginal!

Best_Ribbon CuttingMix 1 part sunscreen with 1 part beach ball and 2 parts hot dogs.   Add one pair of giant scissors, and what do you have? The Glenlake Pool ribbon cutting ceremony of course.   The City of Decatur ordered up perfect weather for the re-opening ceremony this past Friday as City Commissioners Mary Alice Kemp and Kecia Cunningham cut the ribbon and welcomed the first guests into the newly renovated poolhouse.   So began the never-ending debate over who was the first to jump in the pool.  I heard more than a few children claim the title, but alas, the world may never know the truth.  Check out the great pictures below.

Remember that Glenlake Park remains closed for construction but parking is available on both sides of Church Street.  The new poolhouse and pool upgrades were funded by the City’s Capital Improvement Bond Program.  Look for the final touches to be added in the next few weeks.

Opening Day of Baseball

Young Players Enjoy Opening Day Parade

Young Players Enjoy Opening Day Parade

Nothing says “Summer’s Here” like the opening day of Little League baseball.  The traditional opening day parade kicked off the 2009 season this morning as the “shorter” versions of your favorite baseball teams, walked and rode through the Oakhurst business district between McKoy Park and Oakhurst Park in anticipation of the ceremonial “First Pitch” and their first games.    Good luck to all the young players and thanks to all of the volunteer coaches who make this program possible.

Local Musician Mike Killeen turns 30 this weekend and invites you to join him at his CD release party at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur. The new CD is entitled “Baby Be True”, features all new songs and was recorded live on May 9 at Full Moon Studios in Watkinsville, Ga.

Come one, come all to the Decatur Youth Baseball Opening Day Parade on Saturday, June 6.  The parade celebrates all T-Ball and League Baseball participants and begins at McKoy Park at 11 a.m.  The first pitch will be thrown out at Noon.

If you have a convertible and want to show it off – they will welcome you!  If you want to volunteer, they need you as well.  If you want to cheer the teams on, just show up with your enthusiasm and let the fun begin.

Call Stacy Green at 678-553-6549 or email her at stacy.green@decaturga.com if you have questions or want to volunteer.

As a newcomer to Decatur I have been nearly overwhelmed with all of the incredible food choices in the community.  Working from City Hall is both a blessing and a curse as I am tempted to “eat out” nearly every day.  From a culinary stand point I have no complaints, but all this food is making my wallet a bit thin so I have had to adjust.  These adjustments have led me on a mission to find meals that cost roughly $5.  I will be posting on a quasi-regular basis my findings and suggestions.

My first suggestion is the Basic Burrito at Raging Burrito.  The basic burrito is a steamed tortilla with choice of beans, rice, jack and cheddar cheese, and salsa fresca.  You can also add seasoned potatoes for no extra charge.  The cost is 4.95 plus tax.  I tend to get an glass of water to stay on budget.  As if the burrito wasn’t filling enough, if you go during lunch Monday through Friday you get a free basket of chips which come with salsa on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays and Chili con Queso on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

More to come.

People's Choice Award Winner

People's Choice Award Winner

The Decatur Arts Festival closed the Fine Arts Exhibition on Sunday with the “Last Call” event. Artists from the show were present to talk about their work and a variety of community members attended. Each year, a People’s Choice Award is given to a piece of art that is voted on by visitors throughout the run of the show. This year the award was given to Michael Klapthor for his sculpture “A Beast Submits”. If you missed the show, you are in luck as the piece will be on display at By Hand South for the month of June.

If you have never been to By Hand South on Ponce, you are in for a treat. They have a great selection of hand made art in a wide variety of media. I especially love the unique jewelry pieces. You may want to pick up a Father’s Day gift while you are there.

Weather

Did you know you can sign up to receive weather warnings directly to your phone?  Well, Decatur’s CodeRED Emergency Notification System offers this option to residents who chose to register.  When severe weather threatens, the system alerts only the residents in the areas affected.  The information is based on instant satellite feeds and other really cool technology that helps eliminate false alarms.  You can register here to receive Weather Warnings.

To further protect Decatur residents during severe weather, the City has received a Hazard Mitigation Grant in the amount of $108,510  from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide for the purchase and installation of four outdoor weather warning sirens.  This will ensure coverage for the entire city, with a siren in each quadrant.  The grant required a 15% match from the City and a 10% match from the State of Georgia.
