asc event

There will be a very special worship service on September 28, 2014, to commemorate the historical relationship between Decatur Presbyterian Church (DPC) and Agnes Scott College (ASC).  This event will celebrate these two institutions with speakers providing past, present, and future perspectives on how the relationship between ASC and DPC has impacted their journey.  The Reverend Dr. Todd Speed, senior pastor at DPC, and the Reverend Kate Colussey-Estes, chaplain of ASC, will oversee a presentation of narratives and music by current students of ASC as well as former alums who participated in the Westminster Group at the college.

Please join ASC as they celebrate the impact of campus ministry at Agnes Scott College and learn about the exciting plans that Decatur Presbyterian Church has for deepening this connection as the church fulfills its mission, “Every child of God – belonging, engaging, being transformed”.  Sunday School meets at 9:15 am followed by a fellowship time on the lawn at 10:15 prior to the start of worship at 10:30 am at Decatur Presbyterian Church – 205 Sycamore Street
Decatur, GA 30030-3413

Alan and Lita Blake have toured and recorded with the late Grover Washington Jr., the late George Howard, Jean Carne, Kevin Eubanks, and Rachelle Ferrell. Lita studied under Dr. Donald Byrd at Howard University and performed with jazz pianist Billy Taylor and bassist Ron Carter during Settlement Music School events in Philadelphia.

Also, join Decatur Active Living and the City of Decatur as we celebrate Car Free Day at the concert.
Car Free Days aim to be fun, free events encouraging people to get out of their cars and run, walk, cycle or take public transit. The central vision of Car Free Day is urban mobility that is not dependent on the private automobile. International Car Free Day is celebrated every September 22 (Decatur celebrates on Wednesday) first started in Europe in the 1990s and is a growing global movement celebrated in over two thousand towns and cities in over thirty countries. CFD is not anti-car, but promotes awareness of alternative forms of transportation and the public health benefits of more active lifestyles within reach to us all.

The City of Decatur celebrates on Wednesday to be part of the Blue Sky Concert. Walk, bike or ride transit to the concert and receive a special Car Free Day sticker and/or tattoo! For more information contact cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com

The Decatur Police Department has joined the other departments of the City in adopting cloud computing.  The change in technology roughly coincides with the return of the police to the Beacon Municipal Center.

The technology changeover went smoothly with no disruptions to dispatching or other emergency services.  Based on consultations between VC3 (the City’s cloud and technology provider), the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Decatur Police Department, Decatur’s network remains compliant with criminal justice information services (CJIS) standards.

The cloud expansion demonstrates Decatur’s commitment to innovation and to providing employees with the most efficient tools for staff to work effectively.  Internal surveys indicate that 71 percent of City employees are somewhat or very satisfied with our cloud—they rate the best aspect of our cloud as the ability to “work from anywhere” whether at their desk or on-the-go from a mobile device.

Got Drugs?

This Saturday, September 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. drop by and turn in your unused or expired medication for safe disposal in front of the Decatur Police Department, located at 420 West Trinity Place, Decatur, GA 30030.

The goal of the DEA “Drug Take Back” program is to prevent pill abuse and theft by giving us the opportunity to turn in potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for disposal.

Police drug take back day 2014

Decatur last participated in the drug take back program in April 2014 and took in 150 pounds of prescription drugs.

Returning for its fourth year, the Madison Avenue Soap Box Derby is back again! Here’s a little bit about the event and the super cool group behind it…

Hello Neighbors! We would like to formally introduce you to the Madison Ave Community Fund! The Madison Ave Community Fund (MACF) is a non-profit organization started by us, your neighbors, to help us direct the funds raised from the Madison Ave Soapbox Derby and other future events. For those new to the neighborhood or who haven’t experienced the Madison Ave Soapbox Derby for some crazy reason, it is an amazing event started by a group of neighbors in 2011. We got together and came up with the zany idea of bringing together our families to have fun while raising money for a local charity benefiting the children of our community. Thanks to all the support of our awesome neighbors and neighborhood businesses, the event has grown from about 20 drivers in 2011 to 100 drivers in last year’s rain soaked derby. We are proud to announce that we have now donated over $30,000 to local children’s charities!

More information about the event and the organization can be found here on the website

UPDATE: Both work sessions will be live streamed and archived online here.

Want to learn more about the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO)? The City Commission has two work sessions, one tonight and one Wednesday, to go over everything it includes. The community is welcome to attend one or both work sessions and listen in, but please note that there will not be an opportunity for public comment at either of these meetings.

The work sessions are Monday, Sept. 22 and Wed., Sept. 24 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the City Commission Meeting Room, City Hall, 509 N McDonough St.
