LIFELINE’S DEKALB OPERATIONS OFFERS FREE SPAY/NEUTERS

Decatur, GA – (January 14, 2014) — LifeLine Animal Project’s management has dramatically lowered the euthanasia rate at DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS).  However, the approaching warmer weather typically means skyrocketing intake levels at DCAS due to the high number of puppies and kittens being born.  Hoping to stem the number of animals coming in, LifeLine announces SNIP DeKalb (Spay Neuter Impact Program), which will provide free spay/neuters, along with free vaccinations, for DeKalb County pet owners needing financial assistance.

According to LifeLine’s DCAS Shelter Director Susan Feingold, spaying and neutering is critical in reducing the number of homeless and unwanted pets entering the shelter during warmer months.  “We see a staggering number of unwanted pets in DeKalb County, and the main reason is because people are not fixing their pets,” she says.  “By eliminating financial barriers and encouraging DeKalb County residents to get their pets fixed, we hope to see a drastic reduction in the number of dogs and cats entering our shelter.”

DeKalb residents who cannot afford to pay for low-cost spay or neuter services themselves should visit www.dekalbanimalservices.com, print and fill out the SNIP DeKalb application and then mail it in. Applications are also available at the DCAS shelter. When approved, applicants will receive a voucher for a free spay/neuter and instructions in the mail.

Amber Alert Awareness Day

Today is Amber Alert Awareness Day, marking the 18 year anniversary of the day Amber Hagerman was abducted while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and later found murdered. In April of 2003, in her honor, President Bush signed into law the PROTECT Act, which statutorily established the national AMBER Alert coordinator role. Since, the AMBER Alert™ program has been credited with more than 675 successful recoveries of missing or abducted children. The AMBER Alert Program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies and the wireless industry to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases.

In honor of this day, the City of Decatur is encouraging parents to create a Safety Profile for their household at www.smart911.com which can include current photos and physical descriptions of their children.  According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the first three hours are the most critical when trying to locate a missing child. When a child is reported missing it can take up to an hour or more to have a current photo distributed to law enforcement officers in the field. If the family has a Smart911 Safety Profile and dials 9-1-1, their child’s photo and description will be immediately available to call-takers and can be passed on to law enforcement officials in the field, launching a search in seconds or minutes as opposed to hours.

Smart911 allows citizens to create a free Safety Profile for their household with information they want 9-1-1 and emergency responders to have during an emergency. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call-taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information.

For more information about Smart911, contact Fire Chief Toni Washington at toni.washington@decaturga.com or 404-373-5092.

Changes for Permitting in the City of Decatur

Starting January 21, 2014, permitting services will take place in a new location at the renovated Public Works Facility, 2635 Talley Street.

The move takes place at the same time as the formation of a new one-stop shop for permitting that will make it easier for residents and applicants to access these services.  This one-stop shop is part of a larger reorganization and the creation of the new Design, Environment & Construction Division of Public Works.  The new Division will be home to permitting, inspections, engineering, streets, the storm water utility, and codes enforcement.

ARC Pop Up Open House

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is hosting a new style of informational gathering here in Decatur on Saturday, January 11 from 3 – 5 p.m.  They will transform the vacant storefront under Eddie’s Attic at 515 N. McDonough St. into a come-and-go community meeting.  The topic is the latest update to the $61 billion Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), metro Atlanta’s framework for mobility and prosperity.  ARC invites the community to come learn about transportation choices, ask questions and give them some critical input about how to make these kinds of important meetings more fun, informative and engaging.

The idea for this new style meeting stemmed from an overwhelming response to a community engagement survey last summer in which more than 2,000 people said they wanted more local, informal, innovative, fun and online options.  They chose Decatur as the test-run location and if it proves to be successful, ARC will replicate it during future outreach efforts all over the region.

They also promise refreshments and prizes!  Click here for more information.

trees square

Draft recommendations for a new tree ordinance were presented to the City Commission during a work session on January 6th.  Recent community concerns have brought an increased level of urgency to the subject, prompting city commissioners to pass a 90-day moratorium on tree removal in October, 2013.  Additionally, they fast-tracked the development of a new tree ordinance that would reflect current best management practices in the industry.

That effort has been underway with the assistance of  tree consultant, Connie Head of Technical Forestry Services, the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board, and engaged stakeholders who have provided their input to the process.

A recording of the presentation is available online at decaturga.com

The presentation documents are provided below, which accurately reflect the policy goals and operational structure of the proposed ordinance.  The ordinance draft is currently being revised to ensure consistency with these goals, and will be available shortly.  We apologize for the delay.
