Last Concert on the Square This Saturday
Posted in Events on May 30, 2014 | Leave a Comment »
. . . at least it’s the last Concert on the Square for the season. If you miss this one, you’ll have to wait until the first Saturday in September for the next concert. And you definitely don’t want to miss tomorrow night’s concert because it’s going to be a good one. SHEL is playing – that’s the band in the photo below.
Here’s what they’re about:
Hailing from Fort Collins, Colorado, sisters Sarah, Hannah, Eva, and Liza were raised in an atmosphere of creative freedom and diligent study. They have honed their musical skills and blended their personalities and visions into a unified whole. From their fetching, unpredictable songs to their whimsical, hand-made top hats, SHEL makes a profound impression. Their growing audiences and critical acclaim point to a full and fruitful career ahead.
And here’s what the concerts committee says about them:
SHEL made a big impression recently at Eddie’s Attic and we are sure you will be blown away by the creativity, originality, and stage persona of each of these talented sisters. We predict that their success will only grow, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to see them here in Decatur.
Are you convinced? Good! Pack a picnic and come up to the bandstand around 7-ish (come early for a better spot) and settle down for a fun evening on the square.
PS: There’s a chance of rain. If the concert is cancelled, we’ll announce it on Twitter @downtownDecatur.

Did you know that hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and ends November 30th? Or that the Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th and also ends November 30th?
Lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 25th – May 31st. In honor of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, we ask that all residents take time to build an emergency kit, make a family communication plan and create a Smart911 Safety Profile at www.smart911.com no matter if you have a place near the ocean’s shore or not. Take these steps now to reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.

Born in Memphis and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Frank Barham learned to play the harmonica heavily influenced by bluesmen Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and James Cotton. A love of jazz and R&B led to Frank’s eventual pursuit of the chromatic harmonica. His song list includes tunes by Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock; bossas by Antonio Carolos Jobim and Luis Bonfi; blues by Ben Tucker and John Coltrane. Mix the fluidity of Toots Thielemans, the funk of Stevie Wonder and the rawness of Howlin’ Wolf and you’ll have the key elements in the unique sound of Frank Barham.
Join us to hear Frank today at noon on the Community Bandstand!

Georgia Power customers can take advantage of the company’s Home Energy Improvement Program. Participating Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified contractors assess how a home’s energy-related components and systems can work together more effectively to create a comfortable and energy efficient home.
Following a thorough home energy assessment, a complete prioritized list of recommended home energy improvements is provided. Once the recommended improvements are successfully completed by a program participating contractor, a follow-up assessment is performed to determine the resulting energy performance. Depending on what energy improvements are recommended and made, homeowners could enjoy up to a 30% electricity reduction and qualify for up to $2,200 in rebates from Georgia Power’s Home Energy Improvement Program. To learn more about the program or to locate a participating BPI contractor, call 1-877-310-5607 or visit georgiapower.com/homeimprovements.
