The Muses

Thursday, February 5th

Returning for the third year from Colorado, The Muses, featuring Tanya Brody and Matthew Guernsey, each play a plethora of exotic instruments ranging from bohdran and concertina to harp and  hammered dulcimer; psaltery, pennywhistle, fiddle and bones to name a few.  They perform with a ferocity and strength of heart that embodies the Celtic music they love so dearly.

Agnes Scott College debuts “Agnes Writes” on February 2 and you are invited!  This new series of writing classes, taught by several of Atlanta’s most accomplished authors and hosted by Agnes Scott College, allows all area writers the opportunity to hear from professionals and develop your craft at the same time.

What better way to spend the cold winter evenings than hear from David Fulmer (teaching his popular Fiction Shop – an intense study of the art and craft of storytelling), Hollis Gillespie (The Shocking Real-Life Personal Essay Clinic – Your Crazy Family), Chelsea Rathburn (a poetry workshop aimed at developing poets’ voices), and Terra Elan McVoy (“Writing Like a Grown-Up, But Thinking Like a Kid” a class on writing chapter books for children).

The series is led by Daren Wang (most recently of AJC Decatur Book Festival fame but also Verb and The Spoken Word) with the collaboration of Tom Bell (also of Book Festival fame, the Duck & Herring Pocket Field Guide and Creative Loafing) and David Fulmer (Shamus Award winning author of six novels).

Most classes will meet weekly, 6 -8 p.m., for eight weeks.  Visit www.agneswrites.com for details.

ing-logoThe 3rd annual ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur on Sunday, March 29th. The City of Decatur and the organizers of the marathon are holding a Community Meeting on Thursday, February 5th from 6 until 7pm in the Commission Room of Decatur City Hall. The meeting will inform citizens of route details, volunteer opportunities, and the Neighborhood Challenge. The first year of the marathon Decatur won first place for the best cheering section and a donation of $10,000 to youth sports programs. The second year Decatur won second place and a donation of $5000 to youth programs. No reason why we can’t win again and make it three in a row!

Part of our effort both years included a series of “Burma Shave” type signs posted along the route. We continue to expand the effort and need your help. Submit your ideas for Burma Shave rhymes to lyn.menne@decaturga.com.

For those who cannot attend the meeting, but would like to stay informed, send your email address to cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com for updates and volunteer opportunites. We look forward to seeing a lot of Decaturites at our official cheering station in front of Fellini’s Pizza on March 29th.

Did you happen to take photos at the 2008 Decatur Wine Tasting Festival on Saturday, November 1?  We are looking for photos of an older woman who came to the festival in her wheel chair.  It was her birthday and she and her son, who was visiting from Texas, decided to come in at the last minute.  Her son reported that she had a great time and attendees kept coming up to her and taking her photo and telling her they wanted to be just like her when they reached her age.  She loved the attention and the day!

Her son called to say that his mother died two weeks after the Wine Festival and he would so much like to have a photo of her enjoying her last birthday.  She was a long-time Decatur resident and he went to Decatur High School in the 1960s.  If anyone has a photo, please let us know or email it to linda.harris@decaturga.com.

The Decorate Decatur judges loved the over-sized snowflakes and blue and white lights on their Decatur home.

To see photos and descriptions of all the 2008 Decorate Decatur, visit the city’s Decorate Decatur webpage.

It might be 65 degrees outside, but Adair Street is filled with snow people. The street’s theme this year is “There’s No People Like Snow People.” We encourage everyone to take a drive or walk down this street at night. Here’s a preview of what you’ll see:

Wordsmith’s, Greene’s and Parker’s all have great holiday decor. Believe it or not, the paper snowflakes on Wordsmith’s windows were cut out by hand:

One of the winners even created a google map listing all of the 2008 Decorate Decatur sites. We’re so impressed! Check it out here.

Tomorrow evening will be the first Terrific Thursday in December, which means two things:

1.) Santa will be out and about, visiting the shops and handing out candy canes! and…
2.) Two Terrific Thursday shuttles (Cliff buses) will be circling Decatur to take shoppers around town. The route and all ten stops can be found on the map here.

shuttlesigns
Each stop is marked with one of these fancy Shuttle Stop signs. Special Events Coordinator, Cheryl Burnette, is an expert at getting the signs in the ground – in heels no less!

We’re also excited about our brand new Terrific Thursday signs featuring a festive flamingo and penguin (we figured reindeers and polar bears were overused this time of year). Five of these signs will appear around the city every Thursday night until Christmas. Take a picture of you and your family standing by one of these signs, send it to us and we’ll include it on this blog!

Jeff, owner of Whit’s End, is kindly helping us out by taking care of the West Ponce Terrific Thursday sign for the next few weeks. He’ll be placing it outside on his end of the street each Thursday. Can you find the other four? *Hint: check out where Juan and I are standing in the photo above.*

A couple of highlights for this week’s Terrific Thursdays:

Dresscodes is throwing a two year anniversary party with a great art show opening. These events are always a lot of fun and the best part is you can still do some holiday shopping while you’re mingling with the crowd.

greensfinefoodsThis Thursday at Greene’s make your own gingerbread house from 3 to 8 p.m. The folks over at Greene’s will help you get in the holiday spirit and entertain your kids while you shop in the store at 10% off. The cost is $15 per house and is first come, first serve.

Visit the City’s Terrific Thursday page for a listing of the participating shops and restaurants.
