I know it seems like there is someone filming something in Decatur nearly every week. And although it isn’t quite every week, Decatur is still a hot spot for Hollywood. The main attractions to Decatur, and the state of Georgia in general, are the tax credits.  The state gives major tax credits to companies who produce films, television shows, and other forms of media here in our home state. But in return for tax credits, those companies bring lots of work to Georgia and add a real boost to our local economy. They hire local location scouts, local set and costume designers, local post-production companies, and give money to our local retailers, restaurants, and hotels.

We have had so many film and television shows filmed here recently that there is now an entire tourism industry based on projects filmed in Georgia. Check out this website that has created tours based on the various film genres filmed in and around Decatur.

The Decatur cemetery is a very popular location to film.

The site points out exactly where and when projects were filmed, and has lovely things to say about our beautiful City. It also notes where current projects are being filmed- do you think they have updated their website yet to mention that the television show, The Originals was here filming on Church Street just yesterday?!

A classic New Orleans funeral procession was being filmed on Church Street. This was the view from my office window!

Do you love mornings and wake up early just looking for something to do?

We need two or three teams of folks willing to help us put up the “Burma Shave” signs along the Publix Marathon route through the City of Decatur. All you need is a vehicle large enough to hold some signs and a love of getting up at the crack of dawn. The marathon is Sunday, March 23rd and we start putting out signs at 5:30 a.m. We’ll even buy you breakfast when we are done and we dedicate this Burma Shave Rhythm to you:

Morning people are very jolly

Even at 5:30 a.m. they’re smiling by golly

Setting out signs before the sun’s up

Is exactly the thing that makes them jump!

Decatur!

Each year, the Publix Georgia Marathon runs right through downtown Decatur. This event brings thousands of runners ( and probably new visitors) though our great City. We do our best to welcome them with cheering crowds, upbeat music, and fun noisemakers and signs. We want everyone who runs through Decatur to come back and visit us,so we need to make a lasting impression.

So what can you do to help?  Call some friends and neighbors and plan to join us along the race route. The runners enter our city limits around 8:30am so come on out and make some noise! We will be there with plenty of noisemakers, pom-poms, and doughnuts to share. Join a group in front of Felini’s , the Old Courthouse, or near the Eastlake Marta Station.

As part of phase two of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), we’ll be holding a series of subject-specific interactive meetings during March and April. This first meeting is Wednesday, March 12, from 7-9 p.m. at Decatur City Hall. We’ll be discussing community character – the look and feel of Decatur’s neighborhoods – and considering what, if anything, we should do to better protect or enhance it.

Visit DecaturNext.com for more details about the meeting and to leave your thoughts, ideas or concerns about the topic.

For a complete schedule of the community meetings, click here.

Please make time to join us.
