Tony Parker, Assistant City Manager for Emergency Management, reports that Atlanta Gas Light has 40 crew members working to turn off gas in all homes and businesses affected by the gas outage. Assuring that gas has been turned off at each location is an important safety measure to prevent buildings from filling with gas when gas service is restored. Atlanta Gas Light expects to have this work completed by noon today and can then make the repairs necessary to the piping system and restore gas service to the area. Once gas service is restored, Atlanta Gas Light crews must go to each individual home and business to turn on individual service and make certain that pilot lights and other gas appliances are working properly. This service can only be performed by Atlanta Gas Light personnel and is done to assure the safety of all gas customers. Atlanta Gas Light reports that repairs will be finished later this afternoon and that crews will be dispatched beginning around 4 p.m. to start turning on individual gas service. However, they believe it could take between 24 and 48 hours to visit each of the 1700 customers that have been impacted. David Fisher, Facilities Management Director for DeKalb County, was awarded the Thomas O. Davis Award at last night’s Decatur Business Association meeting.
The DBA presents the Thomas O. Davis Public Servant Award every year to a Decatur public servant who exemplifies the finest qualities of citizenship. This award was established in 2001 in memory of Thomas O. Davis, Decatur’s city attorney from 1968 until his death in 2000.
The DBA meeting was held at Eddie’s Attic. Mr. Fisher, after receiving the award, joked that he has always wanted to play on stage at Eddie’s, and he walked behind the piano and played a few bars. “Now I can tell my friends I have played at Eddie’s!” he remarked.

Many of you know the city’s volunteer coordinator, Lee Ann Harvey. But most of you probably aren’t aware that she’s a huge American history buff. She even has a This Day in History calendar on her desk. And thanks to this wonderful fact-filled calendar, Lee Ann brought the following to our attention today:

March 22, 1820: Naval Hero Killed in Duel
Stephen Decatur, a hero of the War of 1812, was killed in a duel on this day in 1820. Decatur faced off against James Barron, a naval officer suspended during a trial in which Decatur participated. Despite the tragic duel, Barron was permitted to rejoin the Navy at a lesser rank in 1821.
For those of you who haven’t recently brushed up on your Decatur history, this city was named after Commodore Stephen Decatur. In addition to his famous duel, he was a naval hero of the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812.

The City of Decatur, Agnes Scott College, City Schools of Decatur, Decatur Business Association, Georgia Organics, and Oakhurst Community Garden have come together to form the Decatur Agriculture Initiative (DAI) designed to bring together community partners around the issue of growing food locally.
The first step is the creation of a Master Plan that identifies and coordinates existing community-based efforts into one unified plan. This comprehensive approach should result in providing a variety of agricultural products, including food, which would be available through local producers and markets.
Examples of some possible outcomes might include: stronger community support for farmers markets, co-operative purchase of environmentally sensitive products, education programs designed for children and youth to be able to plan and support their own gardens, and more.
The possibilities are exciting and all of the partners are looking forward to collaborating on this brand new DAI in Decatur.

The ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur on Sunday morning, March 29 and we would love to have you participate! As the marathon organizers say “Volunteers are the heart and SOLE of the marathon”.
Thanks to everyone who has already volunteered to staff a hydration station. We are still in need of volunteers for the East Lake MARTA Station . Volunteers will have a lot of fun handing out water to the runners and cheering them on. To volunteer, go to www.inggeorgiamarathon.com and click on the volunteer link. Choose Hydration Station #11 – Oakhurst. The password is COD.
Most importantly, Decaturites are needed to come to the official cheering station at Fellini’s Pizza on Commerce Drive on Sunday morning at 7 am to help cheer the runners on. In 2007, the City of Decatur won $10,000 for the Best Cheering Station and in 2008 we won $5,000 for the second best station. We want to reclaim our #1 title, so wear your orange and bring a noise maker, signage, and/or a musical instrument. Let’s make noise so the runners remember our city. I will bring some cowbells to share!
Runners are going to vote for their favorite Hydration Stations and their favorite Cheering Section so we want them to remember us! Prize money will to the Decatur Youth Fund for children obesity programs.

Sgt. Woodruff, Sgt. Canipe, Lt. Hensel, Sgt. Ross, Sgt. Karolyi
On Friday, March 20, the City of Decatur Police Department held a promotion ceremony for five officers: Lieutenant Mark Hensel, Sergeant Jennifer Ross, Sergeant Dana Canipe, Sergeant Tim Karolyi and Sergeant William “Billy” Woodruff. The ceremony began with some encouraging words from Chief Mike Booker and a welcome from Deputy Police Chief Keith Lee. Mayor Floyd was on hand to conduct the swearing in.

It was a very nice ceremony and fun to meet the families of our fine officers. Our officers work very hard keeping our city safe and we are proud of all of them.

The weather is suppose to be beautiful this weekend. So while you’re out enjoying the weather, I would recommend:

The city recently contracted with Keystone Preservation Associates and Morrison Design LLC to inventory all of Decatur’s historic buildings and sites. What are they looking for? Old buildings! How old? 50 years and older. Wait, I think that’s the criteria to belong to AARP. Too bad we can’t get hotel and insurance discounts for owning old buildings.
So, what’s old in Decatur?
Okay, maybe not THAT old!
Ah, much better. A good example of a typical Decatur Bungalow built between 1910-1930.

Major renovations will begin on Glenlake Park during the week of March 23rd. This is the first comprehensive improvement to Glenlake Park in over 50 years. Work should be completed by the end of this year and will include new walking trails, pedestrian bridges, improved athletic fields, a new multi-purpose pavilion and an expanded dog park. Streambed restoration will improve water quality reduce downstream flooding and allow the stream to become an integral part of the park experience. A new bathhouse is currently underway and should be completed in time for the pool to reopen this Memorial Day.
To provide an alternative parking option for patrons of Glenlake Tennis Center and Glenlake Pool, we will close one lane of travel in each direction on Church Street beginning the week of March 23rd and create on-street parking for park patrons. This alteration of Church Street will be maintained throughout park construction. We don’t anticipate any major traffic problems as a result of this reconfiguration but there is a possibility that traffic on Church Street will be slowed, particularly during morning and afternoon rush hours and wanted to give you and your associates time to prepare for this change.

Film crew outside of Wordsmith's
It has been fun watching all of the “goings on” while the crew prepared for the filming of Halloween 2 (H2). There have been some Rob Zombie and Malcolm McDowell sightings, but I didn’t get a chance to see either of them. The extras have been lined up waiting to be a part of the crowd at Wordsmith’s for the fictional book signing. I saw a couple of my friends lined up and they seemed to be having fun being a part of the filming.
After all the work to make Leeland Books look great, they decided to use the outside of Wordsmith’s for the exterior shots. I have learned that a lot of decisions have to be made last minute in the film industry.
