Kelly from Renewal has sent in the following information. Congratulations to Renewal!

Decatur’s Historic Preservation Commission presented the annual Decatur Design Awards on May 3rd at the Old Decatur Courthouse. These awards recognize projects that preserve, enhance and contribute to the historic character of the City. Recipients were given a certificate signed by Mayor Bill Floyd, as well as an honorary plaque.  Renewal Design-Build received an award for Best Addition.

The judging commissioners thought the scale of the winning project – a major two story addition – was very compatible to the adjacent properties, and that incorporating sustainable materials also added a great deal of value. According to Regina Brewer, the awards’ organizer, “They also felt you could discern that the addition was new, and that it did not create a false sense of history.”

Once a small home in disrepair, this completely remodeled home is now a Tudor style cottage with double the square footage. And, the homeowner of the winning project couldn’t be more pleased. “My home is beautiful; it’s my dream come true,” says Dr. Dallin Randolph.

The Renewal team is humbled by such an award. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the City to whom we owe so much of our success,” says Renewal CEO, Peter Michelson. “Our goal is to continually contribute to the beauty and character of Decatur.”

Renewal Design-Build, 124 S. Columbia Dr., Decatur, is an award-winning firm providing complete solutions for renovations, additions, kitchens, baths, small projects and repairs.  For information, call 404.378.6962, or visit www.RenewalDesignBuild.com.

The annual Earth Day Festival in Harmony Park was held this past Saturday and enjoyed by everyone attending. The weather was great as was the music. The Morgan Rowe Band played from opening until 1:30pm and rocked the crowd. People danced and spread out blankets to listen to the music.

Then there was the parade! Greg White led the parade and was followed by the Seed & Feed Band aka The Marching Abominables. They were in great “earth day” costumes and definitely entertained the onlookers.

Children attending enjoyed making newspaper hats, masks and pipe cleaner glasses, courtesy of Decatur’s Children and Youth Services. They also had the opportunity to plant a flower to take home, thanks to Ace Intown Hardware and the Oakhurst Community Garden.

The music ended with the wonderful sounds of 10 year old Sidney Rhame’s band, The Lockouts. The oldest member of the band is 16 and I bet these young ladies will go far. Sindey is not only a good guitar player, but a songwriter as well.  I would bet that their future is very bright!

California Flag Flies on Old Courthouse!

California Flag Flies on Old Courthouse!

The Lifetime TV show, “Drop Dead Diva” is currently filming their first episode at the Old Courthouse on the Square in downtown Decatur. The crew first visited Decatur last September and filmed the pilot. The creators were happy to have the show picked up by Lifetime, and are filming episode one this week, and plan to return the end of the month to film part of episode two.

According to www.variety.com the show “revolves around a vapid wannabe model who suddenly dies and finds her soul entering the body of a brilliant, overweight, attorney”. The role is played by Broadway star, Brooke Elliot. As you can tell from the state flag flying above the Old Courthouse, the show is set in California.

Filming will continue on Friday, with some early morning scenes being shot outside on the Square. The Location Manager, Mitch Harbison,  is excited to be shooting in Decatur. On a recent walk around the Square with Mitch and his assistant James, they both gushed about Decatur. Their biggest compliment: “The people here are so nice and so friendly”. They plan on doing future filming in our wonderful little city.
