7th Annual Madison Ave Soapbox Derby

The 7th annual Madison Avenue Soapbox Derby will take place this  Saturday, October 7, at 11 a.m.

Cheer on over 90 racers take their turn down the hill in homemade soapbox derby cars.

Food from Oakhurst Market, Steinbeck’s, Universal Joint, Matador, Steel City Pops and the neighborhood bake sale will be available.

There will also be a beverage tent sponsored by The Faction, Red Hare Brewing, Three Taverns, Decatur Package & Publix.

Tornado Outdoor Warning Siren System Testing is Today

Today is the first Wednesday of October so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 5 October 2017.

Reimagine West Howard Avenue: Community Information Meeting

Over the past few months, Decatur residents and staff have explored ideas to improve the safety, comfort, and sense of place along West Howard Avenue. The Reimagine West Howard Avenue study is complete and includes a corridor that has been redesigned into an equitable multi-modal, livelier street, using public art, landscaping, street furniture, lighting, and programming.

Join us for a community information meeting on Thursday, October 12 as city staff shares project findings on how this corridor can be improved.

Decatur Fall Electronics Recycling Day

Electronic Recycling

Mark your calendars for the Fall Electronics Recycling event. Gather your old electronics, documents and even styrofoam to be recycled and shredded.

WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017  (9 am to 1 pm)

LOCATION: Decatur Public Works, 2635 Talley St. (Enter from Columbia Drive)

Recyclables must be dropped off during the hours of the event. Early drop-offs are not possible.

The fee for recycling cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs is $10 per TV set, and the fee for CRT monitors is $5 ea. Cash only, exact change required.

There is no charge to recycle other items. Any metro area resident can participate.

Walking Past the Dead Tree Tour at Decatur Cemetery

Update: Due to the threat of inclement weather, the tree tour has been rescheduled for October 28 from 4-7 p.m.

 

Join local arborists for a walk through the Decatur Cemetery. Learn about some of Decatur’s trees, tree types and needs, and listen to tree talks and stories. The event is free, but donations benefiting the Friends of Decatur Cemetery and Women Arborists of the Southeast are accepted. Visit Eventbrite to register.

Open Office Hour with Commissioner Tony Powers

Decatur will host its fifth Open Office Hour with Commissioner Tony Powers on Thursday, September 28 from 7 – 8 p.m. Commissioner Powers will speak for approximately 15-20 minutes on the topic of the role of the city and schools including ongoing and potential initiatives and partnerships.

Thanks to a $100,000 Livable Centers grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission, stakeholders of three different municipalities, one transit system, and a variety of business and environmental interests are converging to form the Make East Lake MARTA Yours initiative.

The community is invited to participate in two public participation opportunities:

KICK-OFF: COMMUNITY ACADEMY AND OPEN HOUSE

Join the discussion on population density, demographics, transportation, and economic development topics within in the first hour, then allow for input, questions, and comments thereafter.

Post Irma Construction Information from the Design, Environment & Construction Department

Tree Removal

There may be extensive clean up required for trees that were downed or partially downed during Tropical Storm Irma.  In order to expedite clean-up efforts,

The City Manager has issued a waiver consistent with the provisions of the Unified Development Ordinance Section 9.1.4 (C) (2) exempting tree permitting during and immediately after an emergency such as  Tropical Storm Irma. The requirement to obtain tree removal permits for DEVELOPED commercial and residential properties is being waived for a period of 30 days until October 14, 2017.  New construction is not covered by this waiver. For homeowner occupied residential properties covered under the “no net loss of canopy requirement”, required tree replacement will remain  on a one to one replacement  with six foot tall trees to be planted by December 31, 2019.

Construction

Permitting will continue as usual.  There are no waivers or changes related to Irma.  However, Design, Environment & Construction Division will permit all Irma storm damage within 24-36 hours of permit submittal.  In addition, electrical inspections can be arranged same day if it is related to storm damage.
