UPDATE: Please bring a lunch for each child you drop off at Polar Camp.

It’s still really cold out, and City Schools of Decatur will be closed tomorrow. For City of Decatur residents looking for something for the little polar bears (aka children) to do, there will be a special Polar Camp tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St.

Polar Camp is first-come, first served for a limited number of City of Decatur students in Kindergarten through fifth grade only. There is no cost for Polar Camp for Decatur residents. Parents will need to fill out registration and health forms when dropping off campers who are not already enrolled in after school programs.

For more information, please call Children and Youth Services at 404-378-1082.

It’s cold out today in Decatur and set to get colder by evening, but tonight’s work session about the draft tree ordinance at 6 p.m. and the regular City Commission meeting at 7:30 p.m. will still take place as scheduled at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

Don’t feel like braving the weather but want to see what happens? You can live stream both meetings on the City of Decatur website’s City Commission page by clicking on “streaming video.”

The recycling that was supposed to be picked up on Thursday, January 2 will be picked up on Friday, January 3.  So to all those on the regular Thursday route – please leave your recycling out or put it back out to be picked up in the morning.  We had a communication mix-up with the recycling company.  They will be out tomorrow picking up both the Thursday and Friday routes.

Thanks for your patience and Happy New Year!

The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a “Self-Protection Workshop” on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center (231 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030). Teens ages 13-17 are welcome to attend this workshop with a parent/guardian.

This workshop is designed to teach you how to be proactive, maintain awareness and be decisive during a violent confrontation. In the workshop, the presenter will cover:

  • Behavioral Profiling – Situational Awareness – Personal Security vs. Self-Defense
  • Mindset – Conditions of Readiness – Warning & Danger Signs of an Attack
  • Simple & Effective Self-Defense Techniques – Improvised weapons

The presenter of the workshop, Steven Mosley, has over two decades of law enforcement work experience and currently works locally for the Department of Homeland Security.  Steven is also the Director of Training for the Combat Hard Training Center in Jonesboro.

“When I was looking for someone to help my wife and I with dealing with some of the challenges that come up in our work in the course of our ministry with people who are sometimes unpredictable and violent and dealing with dicey situations in general I was pretty thorough in my vetting process because I was looking for someone who would give us a better chance of living through the real situations we face.  We need something that works.  I asked SWAT officers that I know from various police departments, veteran officers, GBI officers, and state troopers.  Steven’s name kept coming up, I called him, and found both a solid teacher, mentor, and friend.  I can’t recommend him highly enough.” – Nathan Dean, Co-Pastor, Edgewood Church

The “Self-Protection Workshop” is a lecture presentation and NOT a physical self-defense class. Informational flyers on self-defense classes through the Combat Hard Training Center will be available after the workshop.

Monitor in VOA environment

storm waterWeather permitting, Reeves Contracting plans to start installing the new storm sewer on Church Street south of East Maple on January 2.  The new storm sewer will extend from East Maple down Church Street towards the CSX railroad and then east on East Howard Avenue.

Businesses on Church Street between East Maple Street and East Howard Avenue should notify patrons that once work begins, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction, so they will have to approach this area from East Trinity Place.

On-street parking on Church Street will be limited in the immediate area of construction. A schematic plan illustrating temporary traffic changes can be viewed here.

Not only is tomorrow the first day of 2014, it also happens to be the first Wednesday of the month. And you know that means, right? We’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 2 January 2014.

Storm Drainage Update

storm water

Reeves Contracting  has completed repairs to the water line on East Maple Street and plans to start making new water service connections to each residence and business on East Maple today on Monday, December 23.  During this work, water service to each property will be interrupted for about one hour.  Reeves will notify each resident or business prior to the service interruption. Once the new service connections are made Reeves plans to finish the sidewalks on East Maple Street.

Reeves hopes to start installing the new storm sewer on Church Street south of East Maple on January 2.  Businesses on Church Street south of East Maple should begin notifying customers that once work begins on the new Church Street storm line, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction.
