Budget Work Session Next Thursday

The Decatur City Commission will hold a work session on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to discuss challenges and opportunities in the FY16-17 proposed budget and FY15-16 revised budget.

The work session will be held in the City Commission Meeting Room at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street and is open to the public. The work session will also be available for viewing online at https://www.decaturga.com/city-government/city-commission/streaming-video.

Extreme Heat Preparedness

Summer is right around with the corner and with it comes hot temperatures and extreme heat. Extreme heat events occur when temperatures are substantially higher than average for a particular location at a given time of year. The impacts of extreme heat can cause widespread suffering and fatalities – there were more than 7,400 heat-related deaths in the U.S. between 1999 and 2010. That’s why the Federal Government is working to help state and local communities prepare for potential extreme heat events this summer.

Fortunately, the majority of heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable. If we take actions to prepare for and respond to extreme heat events, we can dramatically reduce the risks associated with extreme heat—especially for the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly and very young, people with certain health conditions, people like public works employees or construction workers who work outside, and people in low-income households. There are a number of resources that can help:

During Extreme Heat Week (May 23-27), Federal departments and agencies will take a number of actions to raise public awareness and prepare the nation for extreme heat. The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) is launching a new interagency portal at http://climate.gov/NIHHIS. The NIHHIS portal integrates heat-health information, case studies, and tools from across the Federal Government to support on-the-ground efforts to reduce heat-related impacts on human health.
The U.S. Global Change Research Program recently released The Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health in the United States: A Scientific Assessment. This report stated that by the end of the century, we can expect a decrease in premature cold-related deaths in the winter but an increase of thousands to tens of thousands of premature heat-related deaths each summer, based on present-day sensitivity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Excessive Heat Events Guidebook helps community officials, emergency managers, meteorologists, and others plan for and respond to excessive heat events. Available at http://www.epa.gov/heat-islands/excessive-heat-events-guidebook

With the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it – right on your mobile phone. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps keep families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist families with energy costs. Available at http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ocs/programs/liheap

Memorial Day Weekend at the Cemetery

May 26, 6:00 P.M. Place Flags On Graves- Meet at the Veteran’s Rock in the new cemetery (enter Church Street gate).

May 29, 6:00 P.M. Place Flowers On Graves- Meet at same location described above, Veteran’s Rock.

Monday, May 30, 5:00 P.M.- Brief Remembrance Ceremony. Afterwards we will pick up all flags and flowers from graves.

Bike Registration Tomorrow

The Decatur Police Department and Decatur Active Living will be hosting a bicycle registration for the “Bike to Work Day Commuter Breakfast” in front of the Decatur Recreation Center tomorrow, Friday, May 20, 2016 from 7am-10am.

Bicycles are a commonly stolen item and are not registered like vehicles. Bicycle registration includes bringing your bicycle, providing owner contact information, having the manufacturer and serial number documented and having a numbered decal applied to and a photo taken of your bicycle.

The process takes just a few minutes. Registering your bicycle allows officers to look up recovered bicycles and contact the owner and allows for us to quickly look up the needed information about your bicycle if it were to be stolen. The information is kept in a secured database only accessible by police department staff.

We will also register scooters that do not meet the size requirements for state tag registration. There is NO CHARGE to register your bicycle or scooter.

National Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15^th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This year’s National Police Week dates are Sunday, May 15, 2016 through Saturday, May 21, 2016.

National Police Week is a time to honor officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty but also a time to recognize the officers who serve the community day and night, weekends and holidays and quite often at the expense of spending time with their families.

Please feel free to post or email any words of thanks or support for me to share with your Decatur Police officers.
