JPA Summer 2016 Graduates
Congratulations to the 2016 Summer Junior Police Academy class that graduated last Friday. JPA Participants spent the week learning about policing, getting to know many of the officers, taking tours and having fun.
Family & Friends® CPR course
The JPA participants attended sessions on 911/Communications, Recruitment & Training, Weapons & Equipment, Use of Force, Traffic Safety & Enforcement, Drug Trends & Dangers, Criminal Investigations, Personal Safety & Crime Prevention and Physical Fitness. They also completed the Family & Friends® CPR course, conducted a traffic survey, completed 911 emergency call and crime scene practical exercises as well as toured the police department and the DeKalb County Jail.
Weapons & Equipment Session
We will host our next Junior Police Academy during the CSD Fall break. If you have an 11-14-year-old and are interested, please contact Lt. Jennifer Ross.

Good news! Decatur residents can continue to include glass in their curbside recycling services. Due to new rules set by recycling facilities, glass for recycling must be placed in a separate bin, that you provide. The bin should be 18 gal. or smaller, but any type or color is acceptable. Paper, plastics, and metal can still be mixed together and placed in a separate bin for collection. The annual sanitation fee for the new fiscal year increased from $250 to $275 to cover the cost for separated glass collection services. You will see an adjustment of $25 on your second property tax installment for this year.
Over the past few months, Decatur Public Works staff has explored recycling options and gathered feedback from the community. All options, including sending glass to the landfill, involved an increase in the cost for providing recycling. An online survey developed with the assistance of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board collected more than 630 responses on this issue. More than 90% of respondents indicated they were willing to pay an additional $25 to $35 per year to continue curbside glass recycling services. And more than 76% of the respondents were willing to provide their own bins for separating glass to be recycled.
Why do recycling facilities no longer want glass mixed in with other materials?
While a co-mingled recycling collection program provides many benefits, it has contributed to a system of poorly sorted recovered materials, with pieces of glass, plastic and metal being delivered in bales of fiber; the wrong types of fiber going to paper mills; and, plastics, glass, and other materials being delivered to incorrect product manufacturers.
Will the glass collected actually be recycled?
Yes. The glass collected from the separated residential curbside program will be sent to a recovery facility called Strategic Materials. They are a processor for recycled glass used in a wide array of products such as containers, fiberglass insulation, and countertops
I still have my old red glass-only recycling bin. Can I use that instead of getting a new bin?
Yes, we encourage you to use those bins if you have them. If you do not have a bin, you must provide your own separate bin to place at the curb on your regular collection day. The bin should be 18 gallons or smaller, but any type or color is acceptable.

CMES, Inc. will be correcting punch list items in Oakhurst Village for the next couple of weeks. These include replacement of damaged curbing, cracked sidewalks, ramps and similar improvements. On Friday, the parking lane on Oakview Road next to the Old Scottish Rite property will be milled and repaved.

The Fourth of July will be here before you know it. This year, gather the family and come out to Decatur’s 2016 Independence Day celebration. XFINITY is proud to be the presenting sponsor of this year’s event.

Astra Grading and Pipe will begin work during the week of June 20 on Phase 2 of the Downtown Decatur Storm Drainage Improvements. A plan of the new storm drainage system is included below.
As part of its efforts to eliminate flooding in and near downtown Decatur, the City of Decatur is making storm drainage improvements on East Trinity Place, East Howard Avenue, Barry Street and North Candler Street. The project will start in front of Decatur Fire Station No. 1 and includes the replacement of undersized and deteriorated storm drainage facilities on East Trinity Place, Barry Street, North Candler Street and across private properties in the area. All new storm drainage improvements will take place in City rights of way.
This project was originally planned almost 40 years ago and will reduce or eliminate frequent flooding on private properties on Barry Street, North Candler Street and East Howard Avenue. It completes the major planned improvements to the upper Peavine section of the downtown Decatur drainage system and replaces some of the oldest storm drainage infrastructure in metro Atlanta.
The work will be phased in 300 foot sections, with one lane closed while work is taking place in that section. The work will start with location of utilities, saw cutting pavement and establishing a temporary construction office and storage area at 250 East Trinity Place. Except when crossing intersections, two-way traffic and pedestrian access will generally be open during the entire job. The work is expected to take 9 to 12 months.

Crossing E. Trinity Place is temporarily restricted near E. Howard Avenue due to sidewalk improvements at the 245 E. Trinity Place “Arlo” construction site.
As many of you know, access across E. Trinity Place from the PATH trail HAS been maintained for nearly all of the construction period at this location. However, access is NOT available right now.
This is temporary. The construction is expected to end by July 1st and access across E. Trinity Place will be restored.
Pedestrians and cyclists should use the Agnes Scott Tunnel and Church Street as alternatives to the E. Howard Ave/E. Trinity Place intersection.
Be safe as we get closer to the end of construction at this location.
