Innovation, inclusion, connection – What makes Decatur your All-America City? The City of Decatur is a finalist for the National Civic League’s prestigious All-America City Award, which recognizes the work of communities using inclusive civic engagement to address critical issues and bring all voices to the table. Representatives from the city are in Denver now to present the Better Together community action plan, community policing strategic plan, and the I Am Decatur project. Check out these initiatives and cheer Decatur on! Tune in for Facebook Live streaming from the awards ceremony tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.

Decatur Days of Summer Giveaway

Decatur Days of Summer are officially here – and we want to see how you celebrate them! We’re asking our community to share local summer-fun photos with the hashtag #decaturdaysofsummer on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and enter to win sweet City of Decatur swag from now until Labor Day (Sept. 3). Get out there and show us your favorite hang-outs, scenes, shops, patio dining spots, double-scoops with sprinkles on top… allll the summer vibes!

 

Official rules:
 

1. One (1) winner will be randomly selected from the list of users that submit their #decaturdaysofsummer photos to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Entry begins at 12 p.m. on 6/21 and ends at 11:59 p.m. 9/3.

2. Submitted photos may be shared, with credit for the photographer, by the City of Decatur across social media streams.

3. Contest winner will be notified via Facebook/Instagram/Twitter post or private message. Contest winner must be able to pick up their prize at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St.

4. The City of Decatur is not responsible for any issues or problems that arise after the winner claims their prize.

FY18-19 Budget Happenings

Are you interested in learning more about the City’s FY18-19 budget and 2018 millage rates? There are a few ways for you to get involved between now and adoption day on June 18, 2018.

  1. Take some time to read through the budget document. It’s available online at www.decaturga.com/budget. Or if you prefer to look at a hard copy, head over to the Decatur Library reference desk (215 Sycamore Street) or stop by the City Clerk’s Office (509 N. McDonough Street) to check one out.
  2. Attend a public hearing and let the City Commission know your thoughts on the budget and the 2018 millage rates. We have two more public hearings scheduled this upcoming Monday, June 18th –  3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in the City Commission Meeting Room at Decatur City Hall (509 N. McDonough Street.)
  3. Let us know your thoughts via the Open City Hall forum. If attending a meeting at City Hall just doesn’t work for you, you can still let the City Commission know your thoughts by sharing them here.
  4. Watch the archived video of the City Commission work session focused on the FY17-18 revised budget and the FY18-19 proposed budget. An archived video of the session is now available on the City’s website.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations Installation Begin Thurs., June 7

The City of Decatur, ChargePoint LLC, and Craft Electric & Maintenance will be installing Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations — one in the North McDonough parking loop in downtown Decatur, one in the Oakhurst Village — beginning Thursday, June 9 (downtown) and Monday, June 11 (Oakhurst).

Dates are subject to change based on weather and related circumstances. Installation of both stations should take about one week.

Once installed, each station will be able to serve two parking spaces. For the first year of operation, there will be no charge for the electricity at these stations. However, vehicles will still be subject to the existing two-hour parking limit and regular downtown parking fees for the North McDonough station.

How to manage

Minor impacts to on-street parking are expected at both locations during construction, though vehicle circulation should remain unaffected.

Tornado Siren Test Tomorrow

The June test of the Tornado Outdoor Warning Siren System will happen tomorrow (6/6/18) at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 7 June 2018.

Neighborhood Clean-Up: Saturday, June 9

Reminder: the City of Decatur is hosting Neighborhood Clean-up Days on Saturdays in March-June, to allow residents to dispose of bulky materials that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw bags. Every street in the City has been assigned to one Saturday. Visit the Neighborhood Cleanup Days page on the city website for detailed instructions and specified dates for each street.

Collection for June 9 will take place in the following neighborhood:

Commerce Drive (RR Underpass to S. Columbia)

Open Office Hour with Mayor Pro Tem Tony Powers

Decatur will host its second Open Office Hour of the year with Mayor pro tem Tony Powers on Wednesday, May 23 from 7 – 8 p.m. Mayor pro tem Powers will speak for approximately 15-20 minutes on the topic of myths and facts of development in the City.
