Children gather to hear Douglas Brake

Children gather to hear Douglas Brake

Today was the last Blue Sky Concert for the month of May and I believe every child in Decatur was in attendance! Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band entertained with a variety of children songs, and even the adults were dancing. Maybe it was the break in the rain, or the fact that school is almost out, but it was very well attended and FUN!

The Blue Sky Concerts are produced by the Decatur Business Association concert signand sponsored by SunTrust Bank and were co-sponsored this month by Little Shop of Stories and Montessori School at Emory. The concerts are run by a volunteer committee that staffs each concert, books the bands, and get the prizes that are given away at the intermission.

If you missed today’s concert, Douglas will be playing at the Decatur Beach Party on the new “Ponce Fun Pier” from 6 until 9 pm.

If many of you are like me and are sad to see the Decatur Arts Festival come and go so quickly (anyone else going through Pete the Cat withdrawal?), don’t worry! Mingei has us covered for next weekend. The store is hosting a trunk show with handmade jewelry by the Herndon Heald collective.

Herndon Heald creations are completely handcrafted – everything from the clasps to the jump rings are handmade. They’ve been featured in Lucky Magazine and the Sundance Catalog.

This Saturday will be the collective’s first trunk show in the southeast. So stop by Mingei World Arts on Saturday, May 30 from noon to 5 p.m. for a glass of wine, try on some Herndon Heald artwork and keep the spirit of the Decatur Arts Festival alive. Summer has official begun!

Good Day Atlanta stopped by The Seen Gallery this morning to film two live segments about the Decatur Arts Festival. Cheryl did a great job introducing everyone.

Arts Festival artists Ann Finley, Kimberly Dean, and James Dean (creator of Pete the Cat) showed off their work that will be available Saturday and Sunday during the Artists Market.

Thank you to Bill and Amy at The Seen Gallery for waking up extra early and letting us into the gallery.

Even with the dreary weather, the Active Living department had a great turn-out for it’s Annual Keenagers Picnic today. The AL staff whipped up some amazing picnic grub and the keenagers showed off how they stay active with African dancing, aerobics and square dancing.

The kids of Animal Crackers (Clairemont, Oakhurst, Winnona Park, and Decatur Rec), the STAR program at Decatur Housing Authority and Whiz Kids (Glennwood) created some fantastic greeting cards featuring their murals representative of their year-long focus on “Global Communities.”

The greeting card pictured above was done by the Decatur Rec Animal Crackers to represent what they have learned about North America.

The cards are being sold as a fundraiser for the Decatur Youth Fund, which offers scholarships for Decatur children to attend summer camps and after school programs. Contact Ashley Steward, Administrative Assistant for Children and Youth Services, if you’d like to purchase a package of 6 cards for $12, 404-378-1082 or email ashley.stewart@decaturga.com.
