Tracie Sanchez with Decatur Active Living shares the following time change for Walk with a Doc:

WWAD Time = 10:00 am every Wednesday

Georgia is heating up and so is our city, so we will walk earlier in the day. Beginning next week on June 11 we will depart at 10am for our walk and continue through June/July/August. Yes, that means we are leaving an hour earlier.  Active Adults that we polled voted to have a leisurely breakfast routine at home and then come walk, so 10am wins!

Walk With a Doc is a free, group walking program, that occurs weekly at the Decatur Recreation Center. We are local chapter of http://www.walkwithadoc.org and offer 7 routes across the city and average about 3 miles weekly at an easy pace. We have a doc join us and a CAPS volunteer walk with us to keep us safe at crossings and around hazards. Usually about 10-15 walkers arrive for the walk and enjoy a informal chat with a different doc each week. Below is a list of docs who have led our walks and we are always recruiting for more. We start each walk with a quick intro, grab some water, and head out.

Instructor

Staffer Tracie leads along with the guest Doc, and the CAPS volunteer brings up the back. Our routes are on sidewalks and in greenspace throughout the city. Everyone enjoys the chat while walking 2×2 and it has become quite social. Come meet some new folks and ramp up your fitness routine. Sometimes we try new tools like trekking poles, chi walking, cooling neck scarves, pre-post walk stretching sessions.

Free shirt to those who walk

Walking is the one activity that everyone can do without special gear although we do recommend a good, supportive shoe, water, and a sun visor. We issue Walk With a Doc shirts to all walkers and Docs who complete one walk with us. Come get your shirt!

See you at 10am every Wednesday, meet Tracie in the lobby!

A map and information service is available for a $10 fee. This service provides inquirers with flood insurance rate map information and identifies whether a property is in a special flood hazard area. Derrydown bridge.Decatur2014.5.12.bThe Derrydown Bridge is now open! Funded through the City of Decatur’s Sidewalk Improvement Program, this new bridge restores a key connection across Shoal Creek between Poplar Circle and Derrydown Way. Senior Engineer John Madajewski of the City’s Design, Environment & Construction Division managed the project and Ohmshiv Construction, LLC of Lawrenceville constructed the bridge, which cost approximately $79,000.

The city’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) process wrapped up its second phase in May after four drill-down sessions explored  details of  the following regulatory topics:

Community character: What is it? Does it matter, and how/if should it be regulated? Participant sentiments were diverse, from increased control over details like house size and lot coverage to loosening up regulations currently in place to removing some regulations altogether.

Storm water management and the balancing of individual and community concerns. For example, those at the top of a water flow may feel differently about adding a large, impervious patio than those at the bottom of the flow dealing with a flooded basement fueled by increased runoff. The meeting explored ways to broaden residents options for meeting storm water requirements easier and possibly less costly through the use of trees and green infrastructure.

Sustainability with a focus on high performance and “green” buildings, as well as issues such as outdoor lighting, animals, and unbundled parking.

New Zoning categories leveraged in service of the City’s housing goals that emerged during the 2010 Strategic Plan were presented for consideration and discussion.

Phase 3 of the Unified Development Ordinance, which includes distilling the community conversation into rules for consideration, is currently underway. The UDO team began responding to all feedback received in May. The timeline moving forward is:

June: Preliminary direction presented to the UDO citizen Steering Committee; City Commission updated on progress; initial drafts reviewed by city staff.

July: Full draft released for public review via DecaturNext.com; drill-down issues addressed via Open City Hall.

August: Full draft presented to City Commission. Review and comment period opens, followed by second draft late in the month.

September: Comprehensive draft presented to Planning Commission and City Commission.

Visit  www.decaturnext.com for ongoing coverage on the process so far and moving forward and share your thoughts on the issues raised.
