2014 PGM Decatur Course MapReminder

Don’t forget the 2014 Publix GA Marathon is this Sunday, March 23, 2014.  There will be road closures and delays along the route as it weaves through the city between 7:15 am – 11:00 am.  The marathon enters Decatur on West College Avenue at Park Place near the East Lake Marta Station and exits the city in the 1100 block of Clairemont Avenue near the Decatur YMCA.  Keep in mind the marathon starts and ends in downtown Atlanta and travels through parts of DeKalb County as well.

Decatur Road Closures:

  • West College Avenue from Park Place to East College Avenue and Commerce Drive
  • East Ponce de Leon Avenue from Commerce Drive to Clairemont Avenue
  • Clairemont Avenue from East/West Ponce de Leon Avenue to Commerce Drive

Decatur Lane Closures:

  • Commerce Drive from East College Avenue to East Ponce de Leon Avenue
  • Clairemont Avenue from Commerce Drive to North Decatur Road

There will be traffic delays around the course throughout the duration of the marathon. The runners have the right-of-way at all times and no traffic will be released if it could impede the runners.  Traffic will not be permitted to turn onto roads that are closed and will only be allowed to cross at certain points when doing so will not impede the runners.  Traffic will be permitted onto the roads with partial lane closures when doing so will not impede the runners.  Please understand that even if you are travelling on a road that is not part of the course but crosses the course or is near the course, you will experience delays.  Please check your schedules and the course maps and plan accordingly.

The Bright Side

We are about the halfway point for the runners and regularly receive feedback about how great it feels to come through Decatur and have so many people cheering.  Aside from the fixed cheering stations at West College Avenue & Mead Road, Fellini’s on Commerce Drive and in front of the Old Courthouse on East Ponce de Leon Avenue, it is not uncommon for residents to pop up along the route and cheer.  So if you have Sunday morning plans that require driving, plan on heading out earlier or later or plot an alternate route.  If you have no plans that require driving, it’s a great day to walk into downtown Decatur for errands, brunch and to cheer!

The Kids’ Used Clothes (& Stuff) Sale is one of the most popular sales for children’s used clothing and accessories in the Atlanta area.  Shoppers enjoy tremendous bargains on a huge selection of high-quality second-hand items for newborns through teens.

Every spring and fall since 1993, hundreds of buyers and sellers participate in this co-op sale, which makes children’s outfits, toys and equipment truly affordable. A portion of the proceeds go to our host church, which uses the money to support  programs and services that benefit children and families in our community.

We have every imaginable article of children’s clothing — including uniforms, jackets, T-shirts, fancy outfits, and costumes — plus an  enormous selection of toys and accessories galore, from sports equipment and educational items to games and dolls to infant and baby equipment like strollers, high chairs, cribs and swings.

Do you love mornings and wake up early just looking for something to do?

We need two or three teams of folks willing to help us put up the “Burma Shave” signs along the Publix Marathon route through the City of Decatur. All you need is a vehicle large enough to hold some signs and a love of getting up at the crack of dawn. The marathon is Sunday, March 23rd and we start putting out signs at 5:30 a.m. We’ll even buy you breakfast when we are done and we dedicate this Burma Shave Rhythm to you:

Morning people are very jolly

Even at 5:30 a.m. they’re smiling by golly

Setting out signs before the sun’s up

Is exactly the thing that makes them jump!

Decatur!

Each year, the Publix Georgia Marathon runs right through downtown Decatur. This event brings thousands of runners ( and probably new visitors) though our great City. We do our best to welcome them with cheering crowds, upbeat music, and fun noisemakers and signs. We want everyone who runs through Decatur to come back and visit us,so we need to make a lasting impression.

So what can you do to help?  Call some friends and neighbors and plan to join us along the race route. The runners enter our city limits around 8:30am so come on out and make some noise! We will be there with plenty of noisemakers, pom-poms, and doughnuts to share. Join a group in front of Felini’s , the Old Courthouse, or near the Eastlake Marta Station.
