Meet Leonard

Leonard on the Square

Leonard on the Square

As you wander through the Old Courthouse Square, you may notice  Leonard, the gentleman who keeps the square clean.

Leonard works hard and takes pride in keeping the downtown area clean. You will see him riding in his specially outfitted golf cart, or you may see him with the mini-sweeper keeping the streets and sidewalks in tip-top shape.

It is workers like Leonard that make Decatur such a great city in which to live, work and play.

Next time you see Leonard, be sure to say hello!

The 7th Annual Decatur Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008 from 1 until 4 p.m. on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur.  There will be over 350 wines for tasting and lots of food samples from local Decatur restaurants.  Musical performances will be by Ernie Quarles and Shaun Anderson beginning at 1pm and the Heaven Davis Band at 2:30pm.

Tickets are $30 and are available online at www.ticketealternative.com or drop by Decatur CD, which is a Ticket Alternative outlet.  Decatur Package Store on Clairemont Avenue also has a limited number of tickets, so stop by and say hello to Herb, who is a major part of planning this great event.

The price includes a commemorative wine glass.   No tickets will be sold at the gate and admission is limited to 2000 people.  The event is rain or shine, but we all know that the weather will be wonderful: a cool breeze and sunny! No one under 21 will be admitted ( yes this means babies as well) and pets need to stay at home.  The Wine Festival is a  fundraiser for  the Decatur Arts Alliance which offers the annual Decatur Arts Festival and the Oakhurst Arts and Music Festival free to the community.  Get your tickets now before it is too late! I look forward to seeing you there.

For more information call 404-371-9583 or www.decaturartsalliance.org.

The Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival was held last SAturday in the City. The weather was great and the attendees all seemed to have a grand time. I have included some photos from the set up in the morning with some of our great volunteers, as well as photos taken by Bill Mahan, our “professional” photographer. As you may know, the GDBTF benefits local non-profits and community groups within the City of Decatur.

For those of you missed out on festival tickets, you may want to go ahead and order your Wine Festival tickets at www.decaturwinefestival.com.

The Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival has the word music in the title for a reason- the music is awesome! The bands donate their time and talents for the community. As promised, here are some photos from the musical line up. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take any photos before noon, so I missed a couple of them. Our friend and event photographer Bill Mahan shared some of his with me as well. I would like to mention that The Stephen Wood Ensemble, Sue Witty and Olde Dog also performed. When I get some photos of them, I will be sure to add them.

We are busy getting ready for the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival tomorrow and thought you might like to see some of the preparations. We were over there this morning marking off the artist spaces and caught some of our contractors in action. Classic Tents and Events is one of our “friends” who we rent staging, tables and chairs from. Ed is our self-titled “Favorite Tent Guy” –  we love working with him and he is indeed our favorite. Here are some of the workers putting up the music stage.

PitStop supplies our portolets and we love working with them as well. Portolets may not bring up the best images in people’s minds, but PitStop does a great job with customer service as well as delivering clean unists. The owners, Terri and Jeff Wigley, are former IBM employees and have applied what they learned at IBM to running a very professional company. I caught one of their employees checking the units after he delivered them. Now you have a little peek into behind the scenes at one of our events! See you tomorrow at Harmony Park.

I am looking forward to attending the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival this weekend, held in Harmony Park. I really enjoy the community feel of this festival, as well as the opportunity to buy art and especially jewelry from some local artists. Ann Finley is one of my favorite jewelry artists and she will be there with her new creations in enamel. Erin Smith is another local favorite. Erin is the wife of Fred Smith, owner of Mojo Pizza in Oakhurst. Speaking of food, I also enjoy sitting outside one of the many restuarants around Harmony Park and having a “yummy” lunch or dinner.

The festival begins at 10am and lasts until 7pm. If you are an early bird, be sure to come at 8am for the Oakhurst 5K Arts Run which begins in front of One Step At A Time. Musical entertainment is ongoing and wraps up with a concert by Heaven Davis Band from 5 until 7pm. Free children’s activities begin at 10am and the parade is at 2pm.

I hope you can join me and the community at this great fall family event. See you at Harmony Park!
