Every other year for the past 8 years, the City of Decatur has surveyed its residents through the National Research Center (NRC.) The NRC sent out the 2014 survey to a random sample of Decatur residents on Wednesday, February 5th with a postcard notification. If you didn’t receive a postcard that means you weren’t one of the random households chosen this time.

The actual survey will be sent out twice on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19 to the random sample. If you are one of the lucky ones to receive the survey, please make sure to fill it out and send it back via mail or online. We’ve had a 40% response rate for the past 4 surveys, which is great, but we want more! The survey is completely anonymous and we only get the final tabulations from NRC.

If you’d like a better idea of what the final tabulations look like, click here for our webpage where you can download the 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 survey results. The data from the survey is used by the City in its budgeting, strategic and annual planning processes.

If you have any questions regarding the survey, contact Budget & Performance Measurement Manager Meredith Roark at meredith.roark@decaturga.com or call 404-370-4102.

Meet me at the Old House Fair

The 2014 Decatur Old House Fair in Decatur, GeorgiaWe do a lot of really cool events in Decatur-beer, books, art, wine-you get the picture. But every winter we do one really, really cool event that that you might not know about. Its the Decatur Old House Fair-a one day event dedicated to new ideas, materials and techniques for rehabilitating, furnishing and maintaining your older home. If you live anywhere in or around Decatur, the chances are good to live in an old home and therefore have done work to an old home. Personally, I am living one of those very projects right now- finally putting hardwood floors in our kitchen, which was previously covered by the ugliest, dirtiest vinyl of ALL time.

See, I told you we are living in Old House heaven

Goodbye vinyl, hello hardwoods!

So you can bet that my husband and I will be at the Old House Fair tomorrow, soaking up any knowledge anyone will give us. We hope to see you there!  Click here for more information and to buy tickets

trees squareIn October 2013, the City Commission passed a 90-day moratorium on tree removal, and directed staff to develop an updated tree ordinance that would reflect current best management practices in the industry.  The final recommendations were presented on January 21st.  Based on concerns voiced by the community, the City Commission requested that the ordinance be revised and brought back for consideration in March.

On February 3rd, the Commission modified their request to include a work session on March 3rd. The format of the session will be designed to provide the Commission with an opportunity to articulate and discuss their specific concerns and the concerns expressed by the community.  Once a clear policy direction has been established, a schedule for ordinance revisions and community input will be developed.

The work session will be open to the community, but there will not be an opportunity for attendees to comment. Amendments to the tree ordinance will not be considered until after March 3, 2014.

Below are the updated materials on this issue.  Public comments are still being accepted on the DecaturNEXT website.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Amanda Thompson, amanda.thompson@decaturga.com, 404-370-4102.

If you are driving around town today, you may notice film crews out and about. Locations include Trinity Street near Fire Station #1, Thumbs Up Diner on Ponce, and at Decatur First Baptist Church. There will be law enforcement present with all crews to ensure public safety and to help with traffic flow. If you are driving through downtown today, you may experience very temporary delays in front of Thumbs Up. Please either make plans to take an alternate route, or just be patient for a few moments while scenes film.

storm water

Weather permitting, Reeves Contracting plans to start installing the new storm sewer on Church Street north of East Maple early this week.  The new storm sewer will extend from East Maple north on Church Street towards East Trinity Place.

Businesses on Church Street between East Trinity Place and East Maple Street should notify patrons that once work begins this week, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction, so they will have to approach this area from East Trinity Place.

Due to the location of the new storm line, on-street parking on Church Street will be prohibited in the area of construction. A schematic plan illustrating temporary traffic changes can be downloaded here.

The photo shows Reeves’ construction team installing the new storm line across East Howard Avenue earlier last week.  This line intercepts an old granite rubble and terra cotta storm sewer that crosses the CSX railroad and heads cross country under several properties on the east side of Church Street.
