There is no excuse to stay home this weekend with so many choices of things to do. The weather will be beautiful so get out and enjoy your hometown!

The Lakeside High School Jazz Band will be performing on the Bandstand on the Old Courthouse Square tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 pm. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the free show.

The Decatur Market and Gallery will hold an Opening Reception on Saturday from 5 until 10 pm featuring Mohamed ElGanoby who does encaustic paintings on wood.  These organic works have depth, texture and vibrant color. The gallery will be serving Egyption food and the outside artists’ market will be open as well. The reception is free to the community.

The Seen Gallery on Church Street is proud to host a showing  of modern Australian landscape painting from the perspectives of two non-aboriginal natives who have been shaped by the land where they live, and approach their techniques from two completely different perspectives. The opening reception will be held on Saturday night from 7 until 10 pm. Be sure to stop by to meet the artists as well as view the other artwork in the gallery.

Little Shop of Stories is having a Pete the Cat Party on Saturday evening from 7 pm until “the cats come home”! They are celebrating the end of their weeklong celebration of books with a storytime and music by New York Times’ bestselling author Eric Litwin and New York Times’ bestselling illustrator James Dean.  Meeooooooooooooow!  (White shoes optional, since it’s not Memorial Day yet.) 

On Saturday the  Oakhurst Community Garden invites you to join hundreds of fellow garden lovers and martini drinkers from 5:30 – 8:30 pm for the 5th Annual Martinis in the Garden. During this outdoor party you’ll stroll and dance among martini bars, fresh food stations and silent auction tables set amid the blooming garden plots, the greenhouse, the earthen playhouse, the “carnivorous” bog and Team Chicken’s famous coop. Tickets are $50 at the door.

On Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, join the Decatur Civic Chorus as they present their 62nd annual Spring Concert at the First Baptist Church of Decatur. The concert is a “Centennial Celebration of Johnny Mercer and a Salute to our Armed Forces”. The concert is free to the community and part of the annual Decatur Arts Festival May events.

And last, but certainly not least, the Decatur Business Association invites you to hear The Bitteroots at the Concert on the Square on Saturday evening from 7 until 9:30 pm. The concert is free to the community, so bring your picnic or stop by one of our many fine restaurants before or after the concert and make a full evening of it.

The Bitteroots are playing the Concert on the Square this coming Saturday night, May 15. The concert begins at 7 pm on the Bandstand located on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur. According to their Facebook page, The Bitteroots are a new Atlanta band carving out a sound reminiscent of the past masters dressed up with a modern flavor all their own. Pack a picnic or stop by one of our many fine restaurants before or after the concert.

The Concert series is presented free to the community by the Decatur Business Association and Wachovia/Wells Fargo Bank. Co-sponsors of the Concert are Parker’s on Ponce, Dr. DiFrancesco and Decatur News Online.

Parker’s On Ponce is holding a James Stewart Winemaker’s Dinner tonight at 7 pm. James Stewart was featured on the cover of the March 2010 Entrepreneur Magazine. Several Dancer’s CORE is celebrating their 30 Year Anniversary tonight  from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at the studio. The festivities will include mingling with the dancers, light refreshments and a champagne toast! For more information or to make a donation, click here.

Little Shop of Stories invites you to Shrek Storytime tonight at 7 pm. The final movie installment in the Shrek saga will be released soon, and to get ready for the new movie they’re having a special storytime featuring William Steig’s classic book, Shrek. You can also draw your favorite characters and read other gross monster stories.

 

Rhythm Ranch

The Decatur Library invites you to hear Rhythm Ranch (formerly Cowboy Envy) tonight at 7 pm in the auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Rhythm Ranch  is a new group anchored by two members of the beloved all female western band, Cowboy Envy, Berné Poliakoff (aka Frenchy) and Kathleen Hatfield (aka Buffalo K). Their work has garnered much praise and multiple awards, including the “Best Harmony” award from the Western Music Association (twice). Their vocals have been described as “heavenly…with harmonies to die for” (Atlanta Journal Constitution). Together, Frenchy and Buffalo K have performed at festivals and concerts from Alaska to South Carolina. With Rhythm Ranch, the ladies have joined up with an amazing fiddler (Al Pieper) and an extraordinary bassist (L.A. Tuten). Together they deliver dynamic performances, filled with wonderful music and great humor, delighting audiences of all ages. The event is free to the community.

During the week of June 28, The Decatur Police Department will host its first Junior Police Academy for Decatur residents who have completed the 7th or 8th grade during the 2009-2010 school year. Students will participate in fun and educational exercises designed to simulate real law enforcement activities.

Applications are due on June 4 at 5 p.m. and can be obtained at the Decatur Police Department or at Renfroe Middle School.

Flags are posted in the new location to help shoppers find the Saturday market

This Saturday, May 15th, the Decatur Farmers Market is celebrating the grand opening of its new market at the corner of North McDonough and Trinity from 9a.m. – noon.   Free parking will be available and the market is only a short walk from the Decatur Square. This offers a great opportunity for shoppers to incorporate some locally grown food into their weekend grocery lists.  The Decatur Farmers Market offers locally grown fresh organic and sustainable produce, flowers, and other organic and sustainable food products such as bread, jam, and sauces.

Now there are two opportunities to try the Decatur Farmers Market each week:

Wednesday 4p.m. – 7p.m. (Summer hours), Bank of America parking lot at the corner of Commerce Drive and Church Street

Saturday 9a.m. – noon, corner of North McDonough and Trinity (across the street from the Chik-Fil-A on N. McDonough in downtown Decatur)

International Compost Awareness Week

COMPOST AWARENESS EVENT:
“Recycling for a Greener Tomorrow”

The grand opening of the new market will feature a compost demonstration event hosted by the DeKalb County Natural Resource Management Office – Keep DeKalb Beautiful, DeKalb Extension Service, and the DeKalb Master Gardeners.

Demonstration tables will include:

  • How to grow your vegetables using compost in your soil,
  • The difference between Mulch and Compost, and information soil sampling,
  • How to obtain, manage, and use an Outdoor Compost Bin,
  • Vermicomposting,
  • FREE Compost Bin give-a-ways,
  • $5.00 tree seedlings, and
  • Make your own Terrarium with compost.

John Zedd plays this week at the Blue Sky Concert on the Square

If it’s May, it must be time for the return of Blue Sky Concerts on the Square! Presented by the Decatur Business Association and SunTrust Bank, the concerts are a great time to gather on the square for a mid-day break. This week’s concert features Decatur musician John Zedd. 

Stop by one of Decatur’s many restaurants and order a lunch to go and join us on the Square. The concerts begin at noon and run until 1 pm.

The 22nd Annual Decatur Arts Festival unveiled this year’s festival poster at a wonderful and fun Poster Unveiling last Thursday at the Old Courthouse on the Square. The poster was designed by James Dean and features the ubiquitous Pete the Cat. Many “oooohs” and “aaahs” were heard as the drape was lifted. Posters and t-shirts featuring the design will be available at the Information Tents at the festival.

The Decatur Arts Festival will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, May 29 and 30, on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur. The festival will kick off with the ArtWalk on Friday, May 28th at dozens of businesses in Decatur. Events will also be held throughout the month including  the Fine Arts Exhibition Opening Reception on May25th at Agnes Scott College, a performance by the Decatur Civic Chorus on May 16 and Literary Arts events throughout the week of May 25th.

The Dead Poets Society of America and Georgia plan to have a poetry reading in the Decatur Cemetery on Wednesday, May 12 at 2 p.m.  The reading is part of a nationwide 2010 tour and will be the 1st historic Georgia Dead Poets event.

The event will take place at the gravesite of Thomas Holley Chivers in the old historic section off Commerce Avenue.  Thomas Holley Chivers, October 18, 1809 – December 18, 1858, was an American doctor-turned-poet from Georgia.  He is best known for his friendship with Edgar Allan Poe and his controversial defense of the poet after his death.

The event includes readings, poets, musicians and actors.  On hand will be SC Poet Laureate Marjorie Wentworth, local actor Rob Constantine and others.  Freeport, Maine amateur poet Walter Skold founded the Dead Poets Society of America, and he is on a 20-event 2010 Dead Poets Grand Tour with stops at graves of American bards.

And last, but not least, bring the family up to the Square on Saturday night for a free Concert on the Square. This week’s concert features Bonaventure Quartet from 7 until 9:30 pm. You may want to come up early and browse one of the many shops in Decatur to pick out that something special.
