Take a stroll through Decatur and view the contestants in the first Window Display Contest hosted by the Decatur Business Association and the Downtown Development Authority. The theme is Decatur Beach Party and participating businesses have a sign in their window with a text to vote number. For a list of the participants and more information, click here. The winner will be announced at the Decatur Beach Party on June 18.

On Sunday, June 13 at 2:30 pm  take a tour of the Decatur Cemetery. This guided tour of the oldest part of the cemetery is led by volunteer and Decatur Cemetery expert Cathy Vogel and lasts approximately one hour.   Whether this is your first visit or your 30th, you’ll learn something you didn’t know about metro Atlanta’s oldest public burial space.  Meet at the well house gazebo off of Commerce Drive.

I just got this in my inbox and love the idea so much that I wanted to do a quick blog post about it. Decatur’s car museum/ice cream parlor, Relics & Rarities, is hosting an art contest this month. The details are below:

Ordinance O-10-04 restricting the use of coasters, skateboards, in-line skates and similar devices in the pedestrian preference zone of the downtown business district became effective on June 1st.  For a  full description of the changes and a map of the zone, please refer to pages 11-18 of the May 3, 2010 City Commission agenda.

One can still ride a bicycle in the area. And skateboards are always welcome at the McKoy Park skate park (1000 Adams Street). For more information, contact the Decatur Police Department at 404-373-6551.

The annual Decatur Beach Party is coming up soon- June 18th from 5 pm until  midnight. This year there will be three bands! The Reputations will play on the Bandstand from 5 pm until 7:30 pm and Terry Lee & The GTs will play on the Plaza Main Stage from 8pm until midnight. Click here to hear them playing at last year’s event.

The Children’s Boardwalk area features some new games and activities that will be fun for all ages.

See you on Decatur Beach!

The Decatur Beach Party Window Decorating Contest officially started on Friday and over 300 people have already voted! We’ll be updating the polls daily on the City website so you can see which businesses are currently in the lead.

A couple of us are in Las Vegas for the Transforming Local Government conference. During the awards lunch today, the City of Decatur won an award for our Open City Hall program. (Apologies for the grainy photo – I only have my camera phone with me).

The City of Decatur was one of the pilot cities for Open City Hall, an online forum for civic engagement. If you’ve never used Open City Hall before and are a resident of Decatur, check it out on the city’s website here. We’re currently looking for feedback on the 2010/2011 proposed budget.

Be sure to stop by the “Last Call” for the Decatur Arts Festival Fine Arts Exhibition on Sunday, June 6  from 4 until 6 pm. The “Last Call” is your last chance to view this great exhibit as well as hear from some of the artists that created the works. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced and you will have the opportunity to share some refreshments as well as enjoy some music. The event is free, and parking is available in the Agnes Scott parking deck on S. McDonough. For more information on the Decatur Arts Alliance click here.

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority and Decatur Business Association are hosting the first ever Decatur Window Decorating Contest starting this Friday, June 4.

Participating shops will decorate their windows with a Beach Party theme, and shoppers can vote for their favorite windows using a text to vote service during the next two weeks leading up to the Beach Party.

How does it work? Visit the participating shops and restaurants between June 4 and June 18. Check out their windows and vote for your favorite using the special text code found on the storefront windows. Voting is limited to one phone number per hour so technically you can vote for multiple businesses, multiple times. We’ll be updating the polling daily here so you can see how your favorite window is doing.

Visit www.decaturga.com for a list of the participating businesses and have fun!

The winning window will be announced at the Beach Party on Friday, June 18.

Linda Manners, DAA Director Angie Macon and Felix Berroa

You may have seen the Fox 5 News van on Church Street this morning outside of the Yogurt Tap. Blaze Meyer and Cheryl White were in town to interview Decatur Arts Festival artists and the owners of the Yogurt Tap for Good Morning Atlanta.

Glass artist Linda Manners of the Atlanta Glass Art Guild and painter Felix Berroa were on hand to tell a bit about their art and the festival. As you may know, the Arts Festival kicks off on Friday night with the ArtWalk and then continues Saturday & Sunday will a full slate of events. A full schedule of events is available here.

Then Cheryl White  enjoyed creating a unique combination of yogurts and interviewed the owners of the Yogurt Tap. You can view both clips by clicking here.

Gather up the children and head over to the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur for the last of this month’s Blue Sky Concerts. Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band will be performing from noon until 1 pm. Bring the kids on down for an hour of crazy fun music, singing and dancing. Original songs include a celebration of the sound and smell of cooking bacon and the daily challenge of locating small, misplaced shoes!

Join us on the Square for this special children’s concert- but beware, even the adults will find themselves smiling and singing along!

The Decatur Business Association produces the  Blue sky Concert with presenting sponsor SunTrust Bank. This week’s co-sponsors are Lotus of Life, Kaiser Permanente and Little Shop of Stories.
