Changes for Permitting in the City of Decatur

Starting January 21, 2014, permitting services will take place in a new location at the renovated Public Works Facility, 2635 Talley Street.

The move takes place at the same time as the formation of a new one-stop shop for permitting that will make it easier for residents and applicants to access these services.  This one-stop shop is part of a larger reorganization and the creation of the new Design, Environment & Construction Division of Public Works.  The new Division will be home to permitting, inspections, engineering, streets, the storm water utility, and codes enforcement.

Limited Permitting Next Week:  What you need to know

Between Jan. 13 – Jan. 17 the City of Decatur will provide limited permitting services during the move from City Hall to the Talley Street Public Works Facility.  During this time, roofing, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fencing permits will be issued. Staff will be available largely by appointment only. Inspection requests will continue as usual. For more information, call 404.370.4014 or email  John.Maximuk@decaturga.com.pwsign2

Here’s a little something to get you in the holiday spirit: a video of Decatur kids singing “Jingle Bells” during their visit to the Decatur Police this week.

The children and their parents carol and deliver treats to the police department and fire stations every December to thank police officers and firefighters for their service to Decatur. Kavarna provided hot chocolate to the carolers and Atlantic Limo donated a bus to transport them around town. Mom Kristin Ebersold said, “We’re so lucky to have such competent & welcoming fire and police departments and generous local business owners.”

Bandstand in SnowAs we near the start of winter, and with winter weather already affecting millions across the country, here are a few important reminders to stay safe:

  • Gas stations and ATMs may not work while the power is out. Fill your vehicle’s tank and get cash out so you have what you need.
  • Use flashlights for emergency lighting. NEVER use candles due to increased risk of fire.
  • If using a generator during a power outage, always run it outside and away from windows to avoid carbon monoxide.
  • Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions.

Last year we launched the first in a series of City of Decatur ornaments created by local artists.  This year our featured artist is Jamie Calkin.  He created three different scenes – the Old Courthouse surrounded by a wreath, the Community Bandstand decorated with garlands, and the tree high atop Little Shop of Stories, lighted by Santa.  Each ornament is numbered and signed by Jamie.

Ornaments are regularly $18 but we are offering a Terrific Thursday special this week – you can purchase them individually for $15 or all three for $42.  While you’re out at Terrific Thursdays, look for Santa shopping as well!  You can purchase the ornaments at Wild Oats and Billy Goats, Vivid, and Little Shop of Stories.

In addition to our special one-of-a-kind Decatur ornaments, James Dean created a special Pete the Cat “PEACE” in the City of DeCATur print and holiday cards.  Prints are $35 and packages of 5 cards are $20 (you can also purchase individual cards for $5).  We love our Pete the Cat and we are so glad he is celebrating with us in this special way.  You can purchase Pete the Cat items at Wild Oats and Billy Goats.

All proceeds from the sale of these items goes back into creating the 2015 Decatur ornament.

streetlight-swags

Left: This is what we thought the swags would look like. Right: The underwhelming reality.

OK, we agree, the new holiday decorations don’t measure up to our standards.  Rather than looking like swags, they look like upside down trees and they just don’t work on the street lamps.  Many of our holiday wreaths date back to 1996 and were starting to look shabby.  We thought it would be a good idea to trade them out for something different and replace the oldest wreaths with an updated design.  Boy were we wrong!  So, when you mess up, admit it,  take responsibility and fix it.  The good news is that our old wreaths are still in storage.  Our decorating company will begin switching them out but it may take a week as they fit us into their installation schedule.  The “experiments”  will be traded in for new wreaths next season and we will put this down as a lesson learned.  In the meantime, just tell your friends that they are festive arrows pointing you in the direction of great shopping and wonderful food and have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

November hosts a number of health awareness campaigns, including: National Epilepsy Awareness Month, National Diabetes Month and National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. At the same time, it’s National Family Caregivers Month, and each year more and more Americans are caring for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities or health issues related to old age. With this in mind, the city is encouraging family caregivers to take advantage of Smart911, a service that brings a new level of support and peace-of-mind to those with such conditions and the family members who provide assistance.

Smart911 allows individuals and family caregivers to create a free, private and secure Safety Profile at www.smart911.com, which can include any information they want 9-1-1 to have in the event of an emergency. The profile is then delivered automatically to the 9-1-1call-taker when an emergency call is made. Details in a Safety Profile allow 9-1-1 to have a better understanding of a situation and can be passed on to emergency response teams in the field to help support fast, precise action.

A Safety Profile can include such things as medical notes that enable emergency responders to approach and treat a person with Alzheimer’s, epilepsy or diabetes properly and quickly; a particularly useful feature if the person cannot communicate, is suffering a seizure or is confused. Information can also include family caregiver emergency contact details. Should someone with Alzheimer’s dial 9-1-1 and be unable to recall personal details, the Safety Profile can provide a name and exact address. If they wander away from home and a family caregiver dials 9-1-1 from a phone number included in the profile, a photo can be immediately distributed to emergency responders to expedite a search.

For more information about Smart911 and how we’re using it in the City of Decatur, contact Fire Chief Toni Washington at toni.washington@decaturga.com or 404.373.5092.
