“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you …. when you’re laughing, the sun comes shining through!” the song says.  On World Laughter Day you can laugh with the whole world, especially your friends and neighbors in Decatur.  This will be the 4th year that the Decatur Bandstand has been the site of a World Laughter celebration from 2:00-3:00 on the 1st Sunday in May.

Jean Woodall Leads Laughter Day in 2009

Jean Woodall, a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, will host the event along with a few other Laughter cheerleaders.  We could all use more laughter these days, and there are no yoga poses when you join in  the merriment.  It’s good for what ails you and it’s free.  Bring your kids and your silly bone and laugh more in one hour than you did all last year.

Laughter Yoga started in India, but it’s so contagious that the laughter epidemic has spread around the world.  If you have questions, call Jean at 404-378-1673.  If you want to read more about World Laughter Day visit www.laughteryoga.org.

New Tree Owner, Gary Garrett

Commissioner Patti Garrett

Gary Garrett, who is on the Decatur Sustainability Board, and his wife Commissioner Patti Garrett celebrated Earth Day by planting a tree in their yard. After purchasing the tree at a silent auction, they thought the biggest challange was going to be digging the huge hole until they were asked how they were getting it home. Luckily, delivery of the tree was an option.

How did you celebrate Earth Day?

Today is the official Earth Day which was first established in 1970. The City of Decatur celebrated Earth Day this past Saturday at the Oakhurst Community Garden and hundreds of families came out for the day. The event began with an “earth friendly” parade- no gas powered vehicles were allowed. The City brought out two of it’s electric vehicles, the ubiquitous mini-fire engine and the new PALS electric van.

Mayor Floyd & Commissioner Patti Garrett Lead the Parade

Many families and other groups showed up for the parade and their parade “finery” was all eco-friendly as well.

Once the parade reached the Community Garden, there was a plethora of activities as well as music and some of Decatur’s environmental groups. Children participated in crafts such as face painting, making necklaces out of wood and more. There were even opportunities to get close to birds of prey such as this beautiful owl:

Plants at the Garden

If you have not yet completed your spring planting, be sure to stop by the garden and get some of their wonderful plants. I couldn’t leave the event without bringing some home for my yard. You may want to make that one of your Earth Day activities!

Hope everyone enjoys today and thinks of at least one way that you can become more eco-friendly in your daily activities. It might mean you walk or bike to school or work, give up plastic water bottles, take your lunch to school or work in reusable containers, or bring your own tote bags when grocery shopping. Have a great Earth Day!

The City of Decatur Police Department has some new faces; we have two new Police Officers and a new Communications Officer.

Officer John Bender

Officer John Bender comes to Decatur after working for DeKalb County Parks and Recreation where he was a center director. Responsibilities included organizing and running activities for members of the community ranging in ages from 3 years to Senior Citizens.  He attended Tucker High School and then went on to North Georgia College and Georgia Perimeter College. Officer Bender dreamed of working in law enforcement when he was a child. He feels that everyone can make a difference and the best way for him to make one was by helping others in need.

Officer Matthew Damico

Officer Matthew Damico is a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans where he earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology. After working in the mental health field and private security industry, Officer Damico fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Police Officer. Officer Damico is a proud husband and father of an energetic little boy with a second child due in the fall. He is excited and proud to serve the Decatur community.

Lynette Hardmon

Lynette Hardmon is a Decatur native whose parents attended Decatur High School and both grandmothers still reside in Decatur. Lynette has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and is currently working on her Masters of Science in the same field. After a summer internship with the Fort Valley Police Department, she experienced various aspects of policing including routine patrol, investigations, court and social work but found communications to be the best match. Officer Hardmon joined the City of Decatur Police Department as a Communications Officer about eight months ago and looks forward to coming to work each day.

Folks Lined Up and Ready to "Hunt"

Saturday’s Mad Dash, uh… I mean the Easter Egg Hunt on the Square, brought in record crowds. Everyone seemed to have a great time collecting easter candy and having photos taken with the Easter Bunny. Attendees also enjoyed climbing on the mini-fire engine and turning on the siren. Thanks to the Decatur Business Association and co-chiars Ron & Kathleen Everett for making this event a success. If you happened to miss it, check out this short film:
