It’s back and better than ever! Celebrate summer at the downtown Decatur Beach Party, this Friday, June 17, 2016 from 5 to 11 p.m.
No beach? No problem! Decatur makes its own with 60 tons of sand – transforming Ponce de Leon Avenue into Sandcastle Central. Add a kid’s boardwalk, live music and dancing on the plaza, a food court with funnel cakes and fruity drinks, and voilà — you’re in a beach town, Decatur-style, without the sunburn and hours of driving.
Tune into fantastic live jams – Tray Dahl & The Jugtime Ragband open for evening’s headliner, Electric Avenue. A DJ closes out the evening with a dance party.
Buy tickets at Freshtix.com.
Tickets are $12 in advance at and local Decatur retail shops or $15 at the gate.

We would like to thank Literacy Action staff and current ESL students for visiting us and touring the police department as part of course work focusing on government and community resources. Taking a tour of the police department gives you the opportunity to meet staff and see the various parts of the facility such as the 911 Center, patrol roll call room, evidence packaging, sallyport, holding cells, interview rooms, the courtroom and training room. Taking the tour also gives you the chance to learn about the various functions of police department staff and to ask questions.
If you have a community group or class that would like to take a tour of the police department, please contact Lt. Jennifer Ross.

Trees Atlanta plans to return on June 18 with its herd of sheep to help control Japanese hops, kudzu and other invasive plants on the steep slope between Section 14 and the creek at the Decatur Cemetery.
Trees Atlanta led the recent woodland restoration effort in the stream corridor on the east side of the Cemetery.
The sheep in this program are protected by a human shepherd and livestock guardian dogs, and the sites are surrounded by solar powered, low-voltage electrified fencing to keep the sheep safe and on-task while they are working. The work is expected to take 7 to 10 days at the Cemetery.
Trees Atlanta has used sheep to help eradicate invasive plants at Decatur Cemetery, the Atlanta Beltline, Chastain Park, Kirkwood Forest, Morningside Nature Preserve, Candler Park, Herbert Green Nature Preserve, Perkerson Park and other green spaces in metro Atlanta. The sheep are provided by Ewe-niversally Green, a local firm that specializes in environmentally sound conservation techniques.

DeKalb County assesses the values of all properties in the county and its cities. Per state law, counties are required to mail out assessment notices annually. DeKalb will mail out their assessment notices on June 3. The notice will advise you of your property value for 2016. Revenue Director, Russ Madison, encourages all property owners to pay extremely close attention to the figures and deadlines on the notice. The 2016 value will be the basis of your DeKalb County property tax bill in the fall and, for Decatur property owners, your 2nd installment tax bill for 2016.
For tips on reading your assessment notice, visit the Decatur Tax Blog http://decaturtax.blogspot.com/2016/06/dekalb-assessment-notices-to-be-sent.html.
