Scott Peacock and Mayor Floyd at the Georgia Organics Conference

Scott Peacock and Mayor Floyd at the Georgia Organics Conference last week

Stay home Monday morning or, better yet,  schedule your DVR to record The Today Show because Decatur’s Watershed (superstar) chef, Scott Peacock, will be making his chicken and dumplings recipe for Matt Lauer and the gang on the morning of March 30.

I would be jealous of The Today Show cast for getting the chance to try his chicken and dumplings, but really I just feel sorry for them. Unlike us lucky Decaturites, Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira et al., don’t live anywhere near Watershed. That means their lives are devoid of Scott Peacock’s Tuesday night fried chicken dinners, Creamy Stone Ground Shrimp Grits and Butternut Squash Pancakes. It can’t be easy being a non-Decaturite.

Come out to The Grange this Saturday in honor of St. Patty’s Day. The city of Savannah might dye its river green, but Decatur has a pub owned by real Irish people! That’s right. For those of you who didn’t know, The Grange Public House is owned by the Comers who were born and raised in Ireland.

And the icing on the cake is that they’ve planned a full line up for this Saturday:

2:30pm – John Mohr MacKintosh Pipes & Drums http://www.jmmpd.com/
3pm – Buddy O’Reilly Band (traditional Irish) http://www.buddyoreilly.com/
5pm – The Killarney Boys of Pleasure (traditional Irish)
7pm – Sean Moran Family Affair Band (Contemporary)
8:15pm – Pipes & Drums (Special Guest)
8.45pm – DJ Danny Gresham

If you can’t make it Saturday – or even if you can, make sure to stop by on Tuesday, March 17 (on the actual St. Patrick’s Day) for some more great entertainment:

3pm – Traditional music with local Decatur musicians
6pm – Sean Moran Family Affair Band (Contemporary)
8pm – Traditional Irish Dance Group
8.30pm – The Guinness Girls with Guinness Giveaways
8.30 till late – DJ Danny Gresham

See you there!

The weather was great in Decatur this past weekend and crowds of people joined Bill and Amy at The Seen Gallery to celebrate their “Grand Re-opening” party. The gallery moved to Church Street in downtown Decatur next to Mingie World Arts and Java  Monkey. Several of the artists represented attended and seemed excited about the new space.

We received an email from Misti asking us to post her note below as a way of publically saying thank you.

Having lived here for 4 years now, I am keenly aware of what an amazing city Decatur is to live in, and that was proven to me again this Wednesday with a very simple and appreciated gesture by a local business.  Unfortunately I lost my job as an Operations Manager at a construction company last December.  Getting up every day to job search is challenging enough and with the constant bad news about the economy, it’s hard to stay positive.

Recently, I stumbled upon a tiny ad for a free haircut at Salon Red for discouraged individuals like me.  For a very proud person, making the call to take advantage of a free haircut was quite humbling for me.  Three months ago, I would have never imagined the value a haircut would have, as it has become a luxury I could do without.

I am grateful for the owner and staff at Salon Red for putting happiness into my week.  Salon Red truly exemplifies the Decatur community we all love, and I just wanted to say thanks and encourage my fellow neighbors to support such a giving Decatur business.  I can say with certainty that Salon Red has earned my business as soon as I am back to work.

What fun to walk around Decatur on such a beautiful morning. I was out checking out some more gift ideas for Valentine’s Day. I stopped in By Hand South and saw a lot items that would make great gifts. In addition to the great one of a kind handmade jewelry selection, By Hand South also has great gift items such as glassware, carved wood, metal and more.

Mingei has a lot of unique gifts as well. I bought myself a lovely pendant that states I am the “Queen of Everything”! How fun is that? I was tempted by the freshwater pearls, earrings and bracelets as well, but decided one gift for myself was enough.  Mingei has merchandise at all price points, so you are sure to find something that you cannot live without.

The Seventeen Steps has a nice selection of Valentine gifts. They always have great displays which makes it easy to locate the new items.

And because it is Valentine’s weekend I could not resist adding a photo of our Valentine Couple in front of the Old Courthouse.
Have a great weekend!

I love to shop and I love bargains, so Decatur is the place for me! Walking through Decatur, I have seen  many signs for sales and other items that I think would be perfect for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Whit’s End on Ponce de Leon has deeply discounted their winter items to make room for the new spring merchandise. And let’s face it, this warm weather in February will not last. This is a great opportunity to pick up something new and fresh to wear for the remaining cold weather, or to keep your loved one warm for Valentine’s weekend.

rockit-50-offRockit Boutique on the Square is having a 50% off Winter Merchandise Sale. I can’t wait to wear the new skirt I purchased. It will take me right into Spring! Of course I had to buy some hoop earrings to accessorize.

Boutique Karma on Church Street is also having a sale. Many items in the store are marked down 25 to 80%.  The Boutique has women’s bouti-karma-sign1clothing, shoes, accessories and more. Stop in for a look and I bet you will find an item or two that you want to take home.

Squash Blossom has a great window display wishing you “love” in many languages. I know many women who would love to receive a gift from here. The sign outside says they have received  new HOBO and Free People. Stop in and check it out.squash-blos-window

Both Squash Blossom and Kaleidoscope Boutique have a sale section in the back of the store so if you are looking for more bargains, head to the back. I know, it is hard to make it to the back when so many of the new fashions tempt you!

There are many more shops in Decatur, and if you know of any other sales, please let us know. We will be out and about this week searching for Valentine’s gifts for our loved ones.

Hope to see you around town.

Th new gastro pub, Leon’s, opened for a practice night for friends and family over the weekend. Owners Dave, Mike and Tom were on hand to greet everyone, and were in good spirits, as they should have been. They did a very nice interior renovation. The bar was very welcoming, as were all the servers and employees.

We enjoyed a variety of tasty appetizers, including french fries with various dips, a tasty salad and a carrot hummus dip with bread. The scallop entree that I had for dinner was especially good. Of course we had to try some dessert, and the cobbler and the waffles were definitely crowd pleasers.

Good atmosphere, good food…the Brick Store guys have done it again! Be sure to stop by and check it out. The Grand Opening is on Monday night.
