The Decatur Arts Alliance is making great use of the window space left behind when By Hand South owner Brenda Leder retired. The window has become “Decatur Street Gallery” showcasing the work of local artist Gail Vogels. Glad to see that this wonderful window has become part of the street scene on Ponce.

Artists interested in an opportunity to have their work displayed should contact Executive Director Angie Macon at 404-371-9583.  Kudos to the Arts Alliance for their efforts to support local artists! Consider joining the organization and getting involved.

Decorate Decatur is coming soon and the judges are looking forward to seeing Decatur’s Holiday Spirit. The anonymous judges will drive  the four square miles of the City of Decatur on Sunday, December 20 from 7 until 9 pm and decide upon the 2009 winner of the coveted Commissioner’s Cup. The winner has the priviledge of displaying the cup in their home for one year as well as having their name engraved on it.  Last year’s winner Ron Russell is pictured below. As you can see, he did not want to give the cup back!

In addition to the Commissioner’s Cup awarded to one lucky homeowner, several homes and businesses will be declared “winners” and a sign will appear in their yard on Monday, December 21st.

If you have a favorite decorated home or business that you would like the judges to consider, please call 678-553-6573 and leave the address.

There are no rules or regulations for the contest- so start decorating and may the best decor win!

Daylight View of the Downtown Christmas Tree

Wow- last night’s Terrific Thursday was extra terrific! Santa and his “entourage” were out and about visiting the shops around the square and will be visiting the rest of downtown Decatur’s shops in weeks to come. We were thrilled to be visited by carolers from Agnes Scott College – they stopped to have a picture made with Santa too.

The tree lighting on the Square brought hundreds of folks to downtown Decatur Thanks so much to Krista of Little Shop of Stories for getting the tree and making this event happen. Check out her blog  to find out where the tree came from. Cute story and pictures.

Hope to see lots of folks out tonight for the Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes. I wish I had Santa to hang out with again tonight, but he is busy making toys for good little boys and girls. I asked for a new BMW, but he said it was too big for my stocking. Guess I need a bigger stocking!

Sometimes people get ideas and realize they take more work than they anticipated. Other times these idea people make them happen. That’s the result in the case of the the new Decatur Christmas Tree! Krista Gilliam, who works at The Little Shop of Stories, envisioned a tree lighting in downtown Decatur and brought that vision to reality. Krista asked their landlord for permission to place a tree on top of the “Shop”, collected money and support from the businesses, ordered the tree, hired the company to install it, got lights ………you get the picture. Now Decatur will have a “Tree Lighting”!

The “Tree Lighting” will be held on Thursday, December 3rd from 7 until 8 pm. The Glennwood Choral Group will be entertaining with carols, and “sweet treats” will be provided. The tree will be lit at approximately 7:15 pm. Join the community on East Court Square as we gather for the lighting. Then stay in downtown Decatur for some holiday shopping and dining. Remember- it is one of the last three Terrific Thursdays, so a great opportunity to get in some holiday shopping while supporting our local businesses.

terrific thursday sign in window

Look for this sign in the window of participating Decatur businesses.

Terrific Thursdays continue tonight in Decatur! Not only can you find bargains and refreshments while shopping locally, but you can enjoy the new lights around the Square while riding the Pedicab. Wow- was there enough information in that sentence?

Seriously, tonight (and every Thursday through December 17) is the night you will want to shop Decatur. Businesses and restaurants are staying open late and offering discounts or refreshments, or both. We have also hired the Pedicab to transport you and your packages from place to place. Look for their lights and “Free Rides” signs.
