Decatur Makers smashed their Kickstarter fundraising goal of $15K!
This will fund the final construction to officially open their makerspace across the street from the Post Office in downtown Decatur. BUT no rest for the mad-hatted makers. With the final hours ticking onward, the campaign ends Oct 30 at midnight, they’re shooting for another $10,000. They’d like to create a large door opening that’ll allow bigger projects & equipment to come in and out of the space AND they’d like to install a computer server rack to equip their members with some awesome technology. Volunteers needed for Maker Faire Atlanta

Maker Faire Atlanta is just around the corner on Oct 4 & 5 in the heart of downtown Decatur and Decatur Makers is busy making projects to showcase. They will have three booths PLUS something called a Human-sized Foosball table (!!) PLUS they are rebuilding the 3-D puzzle of the mine-crafted City of Decatur logo from the Arts Fest.

The Decatur Makers share the following invitation to the entire community:
Decatur residents are invited to explore the future home of Decatur Makers this Wednesday, June 18 at 8 p.m. (in the old gym at First Christian Church of Decatur, across from the post office).
The all-ages “makerspace” is slated to open later this summer. Imagine a wood shop, metal shop, computer lab, electronics shop, arts and crafts and more all under one roof, with equipment and expertise to help explore and build interesting things.
Wednesday’s sneak preview / open house will feature maker demonstrations, a preview of renovation plans and more about memberships and other news.
A pre-event mingle will be held at Marlay House Pub starting at 6 p.m., with part of food and drink proceeds benefitting the not-for-profit Decatur Makers.
If you’ve ever wanted to get a look inside that old church gym – and see its makerspace future – RSVP for the event at www.DecaturMakers.org.
The event coincides with the June 18 “National Day of Making” (proclaimed by the White House).

The Decatur Makers, a community organized makerspace for adults and school-aged kids, are busy readying their new space in the First Christian Church of Decatur, 601 W Ponce de Leon Ave. On Saturday, March 22 Makers big and small participated in a clean up day. Volunteers carried out over a ton of garbage, which Decatur sanitation workers crushed with a garbage compactor and hauled away. (Check out this impressive video of a couch being crushed during the clean up.)
The Maker movement promotes creating, repairing, repurposing and otherwise making things from electronics to textiles, usually around shared equipment and community space.
