Drug ID & Current Trends presentation

The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a “Drug Identification & Current Trends” presentation on Wednesday, March 12 from 6:30 p.m  – 8:00 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center. The presentation will include information on current trends, street names, paraphernalia and what parents can look for, as well as an overview of what officers are seeing in Decatur. The presentation is FREE and designed for parents, caregivers and anyone who works with kids and teens who want to become more aware. Attendees must be at least 18-years-old. Please contact Sgt. All City of Decatur offices closed Thurs. Feb. 13

All city of Decatur offices, including City Hall and the Design, Environment and Construction (DEC) division of Public Works, are closed tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 13).

Municipal Court hearings for tomorrow evening are cancelled. Call 678-553-6655 to reschedule once offices re-open.

The Decatur Recreation Center is closed tomorrow and all Thursday activities are cancelled. The Center plans to be open regular hours on Friday.

Trash and recycling pick up for Thursday is cancelled. If tomorrow is your regular trash day your trash will be picked up on Friday, Feb. 14 instead.

Midway Rd. at S. Candler was closed this afternoon because of concerns that a leaning tree might fall. That is the only road closure in the city at this time. The latest DeKalb County road closures are available here.

Overall, things have been quiet in the city of Decatur during this winter weather. There have been no wrecks, no injuries, and no power outages. Public safety personnel and volunteers continue to check on seniors and other vulnerable members of the community.

Temperatures are dropping and more snow is on its way this evening (up to 3” is possible). This will continue to make travel difficult and dangerous. Please stay safe indoors. If you do leave the house, be aware that roads and sidewalks are slippery and frozen. If you or your children choose to sled, please avoid sledding into any roadways.

All power outages or objects that have fallen on power lines MUST be reported to Georgia Power. The city cannot touch or repair power lines.

Finally, continue to charge medical devices, cell phones and other electronics in anticipation of possible power outages. If there is a loss of power, the city may use the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to communicate with the community. Slushy & Quiet in Decatur

Thank you to everyone in the community for staying off the roads last night and today. It continues to be fairly quiet in the city, and most city offices are closed. Winter storm and ice storm warnings are still in place across Georgia today through Thursday morning, and more precipitation is expected to fall tonight.

Remember, if the power goes out or you see a tree or other object fall on power lines, contact Georgia Power at 1-888-891-0938. Continue to charge medical devices, phones and other electronics so you are ready in case there is a power outage.

Staff members from the City’s Public Works department are out clearing city sidewalks of slush, and the tractor (pictured above) is busy clearing streets. Please do your part by clearing the sidewalk in front of your home or business.

As always, call the police non-emergency number (404-373-6551) if you require assistance or 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

Freezing tonight, power outages possible

Conditions as of this posting remain above freezing in the City of Decatur, but the temperature is expected to drop late tonight. There is a serious threat of accumulation of ice on trees and power lines tonight and tomorrow, and this combined with expected heavy winds could result in power outages.

As a precaution, please go ahead and fully charge cell phones and medical devices now. If the power does go out, contact Georgia Power at 1-888-891-0938 to report the outage. Georgia Power has crews pre-staged in the area to respond to any losses of power. Please only call 911 in the event of a life-threatening emergency, not simply to report a power outage. You may also call the Decatur Police non-emergency number if you require public safety assistance: 404-373-6551.

Wed. closings & updates

So far it is just raining in Decatur, but the temperature is expected to drop this evening, which will mean freezing.

Tonight’s Municipal Court hearings have been cancelled. Please call 678-553-6655 to reschedule your hearing for a future date.

A tree is down this morning at Lamont & Vidal, and Georgia Power is on the scene. Power is expected to be restored to the area by 10:30 a.m.

Sgt. Ross with the Decatur Police Department issued the following alert last night:

Decatur Police are investigating reports of seven vehicles entered overnight on the Garland Avenue, McClean Street and Brower Street.  On 2-10-14 at approximately 7:00 am, a resident on a morning walk located a wallet in the roadway and observed several car doors ajar and called police.  Officers canvassed the neighborhood and located seven vehicles that appeared to have been entered.  All but one of the vehicles were parked in driveways.  All of the vehicles were unsecured.  A GPS unit and the recovered wallet were the only things stolen.

It is not uncommon for there to be a rash of entered vehicles during inclement weather, which we are currently preparing for in Decatur.  Please remove all valuables from your vehicles.  Please look out and check on vehicles in the area if you hear something in the middle of the night.  Call police immediately if you see anyone going from vehicle to vehicle.

UPDATED: Tuesday weather update

With more winter weather headed Decatur’s way, city officials continue to monitor the situation. As of this posting, tomorrow’s Municipal Court hearings will be held. and all after school programs will be open. Children and Youth Services is working closely with City Schools of Decatur and an update will be posted here on the Decatur Minute should anything change.

UPDATE:  City Schools of Decatur are now closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 11, so all after school programs are cancelled.

Trash & recycling pick up is expected to occur tomorrow as regularly scheduled.

Tomorrow morning’s Red Hatters Valentine’s event at the Decatur Recreation Center is cancelled, as are Tuesday’s evening programs. All Wednesday Recreation Center activities are cancelled.

There is the potential for power outages over the next few days, especially if precipitation freezes Tuesday night. If you have emergency equipment or electronics that need to be charged, please charge them now so you are prepared in case the power does go out.

Please remember to check on your neighbors, and call the police non-emergency line if you or they require assistance: 404-373-6551.

One final reminder: If you have ice melt/de-icer, please go ahead and pre-treat sidewalks in front of your home or business and help keep them clear as the weather worsens. Be careful driving at the corner of Commerce and N. Candler. There is ice at this intersection and if you can avoid it please do. In fact, if you can avoid driving in general that would be the best thing, especially as temperatures drop and more freezing occurs.

Check On Seniors In Your Neighborhood

This is not a warning to the community that it is cold outside, we are all quite aware. This is a request for everyone to pitch in as a community and offer something that is free, a few minutes of your time. Many of us prep for cold weather by stocking the kitchen, picking up a space heater, throwing more blankets on the bed and tending to our plants and animals. However, it is not easy for every member of our community to prepare for or endure extremely cold weather. Please take a few minutes to check on the seniors in your neighborhood. See if you can bring in their mail or wood or something else they may need. Sometimes simply being checked on is greatly appreciated when staying indoors gets to be lonely. Lastly, a neighbor may need emergency assistance and unable to call for themselves. If you are caring for an elder loved one or simply watching out for seniors in your neighborhood, click here for some specific tips to help.

Here’s a round-up of today’s closings in the City of Decatur:

  • The Decatur library is closing today at 2 p.m.
  • The Decatur Recreation Center is closing at 5 p.m. Youth basketball and all afternoon and evening classes are cancelled. All Recreation Center classes and activities before noon tomorrow are cancelled.
  • Decatur Municipal Court is closed tonight. Please call 678-553-6655 to reschedule your hearing for a future date.
  • All City Schools of Decatur after-school programs and after-school activities have been canceled for this afternoon. All evening activities, athletics practices and games, classes, and meetings scheduled in the City Schools of Decatur are also canceled.

The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a “Self-Protection Workshop” on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center (231 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030). Teens ages 13-17 are welcome to attend this workshop with a parent/guardian.

This workshop is designed to teach you how to be proactive, maintain awareness and be decisive during a violent confrontation. In the workshop, the presenter will cover:

  • Behavioral Profiling – Situational Awareness – Personal Security vs. Self-Defense
  • Mindset – Conditions of Readiness – Warning & Danger Signs of an Attack
  • Simple & Effective Self-Defense Techniques – Improvised weapons

The presenter of the workshop, Steven Mosley, has over two decades of law enforcement work experience and currently works locally for the Department of Homeland Security.  Steven is also the Director of Training for the Combat Hard Training Center in Jonesboro.

VIDEO: Carolers thank police & fire

Here’s a little something to get you in the holiday spirit: a video of Decatur kids singing “Jingle Bells” during their visit to the Decatur Police this week.

The children and their parents carol and deliver treats to the police department and fire stations every December to thank police officers and firefighters for their service to Decatur. Kavarna provided hot chocolate to the carolers and Atlantic Limo donated a bus to transport them around town. Mom Kristin Ebersold said, “We’re so lucky to have such competent & welcoming fire and police departments and generous local business owners.”
