tbtMARTA_500

Decatur is one of the few MARTA stations located underground on the east line and it’s pretty great. Instead of running along the train tracks as an elevated line, the MARTA tunnel diverges north just after the East Lake station so that the Decatur station is smack dab in the middle of the Decatur square – underground. This photo is from 1976. Pedestrians had to walk over bridges to get from one side of the square to the other during the lengthy construction process. There’s something kind of terrifying seeing downtown Decatur split down the middle by a giant trench, especially for those of us who have only known it as the Decatur Square – with grass, a fog fountain, and plenty of open space. Most people who come to our festivals on the square have no idea they’re standing just 18 inches above the ceiling of the MARTA station!

Didn’t believe me in last week’s #TBT post when I said Downtown Decatur was mostly parking lots and car dealerships? Well, here’s proof. Cars, cars, and more cars. If you haven’t already guessed, you’re looking the intersection of West Ponce de Leon Avenue and Commerce Drive pre The Artisan, SunTrust/Chipotle, and CVS.

There’s a misconception that these parking spaces were eliminated when the land was developed. That’s not the case at all. Mixed use developments still contain the same amount of public parking spaces that they replaced, but they’re wrapped by a building and in a parking garage. This makes for a better looking downtown and a much better experience for pedestrians.

Construction on East Maple

Starting this week of January 11, Rampart Construction Company, contractor for the Arlo development, will begin construction of a new sanitary sewer line in East Maple Street.  This work has been required by DeKalb County Watershed Management and is being done to provide additional  sewer capacity for the Arlo residents and businesses.  Work is expected to take six weeks of good weather, starting on the west end of East Maple at North McDonough Street and moving east to Church Street.  During that time Rampart will provide traffic control.  The road will be closed to thru-traffic during construction and will be changed to a two-way street for local residents and businesses.  Parking on East Maple Street will be prohibited during construction.

Rampart has given out flyers and done door-to-door visits to inform property owners of the coming work and the City’s engineering department is in the process of providing alternate parking on North McDonough Street when needed.  The work will be done in phases to limit the disturbance, and access to driveways will be maintained as much as possible. Plates will be used during non-work hours so that the road will be fully open and the sidewalks will remain open at all times.  If you have questions, feel free to contact Project Civil Engineer Jennings Bell at 678-553-6529 or D.E.C. Director John Maximuk at 678-553-6570.

A message from DeKalb County’s Department of Watershed Management –

A temporary road closure to facilitate Sanitary Sewer System improvements on Superior Avenue is expected to begin on Monday, November 30th and weather permitting, will last approximately three (3) weeks.

Be advised that Superior Avenue between Scott Boulevard and Willow Lane will be closed to thru traffic. Access will also be limited to local traffic from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The County is alerting residents that detours will be in effect, and heavy equipment and construction noise may be noticeable. However, County crews will work diligently to minimize the duration of the construction period and road closure. Patience is appreciated while the improvements are made.

Don’t Text and Drive

The City of Decatur Fire Department is working with Decatur High School to prevent texting while driving. There is a crushed vehicle on display in front of the high school that is a result of an actual texting while driving incident.

From Fire Captain Violante: In the past two months the fire department has responded to a large increase in the numbers of pedestrians hit by distracted drivers. We hope this crushed vehicle encourages people to be safer while driving. The display will be present until Saturday, November 21st.
