Crossing guards helping FAVE students after school.

Crossing guards helping FAVE students after school.

Don’t forget that school starts back up in Decatur next Monday, August 4th. The lighter summer traffic will give way to more traffic in general to include school buses.  Please keep in mind we will also have many more young cyclists and pedestrians making their way to school.  Please slow down and pay extra attention and plan for a little extra commute time to prevent speeding through the school zones.

There will be an increased presence of Decatur officers in and around the school zones to remind everyone school is back in session.  Don’t forget that Westchester Elementary is now open with applicable school zones on Scott Boulevard.

Atlanta Public Schools will also start back Monday, August 4th  and DeKalb County Schools start back Monday, August 11th.  When traffic is backed up or stopped and your frustration level rises, just sit back and remember the excitement of the first day of school.  Then relax and do your part to make sure everyone gets to where they are going safely.

The City of Decatur has issued a film permit to 999 Productions, LLC for filming of a project titled TRIPLE NINE to take place in the 200 block of Kings Highway in the evening and overnight hours beginning today through Friday morning.

Stretches of Ansley Street and Kings Highway will also be used for filming some neighborhood driving shots. To safely accommodate filming, Decatur Police will be directing
traffic with stoppages lasting no longer than 3 minutes. Most of this work will be done in the evening and through the night until 8am on July 12.
The production company  realizes they are guests in the neighborhood and the cast and crew will treat it with the utmost respect. In general, there will be some noise due to special effects associated with filming such as bright lights and engine noises. Also, the city has given permission to have the street lights turned off during the filming. Additional officers will be present to keep the area safe and secure.

From the Decatur Police Department’s Jennifer Ross:

It is the time of year where I anxiously wait for October to arrive but we have many more weeks of “Hotlanta” temperatures ahead before my wish is granted so we wanted to send out a few hot weather reminders to help make sure those who are most vulnerable stay safe.

Never Leave Children, Seniors or Animals in Parked Vehicles. Nobody should be sitting in parked cars this time of year but children, seniors and animals are even more vulnerable. Just don’t do it.  Not even for a the few minutes it takes to run a quick errand. It does not take long for the temperature inside of a parked vehicle to become dangerous.  According to the National Weather Service, the inside of a vehicle can reach temperatures over 120 degrees in just 80 degree weather. I decided to check out the Decatur sun today and with the outside temperature at 87 degrees and a light rain shower, within just one hour the temperature inside of the car reached 106 degrees. While thankfully there has not been any incidents of children, seniors or pets left in vehicles with tragic outcomes in our community, we have responded to a few instances of children and pets in hot cars that were noticed and reported by concerned citizens before something tragic occurred.

Check On Your Senior Neighbors. This is a particularly dangerous time of year for seniors. Seniors worried about high electric bills too often forgo air conditioning which can lead to heat stroke or worse.  Please take a few minutes to check on senior neighbors and family members. Make sure they are drinking enough water and not staying in homes that are too hot for their health. Let them know about Georgia Power’s senior bill discount if they are at least 65 year of age and live on an income no more than $23,340.  They can also call 2-1-1 (United Way) to learn if there are any other financial aid programs that might help offset cooling costs.

Parking coming soon image 400The new downtown Decatur parking meters have arrived and they’re getting installed next week. The PALs (Parking Attendant Liaisons) will be walking around showing people how to use the new machines. As the new pay stations are installed, the old meters will be covered with a blue bag and a sticker that says “Pay at Pay Station.”

New Parking Meter Basics:

• The new solar-powered pay stations and single meters accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit or debit cards, as well as good old-fashioned nickels, dimes and quarters, and dollar coins too.

• Pay by cell accounts are also an option.

• “Pay Here” signs with directional arrows on each block will direct you to pay stations.

• You can pay for on-street parking at any of the pay stations regardless of location. All you need to do is remember your license tag number and enter it at the machine.

• A limited number of blocks continue to use single space meters but offer the same flexible payment options.

• The two hour parking limit still applies.

• If you need more than two hours, choose one of the many downtown parking decks identified with a “P” for a cost effective option.
