The Hunt Begins!!

The Hunt Begins!!

The annual Decatur Business Association Easter Egg Hunt was held Saturday during the great spring weather that graced us. Thanks to the co-chairs of the event, Kathleen and Ron Everett, for all of their hard work leading to the success of the event.

Thanks to the City of Decatur Fire Department for escorting the bunny to the Square in the mini- fire truck. The children enjoyed climbing on the truck and ringing the bell!

Firefighter Tracey Collins shows the children how to ring the bell.

The official ING Cheering Station for Decatur was at Fellini’s and the addition of part of the Marching Abominables definitely helped rock the cheering section and the runners. Thanks to everyone who came out to help cheer on the runners in the 3rd annual ING Georgia Marathon.

Happy Volunteers at the Hydration Station
Happy Volunteers at the Hydration Station

I hear that Hydration Station #13 was rocking as well, with the addition of music and lots of cheerful volunteers. Thanks to Michael Harbin and his group for getting up early with a lot of enthusiasm and Laura Moore and her volunteers who staffed Hydration Station #11. Thanks to everyone who lined the streets and welcomed the runners to our wonderful city.

I received an email from a gentleman in Kennesaw this morning who was so impressed with our city that he is going to bring his wife back here to shop and dine. He also mentioned that he was running with a woman who had run in Boston, and was more than impressed with Decatur.  Way to go eveyone- this is why we have such a great city- we have great folks living and working here.
I should know later in the week if we won for best cheering, so check back for updates.
Thanks also to everyone who works for the City of Decatur for pitching in to make the marathon safe and fun.

group-shot-1David Fisher, Facilities Management Director for DeKalb County, was awarded the Thomas O. Davis Award at last night’s Decatur Business Association meeting.

The DBA presents the Thomas O. Davis Public Servant Award every year to a Decatur public servant who exemplifies the finest qualities of citizenship. This award was established in 2001 in memory of Thomas O. Davis, Decatur’s city attorney from 1968 until his death in 2000.

The DBA meeting was held at Eddie’s Attic. Mr. Fisher, after receiving the award, joked that he has always wanted to play on stage at Eddie’s, and he walked behind the piano and played a few bars. “Now I can tell my friends I have played at Eddie’s!” he remarked.

The ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur on Sunday morning, March 29 and we would love to have you participate! As the marathon organizers say “Volunteers are the heart and SOLE of the marathon”.

Thanks to everyone who has already volunteered to staff a hydration station. We are still in need of volunteers for the East Lake MARTA Station . Volunteers will have a lot of fun handing out water to the runners and cheering them on. To volunteer, go to www.inggeorgiamarathon.com and click on the volunteer link. Choose  Hydration Station #11 – Oakhurst. The password is COD.

Most importantly, Decaturites are needed to come to the official cheering station at Fellini’s Pizza on Commerce Drive on Sunday morning at 7 am to help cheer the runners on. In 2007, the City of Decatur won $10,000 for the Best Cheering Station and in 2008 we won $5,000 for the second best station. We want to reclaim our #1 title, so wear your orange and bring a noise maker, signage, and/or a musical instrument.  Let’s make noise so the runners remember our city. I will bring some cowbells to share!

Runners are going to vote for their favorite Hydration Stations and their favorite Cheering Section so we want them to remember us! Prize money will to the Decatur Youth Fund for children obesity programs.

For more information on the marathon, contact Cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com or 678-553-6573.

leeland-booksDon’t get too excited, it is not a new bookstore in Decatur, Leeland Books is part of the set of the filming of Halloween 2. The inside shots will be at the Wordsmith’s Books location and exterior shots will be in front of Leeland Books. I am quite impressed with the amount of detail put into the store front.

For those of us who thought Hollywood was glamorous, I have been persuaded otherwise after seeing the amount of work the crew has put into the filming of this scene.  They have been working all hours of the day and night to get ready. It reminds me of getting prepared for a special event.

The crew will be moving to the Decatur Cemetery for some night shots this evening. They have made a donation to the Friends of the Cemetery to help to restore the old section of the cemetery. This filming does benefit our city in many ways!

abc-pilot-1

You may have noticed the tents and other equipment around the Old Courthouse on the Square today. A crew from FTP Productions is filming a pilot for ABC; “The Untitled Daniel Cerone Project”. According to www.hollywoodreporter.com,

“The Cerone project, from ABC Studios, centers on a low-level detective (Jimmy Wolk) whose genius 11-year-old brother (Goyo) helps him solve crimes. “

Halloween 2 ( H2 ) will be filming at the Wordsmith’s location tomorrow and in the cemetery tomorrow night.  Maybe there will be a Malcolm McDowell sighting; let me know if you see him!

A little bit of Hollywood in Decatur!
