On Monday night, December 7, at 7:30 p.m., a year’s worth of effort will come to a close as representatives of Decatur’s Better Together process present the City Commission with a comprehensive draft of content for the Community Action Plan.

Over the past twelve months, the effort’s organizing committee has planned and then convened a broad community conversation around differences – in culture, race, age, abilities, politics, economic resources, and more.  Not just to explore the city’s diversity-related challenges but, more importantly, to collectively determine what we might do about them.

Get the full story and download the draft content here.

A message from DeKalb County’s Department of Watershed Management –

A temporary road closure to facilitate Sanitary Sewer System improvements on Superior Avenue is expected to begin on Monday, November 30th and weather permitting, will last approximately three (3) weeks.

Be advised that Superior Avenue between Scott Boulevard and Willow Lane will be closed to thru traffic. Access will also be limited to local traffic from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The County is alerting residents that detours will be in effect, and heavy equipment and construction noise may be noticeable. However, County crews will work diligently to minimize the duration of the construction period and road closure. Patience is appreciated while the improvements are made.

Please call the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) information line at 1-800-986-1108 with any questions or concerns.

What many believe to be the “official” holiday shopping season starts this Friday.  With Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday upon us, it is a good time to take a minute and review some safety and prevention tips.

Have a Safe & Happy Holidays! Sgt. Parks, Sgt. Bellis, Ofc. Santiago, Ofc. Kersey & Lt. Jackson.

While Out & About:

Be alert, aware and trust your instincts.  If a situation does not feel right, pull to another part of a parking lot or walk back into a store.
– Beware of “looking” unaware by talking/texting on your phone, digging in bags or sitting parked in your vehicle after arriving or before leaving.  Predators are looking for targets that seem to not be paying attention.
– Park in well-lit, populated areas.
– Place packages and bags out of view in your vehicle, either in the trunk or under a cargo shade.
– If you return to your vehicle to unload items with the intent to return shopping, move your vehicle.

Package Theft:

Have packages shipped to your office or work location or to the home of a friend or relative who is home during the day.
– Request that a signature be required to deliver the package.
– Use the services offered by various shipping companies that allow for tracking and rerouting packages.
– Track packages and ask a trusted neighbor to look out and take the packages in when they arrive.
– When traveling, make sure to ask a family member, friend or neighbor to check for packages at your home. You may have received a gift delivery you were not expecting.
– If you observe people you do not recognize on a neighbor’s property, pay attention and if it appears they are removing packages, call police immediately and provide a detailed description of the person and direction of travel and description of a vehicle if present.

While At Home:

Secure your home!  Make sure doors and windows are locked even when you are only taking a short walk, going to dinner or inside your home.
– If you have a burglar alarm, use it every time you leave and when your family is in for the evening.
– Acknowledge knocks on your door that you are not expecting by speaking through the door or a window.  It is a common tactic for burglars to knock to confirm nobody is home before they break-in.
– If you are headed out of town, ask a neighbor to park one of their cars in your driveway and submit an “Out of Town House Check” through the SeeClickFix App, online or by calling the police department non-emergency number at 404/373-6551.

Thank you Spencer Family!

We would like to thank the Spencer family for making and bringing lunch as a holiday treat for police department staff today.  We enjoyed pasta, salad, sandwiches, chili, cupcakes and cookies.  Thank you for thinking of us, feeding us and visiting.

Acting on Principle B from our 2010 Strategic Plan Decatur’s Better Together Initiative is a currently active effort to build deeper connection, understanding, and mutual respect among the Decatur community.

Through successive meetings, hundreds of Decatur neighbors have come to the table, engaged in face-to-face conversation, and developed a proposed list of steps – action items – that the city, non-profit partners, and even individuals can take forward to help preserve and foster diversity of all kinds.

Those action items are now available for your review and comment via Open City Hall.  Click here for all the details or go directly to the forum here.

In-person opportunities to review and comment can also be found at City Hall, the Decatur Rec, Ebster Recreation Center, and the Decatur Public Library.

Commenting ends Monday, November 30.
