Decatur Residents –
The City expects that we will experience some impacts from Hurricane Michael.
According to the National Weather Service, tonight we expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Chance of precipitation is 100% with new rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches. Winds will be 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph.
• We advise caution parking under and being around large older trees with root issues or hollows in the trunk.
• There is also a risk of falling branches. The City of Decatur has been diligent in removing the trees and damaged branches that have been identified as a high risk of failure to reduce the impact from such storms. Unfortunately, there is no way to reduce all risk associated with tree failure during a wind event.

The recruitment and selection process for Decatur’s next City Manager has yielded 100 applicants from 21 states and the District of Columbia. More than 40 of the 100 candidates are from the state of Georgia. The City’s consultant, Heidi Voorhees, from GovHRUSA is in the process of reviewing the credentials of the candidates and will meet with the City Commission once her report is completed. “At the start of this process we estimated that 40-50 candidates would apply based upon other recruitments our firm has conducted for similar positions. This extraordinary response to the recruitment is a reflection of the City’s progressive approach to governance, its political stability and the overall high quality of life the City has to offer.”
Decatur’s City Manager, Peggy Merriss, is retiring at the end of the year after serving the City for 35 years, 25 as its City Manager. The City has had only two City Managers in the last 45 years.

The Decatur Makers are currently accepting applications for a Makerspace Manager.
The Makerspace Manager will work part-time (15 hours per week) to assist with all aspects of managing the makerspace and the organization. They will help with member management, coordinating classes and other uses of the space, communication and outreach, volunteer and event coordination, and facilities management. The expectation is that they will work closely with the executive director to help the larger community get more value from the space. The Makerspace Manager will need to potentially give tours and respond to inquiries about the space. In particular, the job will require some availability after school hours, weekday evenings, and weekends. This position includes a basic individual membership to Decatur Makers.

The City of Decatur invites the community to contribute to a conversation on inclusive and affordable housing, Saturday, November 10 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Manuel J. Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive, Decatur.
The day-long Summit will establish a shared understanding of Decatur’s housing context, define the often subjective term affordability as it relates to Decatur, explore viable approaches and strategies, and conclude with ways for all participants to be a part of local solutions.
The Summit includes a combination of speakers; round-table, small group community conversations; and interactive components inviting consideration, collaboration, and collective action moving forward.
Everyone within the community is invited including residents, business owners, employees, and others who simply want to contribute to this fundamental issue. The Summit is free and includes lunch but participants must register to attend so there is an accurate head-count for planning purposes. The October test of the Tornado Outdoor Warning Siren System will happen tomorrow (10/3/18) at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 4 October 2018.
