It’s official, Google Fiber is coming to metro Atlanta. Google will be working closely with Decatur and other local city leaders on the next steps to build a brand new fiber-optic network capable of delivering gigabit speeds.

“We are here because of the hard work, passion and commitment of the city and its leaders,” said Kevin Lo, Director of Business Operations for Google Fiber. “The next chapter of the Internet will be written at gigabit speeds.”

Google Fiber is an Internet and TV service that provides Internet speeds up to one gigabit per second, along with hundreds of HD TV channels. Google Fiber is currently available in Kansas City, Provo, Utah and Austin, Texas.

“The City of Decatur is thrilled to be one of the metro Atlanta cities that will get connected to Google Fiber,” said Mayor Jim Baskett. “We are a community of homes, schools and places of worship. And we know that Google Fiber’s incredibly fast internet will benefit our community greatly. The entire city looks forward to partnering with Google to make the process of installing Google Fiber as easy and seamless as possible.”

The next stage of work includes designing and planning a new fiber-optic network down to a very detailed level. After this process, which will take several months, Google Fiber will begin constructing the network.

FAQs from Google

Now that you’ve announced Google Fiber is coming, what happens next?

In order to make the construction of Google Fiber as smooth and speedy as possible, Google will be working with city leaders over the next several months to complete a detailed design of a fiber network — an important step before starting construction, since building a network from scratch is a “measure-twice-cut-once” type of project.

Do you have a date when Google Fiber will start service?

It will take some time before Google Fiber starts signups. In the next several months they will be working with city leaders to design the network. Once there is a detailed plan in place, they can begin initial construction.

You mentioned that the next step is “designing your network”. What does that entail, exactly?

Google Fiber needs to build thousands of miles of fiber throughout the city – but they can’t just put it wherever they want. They take all of the information submitted during the planning process to create a comprehensive plan for building their fiber network. The design helps enable Google Fiber to do construction more efficiently and smoothly once they get going. Some concrete steps they will take during this next phase:

  • Use the infrastructure data that the city has shared to create a map of where they can put fiber (e.g., existing utility poles, conduit) and areas to avoid (e.g., water, sewer and electric lines), as well as the most efficient sequence of construction within the city.
  • A team of surveyors and engineers hits the streets to fill in any missing details. You may see crews out doing detailed surveying work — lots of staring up at poles and even a bit of geological rock-testing.
  • They take this information back to the office and create detailed network design maps, do work with the city to locate network infrastructure and fiber huts, and start to prepare permitting packages.
  • Then they design the network, street by street.

Friends School to Hold Panel on Education Integration as a Public Good

On Saturday, January 31, 2015, The Friends School of Atlanta (FSA) will hold its 5th annual Beloved Community Dialogue, featuring an intergenerational panel discussion on how a fully integrated education is good for everyone. To be moderated by Dr. Elizabeth DeBray, Professor of Education at the University of Georgia, the panel will also include Elizabeth Wilson, Mayor Emeritus of Decatur and longtime civil rights activist, and Maurlia Upchurch, an FSA alum and current junior at Duke University, among others. The conversation will focus on how an integrated education is ultimately for the good of the individual as well as the public, based in the belief that access to and diversity in education is critical to a thriving society and very much a civil rights issue, especially when our schools are becoming alarmingly resegregated.

Founded in 1991, The Friends School of Atlanta remains the only Quaker school in Georgia. Every day at FSA, the faculty and staff strive to instill those values in its students deemed essential for building the all-inclusive Beloved Community envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., where differences are embraced as strengths, not feared, and every single person is respected as an individual of infinite worth. Like Dr. King, Quakers believe that through empathy and respect for others and personal integrity, connections can be made that can resolve even the fiercest disputes between nations, religions, cultures or individuals. As the work to build Beloved Community in our society moves forward, FSA seeks to make a critical contribution by instilling the Quaker values of equality, integrity and community in its students and by hosting these dialogues that are designed to educate and ultimately uplift us all as we realize our individual and collective capacities for peace making and community building.

The Beloved Community Dialogue will be held at the FSA campus at 862 Columbia Drive in Decatur and is open to the public. General admission is $10 per ticket. Premium tickets are $100 each and include invitation to a reception with the esteemed panelists. The reception for premium ticket holders begins at 5:00 pm, and the panel discussion will take place from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. For more information about the event and purchasing tickets, please visit the FSA website at www.friendsschoolatlanta.org or contact Nancy Bent, Director of Advancement: 404-373-8746 x8135; nancy.bent@friendsschoolatlanta.org.

The Friends School of Atlanta, offering a pre-K – 8th grade program, has a mission to provide challenging academics in a diverse environment, drawing on the Quaker values of a simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship to empower students to go out into the world with conscience, conviction and compassion. In preparation for the Jewish holiday of Chanukah, adults and families will experience the history and traditions of the Festival of Lights hands-on at Chabad Intown’s “Menorah Lighting.”

Chabad Intown’s “Menorah Lighting” will be held on Wednesday, December 17th @ 6:00 PM in Decatur Square. Join us for Hot Latkes, hot drinks, donuts, raffles and prizes.

Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, recalls the ancient victory of a militarily weak but spiritually strong Jewish people over an enemy that had sought to prohibit their religious freedoms. Upon recapturing Jerusalem and the Temple from the Syrian Greeks, the Jewish people found only one small jar of undefiled olive oil needed to kindle the Temple’s Menorah. Though there was only enough oil to burn for one day, it lasted miraculously for eight days until new, pure olive oil was produced. Ever since, in commemoration of this event, the Jewish people celebrate Chanukah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabra known as a Menorah. Today, people of all faiths consider the Chanukah holiday as a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness. (For more on the holiday visit www.chabadintown.org/Chanukah.)
