Buy Advance Beach Party Tickets Before Noon on Friday

The Decatur Beach Party will be held Friday, June 18th from 5 pm until midnight. Advance tickets are just $6.50, but you have to buy them by noon tomorrow. Tickets will be available at the gate for $10. Children 12 and under are free – limit two per each adult with a ticket. The Reputations will play at the Bandstand Stage beginning at 5 pm, and Terry Lee & the GTs will play from 8 pm until midnight.

No outside food or beverages will be allowed in the festival area. We have a great food court and many beverage choices for your enjoyment.

Decatur Arts Festival "Last Call"

Be sure to stop by the “Last Call” for the Decatur Arts Festival Fine Arts Exhibition on Sunday, June 6  from 4 until 6 pm. The “Last Call” is your last chance to view this great exhibit as well as hear from some of the artists that created the works. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced and you will have the opportunity to share some refreshments as well as enjoy some music. Decatur Cemetery Spring Photo Contest

Whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, we invite you to participate in our Decatur Cemetery Master Plan Implementation photo contest, celebrating the largest green space in Decatur.

There will be two prizes awarded, one for amateurs and the other for professionals. The winning photos will be displayed on the Decatur website and will be displayed in the new Decatur Cemetery Office. Both amateur and professional photographers are welcome to participate.

To enter, take current photos of the Decatur Cemetery. Entries must be submitted by the original photographer. Photos may be 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 color or black and white prints. You may submit up to five prints. All entries will become the property of the City of Decatur and will not be returned. All photos must be received by May 31, 2010.

Photos will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and effectiveness in conveying the green space or the unique character of the cemetery. Subject can be people enjoying walking pets in the cemetery, landscapes, etc. Judges will select winning photos from both the amateur and professional categories.

Start Your Weekend Early

Parker’s On Ponce is holding a James Stewart Winemaker’s Dinner tonight at 7 pm. James Stewart was featured on the cover of the March 2010 Entrepreneur Magazine. Several Dancer’s CORE is celebrating their 30 Year Anniversary tonight  from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at the studio. The festivities will include mingling with the dancers, light refreshments and a champagne toast! For more information or to make a donation, click here.

Little Shop of Stories invites you to Shrek Storytime tonight at 7 pm. The final movie installment in the Shrek saga will be released soon, and to get ready for the new movie they’re having a special storytime featuring William Steig’s classic book, Shrek. You can also draw your favorite characters and read other gross monster stories.

 

Rhythm Ranch

The Decatur Library invites you to hear Rhythm Ranch (formerly Cowboy Envy) tonight at 7 pm in the auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Rhythm Ranch  is a new group anchored by two members of the beloved all female western band, Cowboy Envy, Berné Poliakoff (aka Frenchy) and Kathleen Hatfield (aka Buffalo K). Their work has garnered much praise and multiple awards, including the “Best Harmony” award from the Western Music Association (twice). Their vocals have been described as “heavenly…with harmonies to die for” (Atlanta Journal Constitution). Together, Frenchy and Buffalo K have performed at festivals and concerts from Alaska to South Carolina. With Rhythm Ranch, the ladies have joined up with an amazing fiddler (Al Pieper) and an extraordinary bassist (L.A. Tuten). Together they deliver dynamic performances, filled with wonderful music and great humor, delighting audiences of all ages. The event is free to the community.

Decatur Arts Festival Poster Features Pete the Cat

The 22nd Annual Decatur Arts Festival unveiled this year’s festival poster at a wonderful and fun Poster Unveiling last Thursday at the Old Courthouse on the Square. The poster was designed by James Dean and features the ubiquitous Pete the Cat. Many “oooohs” and “aaahs” were heard as the drape was lifted. Posters and t-shirts featuring the design will be available at the Information Tents at the festival.

The Decatur Arts Festival will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, May 29 and 30, on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur. The festival will kick off with the ArtWalk on Friday, May 28th at dozens of businesses in Decatur. Events will also be held throughout the month including  the Fine Arts Exhibition Opening Reception on May25th at Agnes Scott College, a performance by the Decatur Civic Chorus on May 16 and Literary Arts events throughout the week of May 25th.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in Decatur! Many of our merchants and restaurants are offering specials, so no reason to leave Decatur…..

Congratulations to Officer Deborah Strawn who was presented with the Thomas O. Davis Award at last night’s Decatur Business Association meeting!

Decatur’s Thomas O. Davis Award honors a public employee who has helped strengthen the bond between government and the community, served as a role model for others in public service, contributed to the well-being of the community, inspired others to get involved in public service, and served the public with respect. The award is named for Decatur’s long-time city attorney.

Officer Strawn, who has worked with the City of Decatur Police Department for 25 years, was honored for her service and commitment to her job and the community. Strawn supervises the School Crossing Guards, is in charge of the Evidence Room, and works most of our special events. It is a pleasure to work with someone as dedicated as Deborah Strawn.

Planting a Tree for Earth Day

Gary Garrett, who is on the Decatur Sustainability Board, and his wife Commissioner Patti Garrett celebrated Earth Day by planting a tree in their yard. After purchasing the tree at a silent auction, they thought the biggest challange was going to be digging the huge hole until they were asked how they were getting it home. Luckily, delivery of the tree was an option.

New Faces In The Police Department

The City of Decatur Police Department has some new faces; we have two new Police Officers and a new Communications Officer.

Officer John Bender

Officer John Bender comes to Decatur after working for DeKalb County Parks and Recreation where he was a center director. Responsibilities included organizing and running activities for members of the community ranging in ages from 3 years to Senior Citizens.  He attended Tucker High School and then went on to North Georgia College and Georgia Perimeter College. Officer Bender dreamed of working in law enforcement when he was a child. He feels that everyone can make a difference and the best way for him to make one was by helping others in need.

Officer Matthew Damico

Officer Matthew Damico is a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans where he earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology. After working in the mental health field and private security industry, Officer Damico fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a Police Officer. Officer Damico is a proud husband and father of an energetic little boy with a second child due in the fall. He is excited and proud to serve the Decatur community.

Lynette Hardmon

 Lynette Hardmon is a Decatur native whose parents attended Decatur High School and both grandmothers still reside in Decatur. Lynette has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and is currently working on her Masters of Science in the same field. After a summer internship with the Fort Valley Police Department, she experienced various aspects of policing including routine patrol, investigations, court and social work but found communications to be the best match. Officer Hardmon joined the City of Decatur Police Department as a Communications Officer about eight months ago and looks forward to coming to work each day.

Bill and Amy, owners of  The Seen Gallery,  invite the community to enjoy the new work of artists Melanie Eberhardt and Madli Kirchholff at an Opening Reception this Saturday, April 17 from 7 until 10 pm. 

The Seen Gallery is currently doing some remodeling of the gallery and removing a wall to open up the space. Plan on attending this Opening Reception to check on their progress. If you cannot make it this weekend, be sure to stop by anytime and browse the great artwork they have on display (and for sale).

The Seen Gallery is located on Church Street in downtown Decatur.
