What Makes Our Zip So Hip?

Linda and I spent last Friday showing off Decatur to Better Mornings Atlanta reporter Corinna Allen.  She will be hosting this week’s show live at Parker’s on Ponce on Thursday morning, 5-7 a.m. 

First stop of the day was visiting the baby chicks at the Oakhurst Community Garden.

The mayor talked with Corinna for a few minutes in front of the Old Courthouse.

We were able to take the crew to a couple of the shops and restaurants around town. Thank you to everyone who was willing to be filmed and for answering Corinna’s question: What makes your zip so hip?

We’re excited that Decatur is the first city to be featured in Better Mornings Atlanta’s new Zip Trips series.  Everyone is invited to come hang out with us and the Better Mornings Atlanta crew this Thursday at 5 a.m. (yes, in the morning!) at Parker’s  and help show off our great community. We’re hoping to get a huge crowd out in front of Parker’s so set your alarm clocks for Thursday morning and we’ll see you there!

Time for the Spring Concerts!

Concerts on the Square and the Blue Sky Concert series will be starting in less than two weeks!  DBA Concert co-chairs Wendy Watkins and Jeremy Warner have arranged a great line-up, as you can see above. All of the Blue Sky Concerts begin at noon, and the Saturday night Concerts begin at 7 pm and last until 9:30pm (with the exception of the May 2nd concert, as seen below).

 On May 2nd, the Concert will be part of the Decatur Green Fest, which will begin at 3pm. Music for the Green Fest includes Jeff Hicks and the Heretics, The Virginia Dare Devlis, Bolder Monkey, and Trey Rosenkampf as well as the headliner, Y-O-U which begins at 8 pm.

The last Blue Sky Concert on May 27 features a children’s singer/songwriter, Douglas Brake.

Thanks to the Decatur Business Association and all of the sponsors for these great community events.

Happy Georgia Cities Week!

Created by the Georgia Municipal Association in 2000, Georgia Cities Week gives cities throughout the state an opportunity to share with their citizens information about the valuable services cities provide to residents. This year Georgia Cities Week is from Sunday, April 19 to Saturday, April 25 and the theme is “A Story to Tell.”

Each city designs its own programs to highlight city services and activities. Decatur’s annual Kids Activity Book is published in the April Focus every year to celebrate the week. Although the book is designed primarily for elementary children, it covers a lot of information about the city that adults can enjoy too.

Outcasts United

ft_stjohn Many of you might remember the article that came out in the New York Times magazine a couple of years ago about the The Fugees, the youth soccer team  from Clarkston comprised exclusively of refugee children. New York Times reporter, and author of Outcasts United, Warren St. John lived at the Decatur Holiday Inn while writing the story. And  The Fugees coach, Luma Mufleh, is a Decaturite who use to own the ice cream shop in the current Feast location.

For those you who aren’t familiar with The Fugees story, visit the Outcasts United site, or better yet, head over to the Carter Library on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. for the book signing with Warren St. John and Coach Luma.

Tickets to the event are $10 or free with a purchase of the book with A Cappella Books. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales and book sales with benefit the Fugees Family.

Agnes Scott Opens Renovated Alumnae House

Anna I. Young would be proud. The ASC 1910 graduate/mathematics professor for whom the Alumnae House is named now has a beautifully renovated and LEED Silver sustainable home.  Although Anna Young never lived in the house that is named for her, she was a charter member of the alumnae association and served as first vice president of the group.  When she died in 1920, the Agnes Scott Alumnae Association and Board of Trustees gave the house to the college in her memory.

It is fitting that the rededication and celebration was held today during ASC’s Alumnae Weekend.  President Elizabeth Kiss said that this is the college’s first project designed for LEED Silver certification and called out both Columbia Seminary and the City of Decatur for their soon-to-be open LEED Silver residence hall and fire station.

Check out Commissioner Fred Boykin (whose mother is an ASC alum) standing in front of Colonel George Washington Scott’s original bed that is now in one of the bedrooms and Commissioner Kecia Cunningham (who is also an ASC alum and currently on the Alumnae Board) standing in the garden.

My favorite is the alumnae art on all the walls – oh, and the AIY monogrammed towels in every bathroom.

Decatur’s own Terra McVoy (manager of Little Shop of Stories) has written a book that was not only published by Simon and Schuster, but also given a two page spread in their spring catalog. That’s a huge deal in the book industry, so come out to Little Shop tonight and help celebrate! 

Festivities begin at 7:30 p.m. There will be cupcakes from Button Cakes Bakery, champagne, and live music by Daniel Clay.

California Flag Flies on Old Courthouse!

The Lifetime TV show, “Drop Dead Diva” is currently filming their first episode at the Old Courthouse on the Square in downtown Decatur. The crew first visited Decatur last September and filmed the pilot. The creators were happy to have the show picked up by Lifetime, and are filming episode one this week, and plan to return the end of the month to film part of episode two.

According to www.variety.com the show “revolves around a vapid wannabe model who suddenly dies and finds her soul entering the body of a brilliant, overweight, attorney”. The role is played by Broadway star, Brooke Elliot. As you can tell from the state flag flying above the Old Courthouse, the show is set in California.

Filming will continue on Friday, with some early morning scenes being shot outside on the Square. The Location Manager, Mitch Harbison,  is excited to be shooting in Decatur. On a recent walk around the Square with Mitch and his assistant James, they both gushed about Decatur. Their biggest compliment: “The people here are so nice and so friendly”. They plan on doing future filming in our wonderful little city.

Greening of the Greenspaces

Enjoy the beautiful weather forecasted for later this week by visiting Decatur Greenspaces. Thanks to a grant from the BBQ & Blues Festival, the Oakhurst Community Garden is sponsoring the “Greening of the Greenspaces”, an Earth Day art exhibit to celebrate the diverse parks and gardens in the city. Dancers have created site-specific performances and visionary artists have designed sculptures with natural materials that will biodegrade with time. The sculptures will be available for viewing at the sites below from April 18 through May 31.

Recreation Center Master Plan Meeting Tonight

The Recreation Center Master Plan design consultants will present their recommendations tonight at a meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore Street.

Their recommendations are based on the information received from public input at previous meetings and from survey responses.

The community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Share Some Love With Your Planet!

Decatur’s annual Earth Day Festival will be held this Saturday, April 18 from 10 am until 2 pm in Harmony Park. This year’s event features educational activities, crafts and earth-friendly activities, as well as music by the Morgan Rowe Band beginning at 11 am.

Join in the Ginat Puppet Parade beginning at 12:30 pm featuring the Seed and Feed Marching Abominables.

On Sunday, April 19, fun activities continue in Oakhurst Garden from 1 until 4 pm. There will be crafts, goats to feed and pet, a cake contest, live music and more. Plants and t-shirts will also be available for purchase. For more information visit www.oakhurstgarden.org.

Both events are free and open to the public. I hope to see everyone there!
